Ancient Weir Home of Painting

7.5
4.6/5

The Ancient Weir Home of Painting is located on the banks of the Oujiang River in Lishui, Zhejiang. It consists of two major areas facing each other across the river: one side is the "Ancient Weir" where Yantou Village is located, and the other is the "Home of Painting" where Dagangtou Town is situated. The two sides are connected by cruise boats, with the journey taking about 10 minutes. Enjoying the scenic views of the Oujiang River from the boat is itself a highlight of this itinerary. On one side of "Ancient Weir" stands the Tongji Weir, the protagonist built during the Southern Dynasties and operating for over 1,500 years: the arched dam lies across the Songyin Stream, diverting water into canals that traverse the Bihu Plain, still irrigating tens of thousands of acres of fertile farmland today. Together with the Tongji Sluice, the Three-Cave Stone Culvert, and the Ye Channel, it forms a complete ancient water conservancy system. Among them, the Three-Cave Stone Culvert allows the canal and mountain stream to flow separately at different levels, vividly dubbed the ancient "overwater interchange." Stone inscriptions from various dynasties, including the "Tongji Weir Regulations" established by Fan Chengda during the Southern Song Dynasty when he served as the prefect of Chuzhou, still stand beside the weir. Within Yantou Village, the camphor trees planted to stabilize the dam have grown into clusters of thousand-year-old ancient camphors. Walking along the cobblestone country path, the Wenchang Pavilion from the Jiaqing era of the Qing Dynasty, ancient streets, pavilions, and celadon kiln sites are scattered throughout. The "painting village" on the opposite bank has a distinct character: Around the 1980s, artists from various regions gathered in Dagangtou to sketch by the river, gradually forming an oil painting community known as the "Lishui Barbizon." Today, the old riverside street in the town is lined with galleries and art sketching bases. On clear days, you can often see rows of students painting by the Oujiang River with their easels. It's recommended to explore both riverbanks during your visit: take a boat across the river to see the ancient weir, then return to the painting village's old street. The sunset over the Oujiang River is a signature scene here, with occasional white sails gliding by—a sight many photography enthusiasts wait patiently to capture.Lishui · 26.1km from Yunhe

The Window of Shexiang is known as "Pearl of Xiaoxi", "Jingning University" and "Furong Town in South Zhejiang". The beautiful legend of the Floating Umbrella Ancient Ferry is also known as the first in the south of the Yangtze River. This place has convenient water and land transportation, prosperous commerce and trade, pays attention to farming and reading, and forms a quaint front-store-backyard-style mountain commercial street and slate street with Ming and Qing styles in architecture, which is highly playable. The folklore of the "Three Princesses Welcoming Their Relatives" and the derived "Chao Shi Ding" of the She nationality are fascinating and very interesting. "The folk stunt of drying eggs on a bamboo pole has a strong mysterious color, which makes people applaud. There are also many fun traditional festivals such as "Qing Qiao" festival, "March 3", "Huoshen Festival", etc. The marriage of the She nationality is unique. It has a lot of style, such as blocking the road to welcome relatives, toasting wine, singing opposites, etc. It is very lively. The Dajun rafting project in Shexiang is a key tourism project. A thrilling rafting path. Bamboo rafting has four walls and a reef group of Shitan and nine beaches throughout the whole process, forming a wonderful scenery on the water where the beaches and pools are connected; As the stream goes straight down, it has a 100% hurricane feeling, and at the same time, you can enjoy the beautiful scenery of She Township with Tan Li, Feng Qi, Lin Shi, and people.Jingning · 18.3km from Yunhe

