Three Lanes And Seven Alleys

6.5k reviews
"Three Lanes and Seven Alleys" is located in the heart of Fuzhou, collectively referring to ten historic lanes and alleys lining both sides of Nanhou Street from north to south. The "three lanes" are: Shuixie Stage, Wenru Lane, and Guanglu Lane. The "seven alleys" are: Yangqiao Alley, Langguan Alley, Anmin Alley, Huang Alley, Ta Alley, Gong Alley, and Jibi Alley. "Who would have thought the recluse of Five Willows and Lone Pine would dwell amidst Three Lanes and Seven Alleys?" This entire ancient residential quarter, first built during the Ming Dynasty, has been remarkably preserved through centuries of history spanning both Ming and Qing dynasties. The neighborhood houses former residences of numerous historical figures and even features a folk culture museum. As the saying goes, to understand a city, you don't need to traverse every street—just stroll down one historic lane at a leisurely pace. Walking through Three Lanes And Seven Alleys brings you closer to the heart of Fuzhou.China · Fuzhou

Xiamen University was founded in 1921 by Mr. Tan Kah Kee, a renowned patriotic overseas Chinese leader, marking the first university established by overseas Chinese in modern Chinese educational history. For a century, the university has upheld its founder's vision, cultivating a distinguished ethos of "patriotism, revolution, self-improvement, and science." With its distinctive educational approach, it has nurtured generations of outstanding talents, making significant contributions to national prosperity, public welfare, and the global dissemination of Chinese culture. The Siming campus is the main campus of Xiamen University, located in Siming District, Xiamen, at the southern tip of Xiamen Island. Nestled between mountains and sea, it is renowned as the "garden university by the sea." The campus features numerous landmark buildings and comprehensive teaching and living facilities, with the Jiageng Building Complex (also known as the Songen Building Complex) standing as its iconic cross-century architectural masterpiece. Completed in 2001 to commemorate the university's 80th anniversary, this complex consists of five buildings: Songen Tower (the main building), Baoxin Liying Building, Chengfeng Building, Zuying Building, and Zhongmingxuan Building. Designed with a symmetrical "one-main-four-auxiliary" layout, the 21-story Songen Tower serves primarily as the administrative center, while the other four six-story buildings are dedicated to public teaching and research. The architectural style inherits and evolves the distinctive "Jiageng Style," featuring red-tiled sloping roofs that harmonize with the campus's historic structures. This fusion of Chinese and Western elements creates a modern complex with contemporary character, forming the landmark core that dominates the campus landscape.Xiamen · 75.9km from Nanjing County

Nanputuo Temple

4.6/5
5.4k reviews
Nanputuo Temple is adjacent to Xiamen University and backed by Wulao Peak. As a millennium-old monastery with thriving incense in southern Fujian, many travelers arrange to visit both sites on the same day. The temple was first built in the late Tang Dynasty, underwent several rises and declines, and was rebuilt by Marquis Jinghai Shi Lang during the Kangxi reign of the Qing Dynasty. It enshrines Guanyin Bodhisattva and is located south of Mount Putuo in Zhejiang, hence the name "Nanputuo Temple." On one side of the temple stands the Southern Fujian Buddhist College, founded in 1925, which is one of China's modern Buddhist institutions with a long educational history. The temple's east and west mountain gates stand close to each other. Entering through them, visitors first encounter the liberation pond and lotus pond, where turtles bask on rocks and stone pagodas stand by the water. The main halls ascend along the central axis with the mountain's slope, arranged in sequence as the heavenly king hall, main hall of the great hero, great compassion hall, and scripture repository: the heavenly king hall enshrines a perpetually smiling Maitreya at its center, with Skanda standing behind holding his vajra staff; the main hall of the great hero houses the buddhas of the three periods, while the three western saints stand behind it; the great compassion hall, built on a high stone platform, is an octagonal wooden pavilion with triple flying eaves, containing four guanyin statues facing cardinal directions—three being 48-armed guanyin exquisitely crafted; the scripture repository safeguards Buddhist artifacts including the blood-written Lotus Sutra from the Wanli era and a white porcelain guanyin by renowned Ming dynasty ceramic artist He Chaozong. Bell and drum towers flank the courtyard, while the arhat hall displays eighteen arhats arranged on either side. The temple grounds preserve numerous cliff inscriptions by notable figures, with the massive carved "Buddha" character by monk Zhenhui from the Qing dynasty on the rear cliff being particularly striking—often drawing travelers to pause for photos. For mountain hiking, ascend the stone steps behind the temple to Wulao Peak, where "Five elders piercing the clouds" ranks among Xiamen's eight great views as designated in the Qing dynasty, offering summit vistas over Xiamen University and seascapes. Alternatively, touring the temple's main halls requires little time if skipping the climb. For vegetarian meals, you can visit the temple's vegetarian restaurant. Haihui Lou and Puzhao Lou are both garden-style dining buildings. Nanputuo vegetarian cuisine is highly renowned in Xiamen. One signature dish, "Half-moon sinking in the river," features mushrooms and gluten in a soup with a "half-moon" submerged in the broth. It earned this elegant name in the 1960s after being tasted by Guo Moruo. Before leaving, consider taking some Nanputuo vegetarian cakes, available in both sweet and savory flavors. Fillings like mung bean, coconut, and pumpkin are particularly popular, making them famous souvenirs from Xiamen.Xiamen · 75.3km from Nanjing County

