Things to do in Chiang Mai

Chiang Mai, tucked into the forested mountains of northern Thailand, is a former Lanna kingdom capital. With ancient temples, misty hills, and artisan villages, Chiang Mai offers a peaceful contrast to the bustle of Bangkok. Chiang Mai weather varies by season, with the cool, dry months from November to February being ideal for outdoor adventures and temple visits. Top things to do in Chiang Mai include exploring the Old City, visiting mountaintop Doi Suthep, and wandering Chiang Mai night markets, where food, crafts, and local charm come together every evening. One highlight is the city shines during the Chiang Mai Lantern Festival, when thousands of glowing lanterns float into the night sky—a truly magical sight.

Reviews: Chiang Mai Sticky Waterfall half-day tour [optional Chiang Mai Blue Temple/Tiger Kingdom]

The tour only includes transportation; everything else is self-service due to the distance. You'll need to plan your own activities and activities once you arrive. There's no guide; you're on your own. To take photos with the elephants, you'll need to buy small bananas (100 taels each) to feed them. Meals are also served to the elephants and are at your own expense.

Great trip at a fantastic price. Well organized. Don't forget your jacket, it's cold in the mountains.

An excellent tour! Our attentive guide, New, accompanied the group with care and attention, providing all the necessary information. The time spent on the grounds was perfectly timed to allow for a stroll and exploration of each temple. The organization was excellent.

The pick-up point was easy to find. We shared the bus experience with 8 other wonderful people, foreigners from Korea and Mongolia. The guide was wonderful, a very nice, qualified person. She was very organized and managed our time and stays well. Even though it was 8 hours, it felt like 4. The waterfalls are wonderful, the mountains and the forest extraordinary! Everything was superb! A wonderful choice! Definitely, I recommend and I would come back!

The trip is as described. I enjoyed the whole experience and there was plenty of time for sightseeing and taking photos although you will spend a lot of time in the van. Tiring but wonderful.
Reviews: CHIANG RAI Red, White and Blue Temple Full Day Tour from Chiang Mai

It was a fantastic experience. I specifically chose an English-speaking guided tour just to practice my listening skills. We boarded the bus at 7 am and were dropped off at 8 pm, a full 13 hours of travel. Exhaustion was inevitable, but compared to the driver, we were very relaxed and comfortable. We didn't visit the Long Neck Karen village (we were a little scared). The hot spring was small but impressive; the 91-degree boiling water was intimidating. We didn't try the hot spring eggs; 20 baht for 3 eggs was a bit too much for us, so we decided against it. The White Temple, Blue Temple, and Red Temple are definitely worth seeing. We had plenty of time and took fewer photos, so we felt we had enough time to see everything we wanted. Since it was midday, it was difficult to find suitable lighting, and there were too many people, so the photos are only so-so. They would be perfect for photos in the softer light of early morning or late afternoon; we'll have to stay in Chiang Rai next time to achieve that.
