Chencha and DorzeTypical hut of the Dorze people near ChenchaThe Dorze people are living around the villages of Chencha and Dorze. They are well known for their tall beehive like huts which can reach over 10 meters when build. Eaten by termites from the bottom they become smaller and smaller over the years. The Dorze are famous for their weaving skills and for the use of the 'ensete' or 'false banana' as their staple food. When we visit we work together with the Dorze Lodge which has strong involvement with the local community. During a visit you get a real insight view in the daily life of the Dorze people. It is well worth to visit at one of the market days, in Chencha on Saturday and in Dorze on Monday and Thursday.#Ethiopia #dorze #elephant #trumpet #hut #mamaru #mamaruendris #mamaruethiopiantours

The Dorze people who live on the mountains are known for their textiles. The car circled on the mountain road, through several high mountains, we saw the dense jungle on the high mountains, the roadside occasionally appeared many people selling scarves and hats, and even saw people moving the textile car to the roadside, facing the mountain and the white clouds in the weaving. Mostly a wise and happy tribe, the house they lived in was called the elephant house, a clever elephant-shaped house made of plants, with three vents, much like the elephant's nose and ears. New elephant houses are very high, as the years pass, the place near the ground damage and decay will be cut off layer by layer, the house will slowly fall down, so the house of newlyweds is often a lot higher than the house of the elderly, especially interesting. Traveling on mountain roads where many people live, you will see more and more elephant houses, like fairy tales, and many people can make delicious scones with a plant similar to a banana tree. The plant is called a fake banana, the stems and leaves are similar to bananas, but much taller than banana trees, the fruit is not edible, but the trunk has a lot of fiber, can be used to process food and textiles, even elephant houses will use this material. The guide took us on a tour of the process of making fake banana scones, which were scraped down into fine mud and processed into cakes, and cooked on fire to eat.
I came to DORZE, the village of Elephant House. The Elephant House is made of bamboo and banana leaves (local people are called fake banana tree). The DORZE family has a total of more than 30,000 people. We visited this village of more than 16,000 people. They are famous for textiles. Typical DORZE elephant-shaped houses, Next to it is the honeymoon house, when someone in the family gets married, they will live in this house for three months, and then build an elephant house for new people, and then the cabin may become a kitchen or pantry, basically they need three months to build an elephant house, But the house will be because of the underground invisible termites eating the house all year round, the house will be shorter year by year. This is the use of the house for decades, slowly become a small warehouse. In fact, this kind of elephant house is quite strong and practical. It is repaired every three years and the part of the termite erosion is removed. The height of the house is constantly reduced. This can also be used for 70 years. It is shocking that the elephant house of the people of Dorze is lived with the cattle. The reason is that the winter is very cold. These cows are warm, so they admire human creativity under one eaves! This fruitless plantain tree is thoroughly enjoyed by the Dorze people! Green leaves can feed the animals at home! The fat leaf stem can be scraped down and fermented to make cakes. This freshly scraped fiber can squeeze out the water and can be made of spirits. The remaining fiber can be fermented to make local food Enset cakes. It is so shocking! ~40 degrees spirits and scones look good! But I almost spit out after eating a bite! ! The taste of the fermented cockroach is something I can't bear! The locals said they had to drink a dry mouth, and their mouths "and ~, ~, ~ and " toast! I felt very good after a sip of boredom, but I felt excited and dizzy for ten minutes.