Kaiyuan Temple is located in QuanzhouWest Street, Licheng DistrictBuilt in the second year of the Chuigong era during the reign of Empress Wu Zetian of the Tang Dynasty, it has a history of over 1,300 years. It is an important cultural relic along the southeastern coast of China and one of the larger-scale Buddhist temples in Fujian Province. The attractions of the monastery are arranged along the central axisWorship pavilion, the Baiting, the main hall of Kaiyuan Temple, the Sangpeng historic site, the Kaiyuan Temple's Sweet Dew Ordination Platform, the scripture depository, etc. Also,, as well as the stone pagodas on the east and west sides and the east and west corridors. Quanzhou Kaiyuan Temple - The heavenly king hall, also the mountain gate of the temple, was built in 1925. The stone pillars are slightly thinner at the top and bottom, thicker in the middle, shaped like a shuttle, reflecting the Tang dynasty stone pillar style. A wooden couplet hangs on the stone pillars, reading "This place is called the land of Buddha, where every street is filled with saints." It was composed by Zhu Xi, a great Neo-Confucian scholar of the Southern Song dynasty, and written by the modern eminent monk Hongyi. Crossing the mountain gate brings you toWorship pavilionStanding here, you can see the east and west pagodas rising from the ground and the spacious, bright east and west corridors symmetrically arranged on both sides. The east and west pagodas are among the more famous attractions in the area. The east pagoda is called "Zhenguo Pagoda (East Pagoda)," while the west pagoda is named "Renshou Pagoda." Standing over 40 m tall, they are one of the tallest pairs of stone pagodas in China and serve as landmarks and symbols of the ancient city of Quanzhou. Worship pavilionIn front, there is a large stone courtyard where officials and commoners from ancient and modern times gather for activities, becoming particularly lively during events. On both sides of the stone courtyard stand eight large banyan trees, beneath which are arranged 11 ancient sutra pillars and small stupas from the Tang, Song, and Ming dynasties in various styles, as well as two stone tortoises. Then there is the main structure, the Mahavira Hall of Kaiyuan Temple. The Mahavira Hall of Kaiyuan Temple also has an elegant name, "Hundred-Pillar Hall." Originally, the hall was planned to have one hundred pillars, but later, to accommodate the placement of Buddha statues and create space for Buddhist activities, the beams were extended, and the number of pillars was reduced, resulting in the "Hundred-Pillar Hall" with 86 pillars.China · Quanzhou

