Dongshan Wenmei Village

4.6

4.8/5

479 reviews

Wenmei VillageA plum-themed immersive cultural destination blending literature and charm, this approximately 300-acre park features Ming and Qing-style architectural clusters built along mountain contours, with dark-tiled white walls interspersed among expansive plum groves. Every winter and spring, over ten varieties of plum blossoms, including palace pink, cinnabar, and green calyx, bloom in succession, their subtle fragrance mingling with the ancient architecture's upturned eaves. Visitors can stroll through the winding paths of the garden, discovering cultural spaces like the Plum Shadow Study and the Plum Inquiry Hall, or enjoy live Huangmei opera performances at the Rice Field Theater, where traditional art harmonizes with natural scenery. Guests can also participate in hands-on workshops at the intangible cultural heritage center, learning embroidery and bamboo weaving, or study the Song dynasty tea ceremony with masters at the Zen Tea House. The park's specially designed night tour system adds extra charm: light installation art along Moonlight Plum Path and holographic projection shows on the central lake island give traditional cultural elements a modern twist. For families with children, seasonal activities like rice planting and fish catching in the farming experience area, as well as plum grove sketching, provide hands-on educational opportunities to connect with nature. The park preserves native vegetation belts, utilizes mountain terrain to build rainwater collection systems, and interplants local crops among the plum groves, creating a sustainable view of agricultural landscape.

Baiyazhai

3.2

4.6/5

69 reviews

Baiyazhai Attraction is located in the north of Susong County, Anhui Province, at the junction with the southwest of Taihu County, with a total area of 82 square kilometers, spanning Zhifeng Township, Liangting Town and Aikou Township, with the main Attraction in Zhifeng Township. It is 5 kilometers away from National Highway 105, 15 kilometers from the entrance of G50 and Susong Station of Hejiu Railway, and 25 kilometers from the planned Susong Station of He'an Jiu High-speed Railway. Baiyazhai was built in the late Yuan Dynasty and is an ancient military fortress with a long history and large scale. Because of its rugged terrain, it is easy to defend and difficult to attack, and it has been a battleground for military strategists of all dynasties, and is known as the "Little Great Wall of the South". After Wu Shijie in the late Yuan Dynasty, he built a fort to resist the invaders - Shi Kefa in the late Ming Dynasty, turned defeat into victory and wrote the title "Shang Yicheng" - during the Taiping Heavenly Kingdom period, he fought fiercely against the Qing army - "The 27th Red Army set out from here" - Liu Deng's army commanded the south to cross the river... After nearly 700 years of wind and rain erosion, it is still basically intact. Baiyazhai, as a relic of the fortress culture and military culture left by Chinese history, has important historical, artistic and scientific value. In July 1985, Anhui Province listed Baiyazhai as a key cultural relic protection unit in the province. In July 1987, Anhui Province approved Baiyazhai as a provincial scenic spot. In May 2000, the China Cultural Relics Protection and Publicity Committee and the China Cultural Relics Protection Century Tour Organizing Committee awarded Baiyazhai the title of "Chinese Historical and Cultural Heritage". In 2001, it was rated as the fifth batch of national key cultural relics protection units. In January 2019, it was approved as a national AAAA-level tourist Attraction. On July 1, 2020, it was awarded the plaque "Baiyazhai Red Traditional Education On-site Teaching Base". [Baiyazhai Stone Carving] At the entrance - Zhao Puchu, former president of the Buddhist Association of China, wrote in his own handwriting. On the mountain - Li Guangzu, a calligrapher of the Red Army, wrote on the stone. [Panlongmen] The gatehouses are all built with large stones and are in the shape of a half-moon arch bridge. It is about 10 meters high, 8 meters wide and 5 meters thick. There is a gun muzzle on the top, which can be used for both firing and observation. Because the rocks on both sides of the gate are exposed and look like dragon ridges, they are commonly known as "dragon bone stones", so it is named "Panlongmen". [Monument to Wu Shijie] The founder of Baiyazhai. In the late Yuan Dynasty, in order to protect the country and the people, he organized local farmers to build a stronghold to resist the invaders. After Wu Shijie's death, the villagers buried him on the mountain of Baiyazhai to thank him for his great kindness. [Ladder to Heaven] Shi Kefa defeated Zhang Xianzhong with a surprise attack here. The ladder has a slope of 70 degrees, a total length of 100 meters, and a total of more than 280 steps. ["The Best"] Shi's army fought against Zhang's army, and after a fierce battle, they turned defeat into victory. He wrote the four words "The Best" here in person, which is a stone to commemorate his achievements. Next to it is the inscription "The holy name of Yashan Fudi Xiqi, Xinjie Dingpai Yuanzheng Bodhi" by Monk Xue'an. [Guandi Temple] Also known as "Bai Ya Temple". The Guandi Temple was preserved until after liberation. The current Guandi Temple was rebuilt with funds raised by the public on the site of the original Guandi Temple Sutra Library. [Phoenix Lying and Dragon Resting] After the establishment of the 27th Red Army, it won its first victory. Guo Shushen wrote the four characters "Phoenix Lying and Dragon Resting" in front of the stone wall of Dongying Peak, implying that Baiyazhai is a place where dragons and tigers are hidden. [Wangjiang Pavilion] Wangjiang Pavilion is one of the landmark buildings of Baiyazhai. Passengers on the Shanghai-Chengdu Expressway, Hefei-Jiujiang Railway, and National Highway 105 can see it clearly. It echoes the Tingquan Pavilion opposite, one large and one small. This pavilion is located in the south of the village. When the autumn weather is high and refreshing, you can see the Yangtze River here like a long ribbon, hence the name "Wangjiang Pavilion".