West Lake

West Lake is undoubtedly the epitome of Hangzhou's beauty. The famous "Ten scenes of West Lake" surround its shores, where nature and culture complement each other, forming the core area of Hangzhou tourism. You don't need to visit every attraction - instead, spend half a day or a full day strolling along the lake. However you choose to enjoy it, the experience will surely lift your spirits. West Lake is the core attraction of Hangzhou, surrounded by clouds and mountains on three sides and the city on one side. The Su Causeway and Bai Causeway stretch across the lake, dividing it into several water areas. The lakeside scenery is highlighted by the "Ten Scenes of West Lake" from the Southern Song Dynasty, along with the later "New Ten Scenes" and "Three Additional Scenes," featuring over a hundred attractions along the shore and mountains. Pavilions, temples, pagodas, gardens, causeways, and islands complement the distant mountains and nearby waters, while legends like the Broken Bridge where Lady White Snake met Xu Xian add a layer of storytelling to the landscape. West Lake extends east from Songmuchang in Hangzhou and the north of Baolu Road turning to Shaoniangong Square, passing Baisha Road, Huancheng West Road, Hubin Road, and Nanshan Road to the south of Wansong Ridge, covering all attractions including Wu Mountain, Ziyang Mountain, and Yunju Mountain. To the south, it stretches from Gulou along the eastern foothills of Wu Mountain, Ziyang Mountain, and Yunju Mountain, passing Fengshanmen and Fenghuangshan Road, then following the West Lake water diversion channel to the north bank of the Qiantang River, turning to the Coral Sand Reservoir and ending north of Liufangling. To the west, it runs from Liufangling, Zhugan Mountain, Jiuqu Ridge, and Mingren Ridge to Meiren Peak, Beigaofeng, Lingfeng Mountain, and east of the ridge line of Laohe Mountain. To the north, it follows the foothills of Laohe Mountain (west wall of Zhejiang University), turns 30 m north of Qingzhiwu Road, connects to Yugu Road, Zhejiang University Road, and Shuguang Road, ending south of Songmuchang. West Lake has over 100 attractions, renowned for its "Ten scenes of West Lake", "New ten scenes of West Lake" and "Three reviews · Ten scenes of West Lake". West Lake overview You can explore West Lake on foot, by cruise, on electric bikes, via self-drive, or by riding. Among these, electric bikes are the most convenient and effortless option, with hop-on-hop-off sightseeing vehicles circling the entire lake. Riding along the lakeshore is romantic and leisurely, with many public bike rental spots available. For a boat tour, there are nearly 10 docks around the lake offering various vessels and routes. We highly recommend taking a cruise to Three Pools Mirroring the Moon at the lake center while enjoying the scenic views. Alternatively, you can hail a hand-rowed boat for a more flexible experience with a boatman guiding your tour. North line scenery The north shore of West Lake gathers quite a few attractions, usually starting from the remnant snow on broken bridge at the northeast corner and heading west all the way to Yuewang Temple. You can walk along Bai Causeway to Solitary Hill, visiting cultural attractions like Xiling Seal Engravers' Society, Zhejiang Provincial Museum, Chinese Seal Art Museum, and Zhongshan Park's Crane Pavilion. Enjoy authentic West Lake vinegar fish at Louwailou Restaurant, then cross Xiling Bridge to leave the island - Yuewang Temple and Breeze-ruffled lotus at Quyuan Garden are just a short distance away. If it's a summer day with strong sunlight, it is recommended to stroll along Beishan road, hiding under the dense shade of trees to admire the curve of Broken bridge and the swaying weeping willows on Bai causeway opposite. There are many entrances along the way leading to Precious stone hill, where you can hike for views, and descend to reach Yuewang temple. Yuewang square has many small shops for snacks, and the Impression West Lake show here in the evening is also worth watching. If you have ample time and energy, you can also head to Su causeway from here for a walk to enjoy the panoramic view of West Lake. Southeast coast (Lakeside-Nanshan Road) Another area with a concentration of attractions is the Hubin Road-Nanshan Road along the southeastern coast. Hubin Road is located at the junction between Hangzhou's urban area and the attraction, offering views of West Lake, a dock for West Lake cruises, and the iconic music fountain. The advantage of Hubin Road is its quick access from the attraction to the downtown business district, making it suitable for travelers with a tight itinerary to make a short stop. Head south from Hubin road and walk along Nanshan road, where you can visit attractions like Orioles singing in the willows, Long bridge, Leifeng pagoda, Evening bell at Nanping hill, and Viewing fish at flower harbor. The distance between adjacent attractions is not far, so you can walk or take a sightseeing bus or public transport, which are also convenient. You can arrange a day to visit a few of them according to your preference. Among them, Leifeng pagoda and Evening bell at Nanping hill can be visited in the evening. Listening to the bell at Jingci temple and overlooking the night view of West lake from Leifeng pagoda are both great experiences.China · Hangzhou

