Venus and Roman temples are considered the largest temples in ancient Rome. Mount Villian, located between the eastern edge of the Plaza de Rome and the Colosseum, was dedicated to Venus and eternal Rome. The architect was Emperor Hadrian. The temple was built in 121 A.D. and officially completed in 135 A.D. and was finally completed by Anthony Pius in 141 A.D. The temple was damaged by fire in 307 A.D. and later rebuilt and restored by Emperor Maxonitius. A severe earthquake in the early ninth century destroyed the temple. About 850 A.D., Pope Leo IV ordered the construction of a new church on the ruins of the temple. The church was rebuilt in 1612 and renamed St. Francesca Romana. Modern temples were renovated on a large scale in order to be open to the outside world. Overlooking Venus and Roman temples from the Colosseum viewing platform, the church bell tower stands behind the temple. There are eighteen white pillars in the South and north of the temple, all of which are 1.8 meters wide, making the temple very spectacular.