Shilian Cave National Forestry Park

4.9/5

71 reviews

Shiliandong National Forest Park is located in the suburbs of Susong County, at the junction of Anhui, Hubei and Jiangxi provinces. The park is dominated by forest landscapes and based on natural landscapes. Leisure and vacation facilities have been built. It is a multifunctional comprehensive forest park with the functions of an urban entertainment area. The park is full of strange peaks and rocks, verdant pines, graceful bamboos, singing birds and fragrant flowers. The Shilian Cave is full of strange rocks in various shapes, with misty clouds and unfathomable depths. It is also rich in cultural landscapes, myths and legends. There are many kinds of wild animals, which have high ornamental and protection value. The main attractions include: Shilian Ancient Cave, Longxiao Stone, Sigu Pavilion, Yixiantian, Heyi Ancient Pool, Buddha Seat Stone, Wuzu Zen Forest, Tingyu Pavilion and amusement park. It is an ideal paradise for people to return to nature and travel. The main landscapes are as follows: Shilian Cave: It is embedded in the middle of Hexi where there are lush trees. The cave entrance is steep and rugged with vines and creepers. In front of the cave, ancient trees with twisted branches and trunks protect the cave entrance. In front of the cave, there is a platform built on the cliff. The stone chamber in the cave is hollow, with dripping springs and upside-down stalactites. There are the Dharma-Giving Cave and the sculptures of the Eight Immortals, which are vivid and lifelike, and many myths and legends are left behind! Tingyu Pavilion: This is the only way to enter and exit Shilian Cave. The water in the pool flows out from the Jade Stream in Dongting Lake, which is based on the real scene and the poem of Li Bai "Bamboo shadows sweep the autumn moon, lotus clothes fall on the ancient pond". Sigu Pavilion and Yixiantian: Built on the top of Hexi Mountain, it is a double-layer hexagonal pavilion with flying eaves. From here, you can look at Tianzhu in the north, Kuanglu in the south, Wuzu in the west, and Xiaogu in the east, and you can enjoy the thousand-mile cloud mountain and the vast cloud waves. On the west side of Sigu Pavilion, there is a peculiar group of rocks standing across the road and on the cliff. It is hollow below and has a gap above, so it is called "Yixiantian". Wuzu Zen Forest: According to legend, Hongren, the fifth patriarch of Zen Buddhism, once rested here and loved the quietness of the stone caves and the beauty of the mountains and forests. He opened a temple here to preach and promote Zen, and built Wuzu Zen Forest. This temple was huge before the Ming Dynasty. After the war, it was repaired and destroyed again. Now the first phase of the project, Wuzu Hall and some ancillary facilities have been built. The temple is now filled with Buddhist chants and the incense is gradually becoming more popular.