Yangjiatang Village

Yangjiatang Village is hidden among the mountains of Sandu Township, Songyang County. The entire village faces west, situated on a steep and narrow hillside. More than 20 Qing Dynasty residences with timber-earth structures are arranged up the slope, with a vertical drop of several m. From a distance, it looks like a massive building facade covering the hillside, with the rammed earth walls glowing warm gold in the sunlight. At its center is the Song Ancestral Hall, first built during the Qianlong era. Old buildings like the Dide School and the rice-pounding workshop are arranged around it, with layers of horse-head walls facing each other. The beams, pillars, doors, windows, and corbels and brackets are covered with wood carvings of auspicious patterns. The rammed earth walls of every household are inscribed with sentences from "Zhu Zi's Family Maxims," the "Classic of Filial Piety," and the Song family precepts, interspersed with murals. Although weathered after hundreds of years, one can still read the family tradition of valuing culture and education here. From afternoon to evening, the setting sun shines directly on the layered rammed earth walls, covering the entire village in a warm golden hue. Walking up the stone steps from the old camphor tree at the village entrance, if you turn back as you walk, you can see different village facades from different heights.Songyang · 38.4km from Yunhe

The weather wasn't great the two days we went, but we still managed to see the rice terraces. There was a small problem though; our tickets weren't for a specific time slot, the 4th and 5th, but when we tried to enter on the 5th, it showed as cancelled. However, we were allowed in anyway, and we were able to see the rice terraces on the 5th, which was much better than on the 4th.

The most beautiful place in the entire Lishui trip is Kenggen Stone Village in Baiyun Lake Scenic Area. It is much more beautiful than Jiuquyunhuan, and there are fewer people. It is really a paradise on earth. We found this place in the air by taking a cable car. It was so beautiful to walk from here to Wuyunfei Waterfall.

To get to Ancient Weir, you need to take a boat from Huaxiang. Tongji Ancient Weir is a picturesque place with beautiful mountains and clear waters, and many ancient trees, including one over 1500 years old. You can have lunch at a privately-run restaurant in the mountains. If you're driving, you can also go there. Huaxiang is like an ancient town where you can stroll around and have a coffee. ☕️

We stayed at a homestay near the Qixingdun Observation Deck, called Yunhe Yunjia in the Fields, which we liked very much. You can watch the sunrise in the morning, and you can see the terraced fields from the balcony. There are also tents for rent at the Qixingdun Observation Deck, which is very lively. There are also many restaurants.

There is absolutely no need to waste time going to this place. It is just an unfinished building. The investment in it is estimated to be quite a lot, but there are no guests going there to play, so there is no business operating properly in it. There are only some homestays here and there. At present, only some people who take photos of ethnic minorities come here. There is no special feature and nothing to visit.

The source of the Daliang Spring is pure and unpolluted. The waterfalls are majestic, the pools are clear and the valleys are secluded. The peaks are beautiful and the forests are vast. The She culture has a long history. The folk customs are simple and the feelings are deep. This is Jingning, where you can appreciate the beauty of the She village with distinct seasons. In this quiet little mountain town, enjoy the mountain wind and look at the flowers in the fields, and the little time becomes real and beautiful.

Accompanying the elderly to see West Lake, we bought tickets to go to the small island to see Three Pools Mirroring the Moon. We boarded the boat at Yue Temple Wharf and disembarked at Flower Harbor Viewing Fish Wharf, which also allowed us to visit Leifeng Pagoda and Jingci Temple.

The village is small and quite rustic, with initial signs of commercialization. It's worth a visit for photos, especially at sunset when the scattered ancient villages are accompanied by wisps of smoke rising from their chimneys – a truly beautiful sight. A word of caution: the village's pebbles are difficult to walk on, so wear appropriate shoes. Also, there's a 500-meter-long winding mountain road in and out of the village with extremely high oncoming traffic, making it quite challenging to drive. Traveling during the off-season is strongly recommended.
