Zhuge Eight-Diagrams Village

6.6

4.2/5

2.9k reviews

Zhuge Bagua village is located in Zhuge town, Lanxi city, Jinhua, Zhejiang province. It is a settlement of Zhuge Liang's descendants, with nearly 4,000 of them still living in the village today. Built by Zhuge Liang's descendants during the Yuan dynasty, the village follows a nine-palace and eight-trigrams layout: centered around Zhongchi pond, which is half water and half land resembling a taiji symbol, eight alleys extend outward to form the "inner eight trigrams," while eight surrounding hills form the "outer eight trigrams." The winding alleys are interconnected. [Cultural relics and honors] The village preserves over 200 ancient buildings from the Ming and Qing dynasties. In 1996, the residential buildings in Zhuge Eight-Diagrams Village and Changle Village were designated as national key cultural relics protection units by the State Council. The ancestor worship rituals of Zhuge descendants and the traditional residential construction techniques of Wuzhou (ancient village construction techniques of Zhuge Eight-Diagrams Village) were included in the national intangible cultural heritage list. Zhuge Eight-Diagrams Village is a national AAAA-level tourist attraction and one of the first national research and practice education bases for primary and secondary school students. In 2019, it was selected as one of the first national key rural tourism villages. [Main highlights] Prime minister ancestral hall (Zhuge clan ancestral hall, where spring sacrifices are held on the 14th day of the fourth lunar month and fall sacrifices on the 28th day of the eighth lunar month), Bell Pond, Dagong hall (memorial hall for Zhuge Liang), Tianyi hall and Dajing hall (exhibition of traditional Chinese medicine culture), Yongmu hall, and Shangtang ancient commercial street. [Recommended for] Travelers seeking less crowded cultural heritage sites with profound history can explore Ming and Qing dynasty architecture clusters, ancestral temple rituals, Zhuge family precepts, and intangible cultural heritage of ancestor worship. Visiting on a working day or shortly after opening offers a quieter experience. Families from Jiangsu, Zhejiang, or Shanghai traveling with elders can complete the main route in about half a day, taking shuttle buses to the core area with discounted tickets for seniors. For a culturally enriching family-friendly trip with children, learn about the Nine Palaces and Eight Trigrams layout, Zhuge family precepts, and traditional Chinese medicine culture. Weekend self-drive trips from Zhejiang (approximately 2 hours from Hangzhou) are convenient, with a parking lot available at the attraction. [Transportation] Self-drive: Approx. 2 hrs from Hangzhou. High-speed rail: Take the Jinhua-Jiande high-speed rail to Lanxi East Station (approx. 76 mins from Hangzhou West Station), then take a taxi or car rental to your destination. Free admission for reciting classics: Visitors aged 13 and under who recite "Admonitions to my son" within 2 minutes, or visitors over 13 who recite "Memorial on sending out the troops" within 8 minutes, can get free admission tickets. Excludes Labor Day, Mid-Autumn Festival, National Day, and Spring Festival holidays. See preferential policy for details.

1.2k reviews

The Underground River is located 8 km east of Lanxi and is also known as "Liudong Mountain". It is particularly famous for two attractions: The Underground River and Qixia Garden. In the attraction, an underground river over 1 km long runs through it, with water flowing year-round, and its source remains unknown to this day. Taking a boat ride along the underground river inside the karst cave is the unique feature and highlight of visiting the attraction. The cave sightseeing area can be explored either on foot or by boat. It's quite interesting to observe the surrounding stalactites hanging upside down from the boat. Moreover, the admission ticket already includes the boat fee, so it's worth giving it a try. The entire boat ride covers approx. 800 m. After disembarking, you can exit the cave via the stone steps, with many uniquely shaped stalactites to admire along the way. Not far from the attraction, the ancestral home of the renowned socialite Miss Zhao Si, Qixia Garden, is located in Dongyuan Village. This Qing Dynasty Huizhou-style brick-and-wood structure displays historical materials and stories about Miss Zhao Si and General Zhang Xueliang. If interested, you can visit.