Mount Huangshan Scenic Area

9.1

4.8/5

73.5k reviews

Mount Huangshan Scenic Area is located in Tangkou Town, Huangshan District, Huangshan City. Since ancient times, Mount Huangshan has been one of China's most renowned mountains. Its peculiar pines, strange rocks, sea of clouds, and hot springs are known as the "Four Wonders" of Mount Huangshan. In addition to these, rime, snowscapes, and sunrises are also views that visitors will not miss. There is an ancient saying: "Having visited the Five Great Mountains, one need not look at any other mountains; having visited Mount Huangshan, one need not look at the Five Great Mountains." The attraction is divided into the south gate, west gate, and north gate. The vast majority of visitors enter and exit through the south gate, which has two entrances and exits—front mountain and back mountain—both close to Tangkou Town at the foot of the mountain. The town has also become a transfer hub for visiting Huangshan, and many visitors arrive here in advance to stay overnight. From Tangkou Town to the attraction entrance, you need to take the Huangshan New National Line shuttle bus, which stops at the front mountain gate (Ciguang Pavilion), the back mountain gate (Yungu Temple), and the Huangshan-Hot Spring attraction. Visiting the attraction mainly involves two routes up the mountain, the front mountain and the back mountain, both leading to one of the main peaks, Bright Summit. On the other side of Bright Summit, there is also a loop route — the West Sea Grand Canyon. Front mountain The front mountain refers to the hiking route starting from Ciguang Pavilion to Yuping Tower at the summit (accessible directly by the Yuping Cable Car), as well as the Mount Huangshan Scenic Area - Lotus Peak and Tiandu Peak areas at the summit. The scenery of the front mountain is grand and majestic, making it very suitable for enjoying panoramic views from the cable car. Both the highest peak, Mount Huangshan Scenic Area - Lotus Peak, and the other main peak, Tiandu Peak, are located here (the two peaks open alternately). There are also classic attractions such as the Guest-Greeting Pine, Jiulong Peak - Carp Back, Hundred-Step Ladder, One-Line Sky, and Tianhai. Back mountain The back mountain refers to the hiking route from Yungu Temple to Bai'e Ridge (accessible directly by the Mount Huangshan Yungu Cableway), as well as the mountaintop areas behind Bai'e Ridge such as Shixin Peak, Mount Huangshan Scenic Area - Shizi Peak, and West Sea Grand Canyon - Paiyun Pavilion. The scenery of the back mountain consists mostly of exquisite mountain views, suitable for enjoying on foot along the way. Flying Stone and Monkey Watching the Sea are both located here. West sea grand canyon West sea grand canyon officially opened in 2000. The canyon is deep and the scenery is very magnificent, and it is known as the true gathering place of Huangshan's essential scenery. West sea grand canyon can be entered from West Sea Grand Canyon - Paiyun Pavilion in the summit area of the back mountain, and after looping around inside the canyon, you return to the main peak area of Tianhai. It takes about 2 hours to walk down from West Sea Grand Canyon - Paiyun Pavilion to the bottom of the canyon, and then you can take a cable car to Tianhai. Route recommendations The standard way to visit Huangshan is a two-day tour, with routes divided into ascending via the front mountain and descending via the back mountain (front mountain - West Sea Grand Canyon - back mountain) or ascending via the back mountain and descending via the front mountain (back mountain - West Sea Grand Canyon - front mountain). Ascending via the front mountain and descending via the back mountain is suitable for taking the cable car up and walking down, which is both relaxing and allows you to enjoy the exquisite scenery of the latter half. However, since the essential route of the West Sea Grand Canyon runs from West Sea Grand Canyon - Paiyun Pavilion to Tianhai, you will have to backtrack along a section of the trail. It is possible to visit Huangshan in just one day, but the itinerary will be tight. It is recommended to ascend via the rear mountain and descend via the front mountain, taking the cable car both ways, and to either skip climbing the main peaks of the front mountain (Mount Huangshan Scenic Area - Lotus Peak / Tiandu Peak) or skip the West Sea Grand Canyon. Stay selection There are several accommodation options at the summit, mainly concentrated in areas such as Guangming Peak Tianhai, West Sea Grand Canyon-Paiyun Pavilion, Bai'e Ridge, and North Sea. Guangming Peak Tianhai is a great spot for watching the sunrise, and it is also suitable for storing luggage while exploring the West Sea Grand Canyon. Bai'e Ridge is the upper station of the Huangshan Yungu Cableway on the rear mountain; if you typically enter the attraction from the rear mountain in the afternoon, staying here is quite convenient.

