Things to do in Gothenburg

No. 1 of Best Things to Do in Gothenburg

Goteborg Opera

Goteborg Opera is located on the banks of the Göta Älv river in the Lilla Bommen harbor area of Gothenburg. The building's design draws inspiration from its harbor surroundings, incorporating imagery of ship hulls, sails, bridges, and shore cranes into its silhouette. Viewed from the river, its bold lines resemble a giant ship moored at the dock. The auditorium features a classical layout, with the orchestra stalls and multi-level balconies enclosing the space. The orchestra pit can accommodate a hundred-piece orchestra. The stage equipment is equally sophisticated, with multiple movable platforms and a revolving stage working in tandem, allowing entire sets to be quickly switched between reserved areas. This enables operas, ballets, musicals, and concerts to be performed in rotation within the same theater. In addition to the main stage, the venue also houses a more intimate small stage, perfect for up-close performances. During the day, consider walking along the riverfront promenade to take in the full silhouette of this "giant ship." After dark, the building lights up, and looking back from the opposite bank, it becomes a highly recognizable feature of Gothenburg's waterfront nightscape.

Gustaf Adolf's Square

Gustaf Adolf's Square is located on the banks of the main canal in the center of Gothenburg and has been the city's political hub since the 17th century. In its center stands a bronze statue of the city's founder, King Gustav II Adolf of Sweden. The king points to the ground with his right hand, his gaze fixed on the distance. It is surrounded by historic buildings such as the Old Town Hall and the Stock Exchange building. The Old Town Hall is considered a classic example of early functionalist architecture, while the Stock Exchange building with its neat arcades is a mid-19th-century neoclassical work. If you look down, you can see a map of Gothenburg embedded in the ground, where you can discern the city's early layout. The Stora Hamnkanalen canal runs through the city on one side, where sightseeing boats often carry tourists under the bridges. The area is also adjacent to large shopping centers and a tram hub.

Feskekorka

Feskekorka is located along the Rosenlund Canal in the heart of Gothenburg and was designed by city architect Victor von Gegerfelt. Its pointed arched windows, steep roof, and small spires on the gables draw inspiration from Nordic stave churches and Neo-Gothic architecture. Beneath the yellow brick exterior lies an exposed wooden framework, making it look like a church standing by the water from a distance. Since its renovation and reopening, it has been upgraded from a traditional fish market to a food hall that integrates seafood counters, restaurants, and bars. The Flåtens Fiskhandel counter is stocked with the day's catch, including cod, mackerel, halibut, as well as lobster, oysters, and fresh shrimp. The deli counter, Ebbes Fångst, specializes in fresh shrimp, smoked shrimp, crayfish, caviar, and cured/smoked salmon. A West Coast-style shrimp salad with bread is a classic local way to enjoy it. Several restaurants inside each have their own specialties, and some even offer a view overlooking the entire hall. Even if you don't eat seafood, the building itself is worth a special visit. The church-like pointed windows, wooden roof, and its reflection on the canal water are all great subjects for photos in the city center. After exploring, you might want to take a walk along the canal or take your selected seafood to enjoy by the water. During weekday lunch hours, locals come and go, making it a great place to experience the local atmosphere.
