Marine World

Marine World Umi-no-nakamichi, located in Fukuoka City, Fukuoka Prefecture, opened in 1989 with the concept of being "an aquarium that adults can enjoy as well." This aquarium exhibits approximately 350 species and 30,000 marine creatures. It features a beautiful exterior reminiscent of a white shell. It has four floors above ground, a site area of 48,000㎡, and a total floor space of 21,400㎡. It is one of the top five aquariums in Japan. One of the most popular attractions at Marine World Umi-no-Nakamichi is the performance show featuring dolphins and sea lions. A wide variety of dolphins, including Pacific white-sided dolphins, bottlenose dolphins, and short-finned pilot whales, appear here and perform in perfect harmony with their trainers. The dolphins are particularly impressive when they jump across the pool or when the trainers perform tricks while riding on the dolphins' backs. In addition, at the end of the show, there is a unique element where the dolphins throw a ball towards the audience with their tails, making the audience feel even closer to the dolphins.Japan · Fukuoka

Ohori Park features a unique waterscape formed by its expansive lake, small islands scattered throughout, and the stone bridges that connect them. The lake was originally the moat of the Fukuoka Castle Ruins. The park opened in 1929, and the lake covers approx. half of the park's area. Nakanoshima Island is connected by several bridges, and the Ukimido Hall on the island is a representative view. The walking path around the lake is approx. 2 km long, making it suitable for walking, jogging, and cycling. Boat rental facilities are available by the lake, allowing visitors to enjoy the scenery of the lakeshore and islands from the water. In spring, cherry blossoms bloom along the lake, while in winter, water birds often stop by. The park also features a Japanese garden, the Fukuoka Art Museum, and a Noh theater. The Japanese garden showcases traditional styles with its pond, artificial hills, dry landscape (karesansui), and tea house, offering changing scenery throughout the seasons; the Fukuoka Art Museum houses works by artists such as Dalí, Miró, and Chagall, as well as a collection of ancient Japanese art; and the Noh theater is used for traditional performances such as Noh and Kyogen. In addition, the park has a children's play area, providing leisure space for visitors of all ages.Japan · Fukuoka

Hells of Beppu

4.3/5
432 reviews
Hells of Beppu is a famous hot spring in the Beppu area, and was chosen by the Japanese as the best hot spring in Western Japan. The most popular hot spring is the Eight Hells Hot Spring. The Eight Hells Hot Springs are: Sea Hell, Ghost Stone Fangzhou Hell, Mountain Hell, Stove Hell, Ghost Mountain Hell, White Pool Hell, Blood Pool Hell, and Tornado Hell. Sea Hell is the big one, and the distinctive one is Blood Pool Hell. It is famous for its "red hot spring", which is blood-red water that Japanese Buddhists believe to be a torrent from the underworld. "Blood Pond Ointment", made from the red clay of the blood pond, can treat athlete's foot and is popular in Japan. We also can't forget the Ghost Mountain Hell, also known as "Crocodile Hell". Currently, the crocodile farm in it is raising about 100 crocodiles of three kinds. During winter nights, keepers patrol every three hours to watch for crocodiles crawling out of the hot springs. Also surprising is the piranhas kept in the Wade White Pool Hell Garden, but what is fascinating is the "color-changing water", the water sprayed from the hot spring changes from colorless and transparent to blue-white when it falls into the pool..Hell is a name given to hot springs since ancient times, reserved locally to represent the long history of the hot spring town. The reason why hot springs are called "Hell" is that the place after a volcanic eruption is very similar to the landscape of Buddhist hell, because it is smokey and grass does not grow, so people are frightened. In Beppu, you can use hot spring water to make canned soft drinks, and use the free steam to cook rice directly. Locals use natural geothermal heat to make the famous steamed hell dish. The cooking method is very simple. Fresh seafood and vegetables are steamed in hot springs up to 100 ° C. Most of the nearby restaurants offer this. A kind of buffet. Kushida Shrine has been an important guardian shrine for the Hakata area since ancient times, and locals affectionately call it "Kushida-san." The shrine is closely linked to the Hakata Gion Yamakasa festival held every July, a tradition spanning hundreds of years that has been inscribed on the UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage list. The "Oiyama" race held on the early morning of July 15 is a key part of the festival, where teams carry Yamakasa floats weighing approx. 1 ton and run along a route of approx. 5 km, creating a vibrant atmosphere. The shrine grounds feature a permanent display of ornate decorative Yamakasa floats, standing over 10m tall, whose intricate decorations showcase traditional craftsmanship and serve as a representative view. Near the entrance stands the Kushida Ginkgo tree, said to be over 1,000 years old, with lush foliage that, together with the ancient shrine buildings, evokes a profound sense of history. In early spring, the Kawazu cherry blossoms on the grounds bloom, adding a soft spring touch to the shrine. Whether you are admiring traditional architecture, learning about Hakata customs, or experiencing local festival culture, this place showcases distinct regional characteristics.Japan · Fukuoka

I came here after watching Detective Conan. It feels like a small Dutch town, very relaxed, without the crowds of TDL/S or USJ, and you don't need to rush to any attractions. It's just nice to stroll around quietly. There are many hotels here, making it suitable for overnight stays. There's a light show at night, and if you're lucky, there's even a fireworks display.

One of my favorite parks placed in the city, Ohorikoen is quite massive, making it a good place for picnics, anytime strolls, jogging, and also has some swan boats for a fun ride in the lake during daytime. If you want to chill for a coffee there is Starbucks.

Kumamoto Castle is full of ingenuity. In my mind, the castle ruins are truly magnificent. Most astonishing are the piles of stones beneath the walls. They were rolled down during the Kumamoto earthquake. While progress is slow, they will one day be rebuilt.

Having previously visited Iceland, I found the Hells of Beppu quite underwhelming. It had more of a theme park vibe rather than natural beauty. We bought the combined ticket to visit all 7 hells and out of all of them, for me, only Umi Jigoku was wow. I was most disappointed with they geyser at Tatsumaki Jigoku (tornado hell). The top of it has a stone mantle so it doesn’t shoot up very high. The entrance price is very reasonable and savings to be had when buying the combined ticket. You need cash to buy any snacks or drinks in the hells (no suica or other cards accepted). I can recommend the steamed sweet potato cakes and the sweet potato ice cream. We visited ourselves by local bus (very easy) rather than a tour but found the directions for some of the hells not very clear or obvious. There were also free hot spring foot baths in a couple of the hells which was lovely after a lot of walking. An interesting place to visit but not what I expected based on articles I’d read beforehand.

This place is truly worth visiting repeatedly; each visit offers a different experience. The scenery changes with the seasons, so there's always a surprise no matter when you come. The overall pace is leisurely, perfect for letting go of all the hustle and bustle and slowly appreciating the beauty around you. The local atmosphere is vibrant, and you can feel the unique warmth and life of the place. After coming here, I realized that the best scenery isn't about crowded hotspots, but rather this kind of comforting and reassuring atmosphere. Highly recommended!

Kushida Shrine is a must-visit shrine when you come to Hakata. You must come to see the Gion Yamakasa. Although I didn't come in July, I didn't see the big Yamakasa in the city, but I can see the Yamakasa in Kushida Shrine. Read the introduction According to the legend of the shrine, Kushida Shrine was founded in the first year of Tenpyo Hoji (757) and has been the general guardian of Hakata since ancient times. The Hakata Festival is a representative festival of Fukuoka City and is well-known throughout the country.
