Nagara River

The Nagara River, which flows through the center of Gifu City, and Gifu Castle are shared as a symbol of Gifu City, and the water in the Nagara River basin was selected as one of the "100 Famous Waters". The Nagara River is home to a variety of fish, and many natural sweetfish fishing enthusiasts and fishermen are often seen. It is also the location of the Nagara River Cormorant Fishing, which still maintains the ancient tradition. In summer, people will play on the beach and hold outdoor barbecue dinners, which are very lively. The 1.3-kilometer path along the river from Nagara Bridge to the upper reaches is built as a promenade, where you can enjoy the beauty of Nagara River and Mount Jinhua while walking. During the cormorant fishing period, you can watch the cormorant fishing up close with the brightly lit Gifu Castle in the background. In addition, 400 Somei-yoshino cherry trees are planted on the south bank of Nagara River. In early April every year, the area from the riverside to the Gifu Park Japan-China Friendship Garden is covered with cherry blossoms in full bloom, attracting visitors day and night.