The Shuanglong Cave Scenic Spot features a water-filled karst cave. The name Shuanglong, which translates to double dragon, comes from the stalactites resembling dragon heads that guard the entrance to the cave. The cave's outer entrance is warm in the winter and cool in summer. Visitors can gladly escape from the outside heat when visiting in the summer. To enter the cave's interior, visitors must lie down in a boat that travels through the stalactites. It's an exciting and unforgettable experience.

The resort boasts beautiful natural scenery, including over 3,000 acres of beautifully shaped, tranquil lakes, over 4,000 acres of pristine tea gardens, pure and natural wetlands, babbling brooks, fertile and picturesque ecological farmland, and lush natural forests. Daciyan Scenic Area

6.7

4.6/5

2.8k reviews

Daciyan Scenic Area is located 24 km south of Jiande. The mountain features a glittering double-sided Buddha statue, and the temple architecture halfway up the mountain is half embedded in the cliff and half suspended in the air, similar to the Hanging Temple of Mount Heng, earning it the nickname "Hanging Temple of Jiangnan". The attraction everywhere embodies the character "suspended"; plank roads, temples, and the giant Buddha are all built against steep cliffs. Although most of them have been rebuilt, they still make people marvel at the creativity of the ancients. Tour Route The scenic area features a roughly circular route. For visiting Daciyan Scenic Area, we recommend taking the cable car up the mountain and then walking downhill counterclockwise, which saves both time and energy. After ascending, there are still uphill and downhill mountain paths to navigate, with some exposed areas that can get quite sunny in summer. The main highlight is walking along the winding cliffside boardwalks to admire the mountain-embedded pathways, temples, Buddha statues, as well as the distant rolling green mountains and tiny towns below - creating truly spectacular views. Xuankong Plank Road From the foot of the mountain, you can see the glittering double-sided Buddha statue on the mountaintop from afar. After getting off the cable car, a short walk up the mountain leads to the suspended plank road. The plank road offers an excellent spot to photograph the panoramic view of the main buildings in Daci Cliffs Scenic Area, so don't miss it. After walking across the plank road, don't forget to turn back and take a close-up photo of it; the flying eaves and corridor pavilions clinging to the mountainside are also iconic views of Daciyan Scenic Area. Continue walking a bit further, and the natural standing Buddha is another unique feature here: from the side, the main peak of the entire Daciyan Scenic Area closely resembles a standing statue of Ksitigarbha Bodhisattva. Strange rocks, peculiar caves, and plants harmoniously form the facial features of the Great Buddha, and visitors invariably stop to admire it. Temple interior view Daciyan Scenic Area features two major highlights: the Two-Faced Buddha and the Ksitigarbha Hall. Visitors can walk along the plank path to see the Two-Faced Buddha up close or visit the Ksitigarbha Hall to pray for blessings. Behind the Heavenly Gate, cherry blossom trees are adorned with red ribbons tied by visitors, creating a serene Buddhist atmosphere. The statues in the Arhat Hall also showcase remarkable artistic expression. After visiting the Ksitigarbha Bodhisattva Hall in Daci Cliffs Scenic Area, exit the temple gate. On your right, there is a trail leading down the mountain (approx. 30 min). The trail is quite hidden; if you can't find it, you can ask the staff. The scenery along the downhill path is also beautiful, with a stream accompanying you. In October, when the ginkgo trees turn yellow, the view is even more charming. If you wish to take the cableway down, you will need to return to the upper cableway station via the same route. Additionally, Xinyue Ancient Village, the filming location for "Where Are We Going, Dad?" in 2014, is not far from Daciyan Scenic Area, so you can visit both. It's a great experience to see old houses, explore ancient villages, and try the "celebrity-style" amusement rides.

