Hanging Coffin, Wuyi Mountain

Wuyi hanging coffin, a wooden coffin shaped like a awning ship in the south of the Yangtze River, is a burial utensil of the ancient Yi people of Wuyishan, which was listed in the provincial cultural relics protection unit in October 1985, and is an important part of Wuyishan World Cultural Heritage.

Like celestial burials and water burials, hanging coffins are an ancient form of funeral. The burial sites are usually chosen on the cliffs of the water on the riverside. The coffins are placed in natural or artificial caves tens to hundreds of meters from the water, and some are placed directly on suspended wooden stakes. On the cliffs on both sides of Jiuqu Creek, Wuyi Mountain, there are still more than ten hanging coffins.
