Our guide, Yoshitani, was very friendly! Unfortunately, it coincided with the "mountain scorching" (wildfire) of Mount Aso, a traditional event held annually in February and March in the Aso region of Kumamoto Prefecture. The aim is to maintain the vast grassland landscape, prevent deforestation, and prepare for new grass growth in spring by burning dry grass. Everything was a dark, smoky black. We'll have to come back another day!★

It's a JR pass - you get it and you use it, everything as advertised. Saves a significant sum if you ride the trains a lot, which you probably will in Kyushu.Trip.com Picks