An ancient city is a carrier of a place's history, culture, and customs. Zhangzhou Ancient City, bearing witness to the city's millennia-long history and culture, is a "living fossil" of Zhangzhou's ancient culture and a "living archive" witnessing the city's historical and cultural changes. An ancient city is a repository of memories, emotions, and nostalgia. In the ancient city, you can find the taste of your childhood, hear the everyday chatter of your neighbors, and feel the warmth of home. Here, you can see the historical accumulation of Zhangzhou, feel its cultural heritage, and find your spiritual home. An ancient city is an engine for a place's cultural tourism and economy. In the ancient city, you can taste authentic Minnan snacks, buy handicrafts and intangible cultural heritage products, and enjoy traditional operas and folk performances. Here, you can experience the city's cultural charm, enjoy its cultural benefits, and reap its cultural rewards. Zhangzhou Ancient City is one of Fujian Province's famous historical and cultural cities and an important part of Minnan culture. Founded during the Kaiyuan era of the Tang Dynasty, it has evolved over a thousand years and still retains many precious historical and cultural relics. The ancient city of Zhangzhou is characterized by a network of nine main streets and eighteen lanes, forming a complete and open spatial layout. The nine main streets are: Beijing Road, Xinhua Road, Zhongshan Road, Taiwan Road, Hong Kong Road, Macau Road, Shengli Road, Dananmen Road, and Buzheng Road; the eighteen lanes are: Shuqian Lane, Yuanwen Lane, Yuanwu Lane, Yuanheng Lane, Yuanli Lane, Yuanzhen Lane, Yuanchun Lane, Yuanzheng Lane, Yuancheng Lane, Yuanxiang Lane, Yuanrui Lane, Yuantai Lane, Yuanhua Lane, Yuanqing Lane, Yuanzhi Lane, Yuanren Lane, Yuansheng Lane, and Fuqian Heng Lane.

During my recent trip from Fuzhou to Wenzhou, I discovered a hidden gem of a hotel – the Platinum Cloud View Luxury Hotel. The location is simply divine; it's right across the street from MixC shopping mall and within walking distance of Sanyang Wetland, making shopping, dining, and sightseeing all easily accessible. The Platinum Cloud View Hotel boasts a brand-new light luxury style, combining marble with natural wood. The lobby is quiet and sophisticated, completely free from the noise of the city center. I booked a high-floor room with panoramic floor-to-ceiling windows offering breathtaking views. The sunset over the wetland and the city skyline were stunning, making for perfect photo opportunities. The receptionist was incredibly friendly. I was lucky enough to get an upgrade to a family room. The room was clean, spacious, and the latex mattress was soft yet supportive. The soundproofing was excellent throughout the night. The bathroom featured a separate shower and toilet, a smart toilet, and a 1.8m extra-large bathtub facing the view – soaking in the tub while enjoying the night view was incredibly relaxing. The toiletries had a subtle fragrance and felt high-quality. What I really want to mention is that the hotel's amenities exceeded my expectations: a heated swimming pool, gym, and self-service laundry room are all available, free parking is provided for those driving, and 24-hour butler service is available on call. The buffet breakfast deserves special praise! It offers a complete selection of Chinese and Western dishes, including local sticky rice, freshly cooked rice noodles, fish cakes, and wontons. After shopping at MixC in the evening, you can return to the hotel and take a morning stroll in the wetlands to breathe in the fresh air. It's a top choice for couples, offering much better value than other hotels in the same area. I'll definitely stay here again next time I'm in Wenzhou! LL

The 68-nautical-mile scenic area is well worth a visit. It's the closest point between mainland China and Taiwan. Be careful not to cross the yellow lines marked in the scenic area, as it can be dangerous. The staff are very responsible and will blow whistles to warn you if you cross the yellow lines. It's a great place for taking photos, and it's not too hot to walk around in the scenic area right now.

When visiting Fuzhou, a leisurely stroll through the Three Lanes and Seven Alleys is a must. Walking on the cool cobblestone streets, looking up at the staggered saddle-shaped walls, white walls and gray tiles, you'll see the quintessential old Fuzhou. No need to rush to see the must-see spots; just wander into any alley, and you'll find ancient houses and courtyards brimming with stories. The streets are bustling with the aroma of everyday life—meat dumplings, fish balls, and peanut soup fill the air—a truly blissful experience as you stroll and savor the delicious treats.

Walking around Furong Lake after entering the school gate is a pleasant experience. The red brick and green tile buildings in the Jiarong style are pleasing to the eye, and the large trees along the road provide shade, keeping you cool and dry. I didn't feel tired even after strolling around for half a day. The overall atmosphere is quiet and perfect for leisurely exploration.

There weren't many people at Nanputuo Temple on the weekend, and the free incense at the entrance was a thoughtful touch. The temple buildings were simple and clean, and climbing the steps offered views of Xiamen University and the sea. The path was shaded by trees, providing coolness from the sun. I bought some vegetarian pastries, which were light and not greasy. Overall, it was a relaxing and comfortable experience.

We didn't catch any squid, but the owner helped us by casting a net every half hour, bringing up quite a few. We had a barbecue on the boat, which was a nice way to relax and have some fun in the evening. Even though we didn't catch any fish, we still had a barbecue and seafood porridge dinner.
