▲ The Lion Monument is a famous memorial sculpture located in Lucerne, Switzerland. Designed by Danish sculptor Bertel Thorvaldsen, it was carved into natural rock in 1821. It commemorates the Swiss mercenaries who died defending the Tuileries Palace during the French Revolution in 1792. The sculpture depicts a severely wounded lion lying in agony, its right paw resting on a shield bearing the French royal emblem, alongside a Swiss cross shield. Above it is inscribed Latin text, praised by Mark Twain as "the most mournful and moving piece of stone in the world."