Wangxian Valley

9

4.5/5

26.7k reviews

Wangxian Valley is located at the northern foot of Lingshan Mountain, hidden among mountain streams and gorges. It was formerly an abandoned granite quarry and, after years of ecological restoration, has been built into the valley town it is today. The attraction is structured around the Jiuniu Stream Gorge, where streams flow through the valley and waterfalls cascade in layers; the Sandie Waterfall and Sankou Pot are among its most recognizable natural views. In summer, visitors can also experience gorge rafting that winds through the ancient town. The cliffside building complex on Baihe Cliff is the attraction's signature view. On the nearly 100-meter-high cliff face, cantilevered guest rooms, plank walkways, and viewing platforms climb upward in a zigzag pattern, looking up from the valley floor like pavilions in the sky. After nightfall, the cliff lights come on one after another, and the entire valley resembles a painted scroll of lights; standing on Lanyue Bridge and gazing at the full panorama of Baihe Cliff is a classic photo spot here. The Yanpu Old Street in the valley restores the appearance of traditional dwellings in northeastern Jiangxi, with rammed earth walls, bluestone slab paths, and horse-head walls interwoven throughout. Workshop Street is lined with traditional handicraft workshops for brown sugar, brewing, papermaking, cloth dyeing, and more, where you can watch ancient production methods on site; Mingchan Alley gathers intangible cultural heritage crafts such as bamboo weaving and woodwork. Bawei Street offers a dazzling array of Jiangxi-style snacks such as dengzhan guo and taro dumplings. When visiting, it is recommended to enter the attraction in the afternoon so that you can clearly see the gorge landforms in daylight without missing the spectacular lighting after nightfall. The entire route requires walking and climbing stairs, so comfortable, slip-resistant shoes are advisable.

Wuyuan Huangling Scenic Area

8.9

4.6/5

24k reviews

Wuyuan Huangling Scenic Area sits among the Shi'er Mountains of Wuyuan, with the ancient village of Huangling at its core—a Huizhou ancient village nearly six hundred years old. The village is built along steep mountain slopes, where "there is no flat ground three chi wide"; residences are arranged in a fan-shaped, terraced layout around the water outlet, with white walls and dark tiles layered one upon another on the cliffside, earning it the name "Tiyun Renjia" (Households in the Terraced Clouds). Surrounded by ancient trees and terraced fields, it is itself a three-dimensional painting of a mountain village. Huangling is the birthplace of the "shaiqiu" (autumn sun-drying) culture. Constrained by the terrain, villagers have since ancient times set up drying racks on rooftops to dry crops; every fall, red chili peppers, yellow chrysanthemums, pumpkins, and more fill the rooftop drying trays, with colors shifting as the seasons change. In spring, rapeseed flowers bloom in layers across ten thousand mu of terraced fields, dotted with pink peach blossoms and snow-white pear blossoms; the lower-elevation first-phase flower sea and the higher-elevation second-phase Gaoling flower sea bloom in succession, with the flowering period lasting into April. Riding the cable car up the mountain, visitors can overlook the entire golden flower field, and the view is especially open when passing the Leixin Bridge glass walkway, with layered terraced fields and distant mountains below. Tianjie in the village is the main sightseeing axis paved with bluestone slabs, linking classic Huizhou-style ancient buildings; shops line the street with workshops behind storefronts, and along the way visitors can taste authentic Wuyuan snacks such as steamed cakes, Qingming guo, and huizhi guo, and also take part in making folk snacks and handicrafts. Visiting in fall, besides the spectacular shaiqiu scene, the village's red maples are also a highlight, with maple forests fully tinted and echoing the harvest colors drying on the rooftops. Throughout the year, Huangling has something to offer in every season, and its core charm always lies in the unique Huizhou everyday vitality of this mountain village.
