The Dorze are famous for their weaving skills and for the use of the 'ensete' or 'false banana' as their staple food. When we visit we work together with the Dorze Lodge which has strong involvement with the local community. During a visit you get a real insight view in the daily life of the Dorze people. The Dorze people who live on the mountains are known for their textiles. Traveling on mountain roads where many people live, you will see more and more elephant houses, like fairy tales, and many people can make delicious scones with a plant similar to a banana tree. The plant is called a fake banana, the stems and leaves are similar to bananas, but much taller than banana trees, the fruit is not edible, but the trunk has a lot of fiber, can be used to process food and textiles, even elephant houses will use this material. It is shocking that the elephant house of the people of Dorze is lived with the cattle. The reason is that the winter is very cold. These cows are warm, so they admire human creativity under one eaves! This fruitless plantain tree is thoroughly enjoyed by the Dorze people! Green leaves can feed the animals at home! The fat leaf stem can be scraped down and fermented to make cakes. This freshly scraped fiber can squeeze out the water and can be made of spirits. The remaining fiber can be fermented to make local food Enset cakes. It is so shocking! ~40 degrees spirits and scones look good! But I almost spit out after eating a bite! !
