Before going, I read many travel guides for Huangling, but after actually going, I realized there were many pitfalls that no one had mentioned.
First, transportation is incredibly exhausting. Getting there from the high-speed rail station involves passing numerous scenic spots, and during holidays, traffic jams are unbearable. Booking a guesthouse in Xiaoyong Village is even more difficult, as the drive up a long mountain road is fraught with traffic congestion at the village entrance. The most ridiculous thing is that you have to take a tricycle from the village entrance to the hotel! The gravel road is so bumpy it feels like your internal organs are going to come out; unless you're carrying luggage, walk if possible…
Second, the restaurants in the village are quite expensive, while the guesthouses are slightly better.
Finally, regarding the scenic area itself, the only advantage is that you don't have to queue for the cable car from the village. However, you have to walk across a bridge to reach the village within the scenic area, and there's a glass walkway in the middle that's extremely shaky. Those afraid of heights should hold on tightly to their companions. The food inside the scenic area is mediocre, and it's crowded, but the scenery is truly beautiful, with buildings arranged in a charming, staggered pattern and ancient trees.
In summary, if you want to see sunbathing and enjoy this kind of scenery, I recommend a trip to Huangling. However, try to stay in a guesthouse at the foot of the mountain for easier access to everything…
