The General Archives of the West Indies was built in the era of Philip II and became a public archive in 1781. It is a collection of larger and more important documents about the history of colonial America. The collections include precious manuscripts and materials about Columbus, manuscripts and documents of Magellan, Hernan Cortes, and others. Not only that, but all the archives about the Americas stored in several other Spanish cities were also transferred and stored here. The West Indian Archives has been selected as a World Heritage Site.
