The history of Jerash is a long and detailed one that is best discovered whilst exploring the ruins and museums of the city itself. The city was conquered by General Pompey in 64 BC when it was named Gerasa. Gerasa grew in wealth and later became a colony in the third century. Due to an earthquake and a number of crusades leading up to the 12th Century, the city’s ancient sites were not discovered again until the end of the 19th century.

Raed Alhaji
The Castle was constructed between 1184 and 1188 by the nephew of the Muslim military leader Saladin. Saladin fought against the Christian military during the Crusades in the 12th Century. The strategic location of the castle enabled Saladin’s army to look out across the Jordan Valley for invaders. The Castle was once only accessible via a drawbridge until 1214 when a new gate was built. Pigeons were used in order to transport messages to the army from the castle. Since the Crusades, the Castle has undergone a number of invasions, rebuilds, and earthquakes which has left very few original 12th Century features. Visitors can learn more about the castle’s history in the museum located on-site.

The Hashemite Plaza is a plaza spread over 20,000 sq and one of the most popular spots in Amman. Located on Al-Hashemi Street, it has pretty foundations, lovely gardens, and seating facilities across the open area. With eateries, restaurants, and cafes a visit to the Hashemite Plaza is a pleasant way to spend an eveningNamed after the Jordanian Royal family, the eastern end of the plaza is one of the best places to take a stroll and enjoy the surrounding views. Also, the Amman Book Festival is conducted here each year. The Hashemite Plaza is surrounded by a couple of landmark Roman ruins. The Roman Theatre looks splendid with its 6000 seats looming on the southern side of the Hashemite Plaza. On the eastern side is Odeon, the smaller theatre. A short distance afar is Nymphaeum, the Roman public fountain. Besides, the Citadel Hill stands tall above the Hashemite Plaza and offers some great bird-eye views of it from its top.

Raed Alhaji
Located in a valley surrounded by fertile hills, the city of Jerash was settled around the seventh millennium B.C. Thanks to its position at a crossroad between the north-south route that connected Syria with Trans-Jordan, and the east-west road that connected the Mediterranean Sea and the Jordan Valley with the badia (the arid steppe), the site gained importance under Antiochus IV (175 – 164 B.C.). During the Roman period, Jerash, then known as Gerasa, became one of the most prosperous cities of the Decapolis. However, although it retained some importance during the Byzantine era (when churches and a synagogue were built), the site was progressively abandoned after the collapse of the Umayyad caliphate.
