The Tokyo Imperial Palace is located at Chiyoda-ku in Tokyo, close to the Tokyo station. Post the Meiji Restoration era which signaled the end of the Edo Shogunate, Meiji was crowned the emperor and moved the capital of Japan from Kyoto, with Edo renamed Tokyo. The former Edo Castle was converted into the Emperor's residence. The official name of the Imperial Residence from 1888 to 1948 was Miyagi. During the Second World War, the Imperial Palace was bombed by the US Military and rebuilt according to its original appearance in 1968. Most of the corridors and rooms in the palace are not open to the public, with only the eastern wing open for visitors. The Imperial Palace interiors are opened twice a year - on the Emperor's birthday and the New Year. (Jan 2nd).
