Healed by the blue of Pumo Yumco! The ultimate romance of Tibet's "plateau sapphire"
If Kula Kangri is the majestic symbol of Tibet's sacred mountains, then Pumo Yumco is a gentle gem lost on the plateau. This holy lake, at an altitude of 4980 meters, with its pure, exquisite blue, fulfilled all my imaginations about Tibetan lakes 🌊
Starting from Lhasa, driving south along the provincial highway after Yamdrok Yumco, as the car rounded the last mountain bend, Pumo Yumco suddenly came into view—it wasn't just ordinary lake blue, but an icy blue infused with glacial light, a deep azure blended with the clear sky. Standing on the viewing platform, the lake resembled an endless sapphire, inlaid between snow-capped mountains and grasslands, even the wind carrying a gentle coolness.
The meadows along the lake were still slightly withered, yet they provided the perfect backdrop for the lake's beauty. Strolling along the lakeshore, the pebbles underfoot occasionally chirped softly. The distant Kula Kangri snow-capped peaks were clearly visible, their reflections shimmering on the lake's surface, creating a breathtaking "snow-capped mountains reflected in the lake" scene. There were no crowds, no vendors hawking their wares; only the occasional waterbird flying by and the rustling of prayer flags in the wind. Time seemed to slow down here, even breathing felt exceptionally light.
The most delightful surprise was encountering herds of livestock by the lake. Black yaks and white sheep grazed leisurely on the meadows, while wisps of smoke rose from Tibetan tents in the distance, creating a scene of pristine Tibetan life. I couldn't resist approaching and chatting with the herders. Their simple smiles and slightly broken Mandarin added a touch of warmth to the beautiful scenery.
The afternoon sun shone through the clouds onto the lake, its surface shimmering and displaying various shades of blue—light, dark, and turquoise—making every snapshot a masterpiece, requiring no filter. Looking down at the lake, the water was crystal clear, revealing the pebbles at the bottom. Its purity was breathtaking.
