Athens Travel Guide

Athens is a city that gets its name from the Greek goddess of wisdom - Athena. It is the birthplace of European civilization. Despite thousands of years of wear and tear from wind and snow, it still exudes a unique charm. When you go to Athens, you will have the opportunity to see great ancient temples and exciting marketplaces. The grandiose achievements of the centuries enshroud the city at every turn. Athens is surrounded on three sides by mountains. The last side faces the Aegean Sea. The city is built around the Acropolis. Even though the Acropolis has already endured 2,000 years of wind and rain, warfare and modernization, people are still shocked by the remaining, albeit damaged, temples. Take a stroll through historic Pláka and choose one of the many restaurants to indulge in some mouthwatering Greek cuisine.

While you stroll through Athens, you will meet modernity, combined with Greek culture and fun-loving people in a pulsating but at the same time relaxed society that characterizes this country. If you look a little higher, over the horizon, you will discover a place that was truly created for the gods - the Acropolis. Once there, you should leave the bustling city behind you for a few hours to immerse yourself in an exciting story. In my article I will tell you what to expect when you visit this fascinating building, the symbol of Athens. Acropolis - not only in Athens Did you know that the name Acropolis is just a generic term and that there are several of these buildings? If you shake your head now, it doesn't matter, because most of them only think of the Acropolis in Athens. Acropolis in the original sense means something like castle hill, which once served as a fortification. For strategic reasons, this facility - as can be seen almost everywhere in the world - was built on the city hills, after all, from there you have the best view. On enemies, not on the landscape. We enjoy that today. An acropolis is like a citadel, also a fortress on the heights of a city, whereby the acropolis has developed more and more into a cultural site over time. Today, however, everything revolves around the famous landmark of the Greek capital, because numerous tourists make pilgrimages to the hill that characterizes the cityscape. For this reason, I also set out to take a closer look at the Place of the Gods, which has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1986. #mynovgetaway #mynovgetaway

Hydra, one of the most cosmopolitan Greek islands, is located in the heart of the Argo Saronic Gulf. One of the main reasons why Hydra is a popular destination is its proximity to Athens, as a ferry from Athens to Hydra, will get you to the beautiful island in just 2 hours. It’s the perfect option for a quick getaway! Having been a filming location of “A girl in black” and “Boy on a dolphin” movies, as well as a holiday destination for Leonard Cohen, Hydra stands out for its classy beauty! On Hydra island, you won’t see any cars! Everyone uses their foot, boats or donkeys to get around the island. The cars ban, along with the elegant stone mansions of the island, create a charming atmosphere and make the island one of the most serene destinations near Athens. The island of Hydra is a popular small island of the Saronic Gulf, just a couple of hours ferry ride from Athens. It is famous for its picturesque architecture, the vivid nightlife, and cosmopolitan character. Except for relaxing at cozy beaches, there is not much sightseeing on Hydra island. In spring and autumn, hiking is a popular thing to do as the island is crossed by many walking paths that lead to impressive spots with sea view and historical monasteries. Hydra Town is also a picturesque place to stroll around, with elegant mansions and a museum at the port. #mynovgetaway #mynovgetaway
