The Unknown Soldier Monument, built in 1928 in front of the Greek Parliament building, commemorates the unsung Greek heroes who died in the war to escape Turkish rule. The main body of the Unknown Soldier Monument is an unnamed Soldier relief, an ancient Greek soldier wearing a helmet lying on a slab. On both sides are the embossed words of the famous Greek family Pericles in a eulogy from the 5th century BC: "This is the tomb of the world's outstanding warriors" and "the spiritual bed for the unnamed warriors". The embossed is 11 place names on the bottom left and 12 on the bottom right. These names are historically places where Greek forces fought foreign forces.