Lanxi Ancient City

4.3

4.1/5

85 reviews

The ancient city of Lanxi is in the shape of a half-moon, with Dayun Mountain in the east and Lanjiang River in the west. There used to be four gates: Anzheng Gate in the east, Mingde Gate in the south, Qingbo Gate in the west, and Gongchen Gate in the north. Northeast Water Gate, Longli Gate (Water Gate Pier) along the Yangtze River, Liujia Pier and Zhujia Pier were added in the Ming Dynasty. Due to the disaster of war and disrepair for a long time, most of the ancient city walls have been destroyed. The more than 600 meters of city walls that still exist along the river were rebuilt in the seventh year of Ming Zhengde (1512), and the rest were rebuilt in 1995. You can vaguely appreciate the unique features of the ancient city of Lanxi. West Gate Tower Lanxi Ancient City used to have three towers in the south, west and north, all of which were built in the seventh year of Zhengde in the Ming Dynasty (1512). During the Anti-Japanese War (1939), in order to prevent air raids and facilitate the evacuation of people, the south and north gate towers were demolished together with the east and south city walls, while the west gate tower was retained as a hanging bell because the west city wall along the river was not demolished as a flood protection bank. For alarm purposes. In 1985, the west gate tower collapsed. The existing West Gate Tower was rebuilt in 1995. The main building is on the 2nd floor, standing along the river, with a majestic momentum, which is a good place to board the Range Rover. The residential area in the area from Fuling Lane to Kite Lane to the south of Yan'an Road in the urban area still retains the style of the residential buildings in the Ming and Qing Dynasties. This residential community covers an area of about 3 hectares, with mountains and rivers, east-west layout, ups and downs, in harmony with the natural environment. Most of the planes are "three rooms, two rooms and one patio", generally on the second floor, with a wooden structure, gray tiles and white walls. The unique form of Lanxi dwellings has played a certain role in the development of Huizhou dwellings. Alleys In the late Qing Dynasty, Lanxi City had 21 large and small streets and 87 alleys. The alleys such as Tanhua and Zhongxi in the residential community to the south of Yan'an Road in the urban area still retain the characteristics of the streets and alleys of the Ming and Qing Dynasties. This kind of alley is narrow and long, which plays a certain role in fire protection. In order to strengthen the rigidity of the two gables, the two gables are connected by rammed walls. This is the innovation of the "lane" by the ancient craftsmen of Lanxi, which can be called a "masterpiece of architecture".

Danaye·Jinhua Mountain Little Iceland

5

3.9/5

20 reviews

Danaye·Jinhua Mountain Little Iceland is a cultural and tourism space in Jinhua Mountain transformed from an abandoned mine. It was once an old limestone mining area. After the lime factory ceased production, only steep, exposed gray-black rock walls and deep pits remained. It later became popular after the movie "The Southernmost Land" was filmed here. The giant wooden whaling ship built by the film crew is still stranded on the gravel beach by the lake, becoming a highly recognizable scene. Today, the gray-black rock walls surround a pool of clear, azure mine lake water. The pervasive mist and the black swans swimming on the lake make the entire valley look cold and empty, possessing the temperament of a Nordic wilderness, which is why it is called the "Little Iceland of Jiangnan." The craggy rock walls, the stranded whaling ship, the black stone beach by the lake, and land art installations such as "Wedding Under the Glacier Ruins" and "Lone Boat in the Mist" are all popular photo spots. A mine-themed bookstore is embedded under the rock wall, and the park is scattered with rock-style creative cafes and wilderness camping areas. The open mine water area has been transformed into a diving base where you can experience diving and other water activities. The temperature in the valley is lower than in the city all year round, making it especially cool in summer, suitable for taking photos, camping, and leisurely strolling. Wearing dark or solid-colored clothing creates a stronger contrast with the gray-black mountains, resulting in better photos.

What travellers say about Lanxi

狮舞天下23 October 2026

4.0

The village was settled by descendants of Zhuge Liang during the Five Dynasties and Ten Kingdoms period when they were appointed magistrates in Lanxi. Nestled deep in the mountains, the village was designed and built according to the Bagua (Eight Trigrams) principles, and is predominantly inhabited by people with the surname Zhuge. The quaint, traditional courtyard houses are very rustic and charming. Highly recommended. By the way, don't take the electric carts at the entrance of the scenic area; it's just a short walk, and there's absolutely no need to waste money.
