Fuxian Lake

4.6/5
166 reviews
Fuxian Lake is located between Chengjiang, Jiangchuan District, and Huaning County in Yuxi, Yunnan. As most of the lake lies within Chengjiang, locals also call it "Chengjiang Sea." Accessible by a roughly one-hour drive from Kunming, it is a popular lakeside getaway in central Yunnan. Covering over 200 square km, it ranks as Yunnan's third-largest lake by area after Dianchi and Erhai, but its fame stems from its depth and water volume: with depths exceeding 150 m and a storage capacity of approx. 20 billion cubic meters, it dwarfs Dianchi and Erhai combined. The lake's crystal-clear azure waters boast transparency of up to 7–8 m, inspiring ancient descriptions like "10,000 acres of glazed glass." Highlights cluster along the western and northern shores. On the west, the Luchong scenic area nestles between mountains and the lake. A short climb up Bijia Hill rewards visitors with panoramic views, while ancient banyan trees shade its base. Here, traditional waterwheel fishing persists—locals channel lake water into ditches to catch the endemic kanglang fish. Further south, Mingxing Fish Cave's shallow, clear waters make it a hotspot for sailing boats and kayaking. The northern and eastern shores offer more photogenic scenes: coconut-fringed beaches at Moon Bay Wetland Park, red sand beaches on the Chengjiang side, the cherry blossom-lined Time Trail at Yinghua Valley, and flower fields at Fuhai Bay Wetland Park are all popular photo spots. At the lake's southwestern tip, Yudai River connects to neighboring Xingyun Lake, where the Jieyu Stone creates the curious phenomenon of "two lakes meeting, fish never crossing"—fish from each lake turn back at the stone. Divers have discovered mysterious stone structures on the lakebed, adding to its allure. The nearly 100-km ring road around the lake is ideal for self-drive or cycling tours, with mountain and lake views at every turn. Frequent stops for photos are encouraged, though holiday traffic can be heavy, so allow ample time. Lakeside restaurants serve must-try dishes like copper-pot fish and potato rice, with the tender, small-boned kanglang fish being a local delicacy. In winter, red-billed gulls overwinter here, and the soft morning and evening light creates perfect conditions for sunrise and sunset photography. For natural history enthusiasts, the nearby Maotianshan area on the north shore has yielded abundant Cambrian fossils dating back over 500 million years, worth a detour.Chengjiang · 17.6km from downtown

The Chengjiang Fossil Land Natural Museum is a natural science museum themed around the Cambrian Explosion. Built upon the UNESCO World Heritage Site "Chengjiang Fossil Site," it combines geological relics with scientific research to present visitors with brilliant chapters from Earth's evolutionary history. The Chengjiang Fossil Land Natural Museum showcases the 530-million-year-old Chengjiang biota fossils as its centerpiece. The museum features multiple themed exhibition halls that progressively explore geological formations, fossil specimens, and the evolution of life. Visitors can observe well-preserved ancient fossils like trilobites and Anomalocaris up close, enhanced by dynamic projections and scene reconstructions that bring these ancient marine creatures to life. A specially designed interactive "Tree of Life" installation visually demonstrates species differentiation, making it perfect for families to explore together. Beyond static exhibits, the museum has designed immersive experiences: visitors can transform into "paleontologists" and enjoy simulated fossil excavation with professional tools in the dig zone, or observe intricate details of microfossils through microscopes to experience the rigor and fun of scientific research. The museum building itself also features clever design—its facade draws inspiration from rock strata textures, creating harmony with the surrounding karst landscape. Leaving the exhibition hall, visitors can follow the trail to the fossil site preservation area to discover traces of time in authentic geological formations. The museum is located near Fuxian Lake, where a post-visit lakeside stroll blends the story of ancient life with the breathtaking scenery of blue waters and skies, adding a harmonious blend of nature and culture to your journey. This place is not just a treasure trove of knowledge for science enthusiasts, but also a key for all visitors to unlock the mysteries of Earth's life.Chengjiang · 7.9km from downtown

Pink Beach is a stretch of lakeshore naturally shaped by red landforms. The sand here is rich in iron oxide, presenting varying shades of pink under the sunlight, stretching for hundreds of meters into the clear, deep blue lake water. Metasequoia trees grow along the lakeshore, lush and green in spring and summer, and gradually turning red and yellow in late fall, contrasting with the pink sandy shore. This beach gained attention due to photos spreading on the Internet, attracting mostly visitors who come specifically to take photos. The colors are more distinct when there is plenty of sunlight on clear days, and the pink of the beach is particularly rich under the slanting rays of the sunset in the evening. Viewed from above, the Pink Beach, the deep blue lake surface, and the colorful metasequoia trees are framed together, creating a more complete composition.Chengjiang · 8.9km from downtown

Haiyan Village

Haiyan Village is an ancient fishing village with a history of over 600 years, dating back to the Ming Dynasty. For generations, the ancestors lived by the water and made their living by fishing. It was once a busy pier on the shipping route of Dianchi Lake. Today, the bluestone alleys still wind through the village, and clusters of old Ming and Qing Dynasty earth-based houses retain the "Yi Ke Yin" courtyard and the "three-room and one-screen-wall" architectural style typical of central Yunnan. The mottled rammed-earth walls, carved door lintels, and wooden window lattices reveal the unique character of the old fishing village. Watching the sunset over Dianchi Lake is a signature experience here. In the evening, the old pier and the mudflats by the lake become ready-made viewing platforms. The setting sun dyes the lake surface orange-red, leaving only a silhouette of the Western Hills across the water. Many people come specifically for this "orange sea." In winter, black-headed gulls arrive as scheduled, skimming over the water in flocks and sometimes landing on the viewing platform railings to interact with visitors. In summer, lotus flowers planted by villagers float on the lake, and egrets occasionally skim the shoreline. Walking or cycling along the Dianchi Lake greenway allows you to connect the entire stretch of lakeshore scenery and enjoy it at a leisurely pace.Kunming · 20.5km from Chengjiang

Fuxian Lake is very large, with a circumference of more than 70 kilometers. It is recommended to go to the Red Beach to see seagulls. The water quality of Luchong Scenic Area is crystal clear, and there are several good places to take pictures. Moon Bay is too small and the scenery is average.

This is a scenic spot in the northwest corner of Fuxian Lake, and also one of the must-visit spots for taking photos. The shore is covered with red sand, which I heard was transported there. There are many seagulls, making it not only a great place for taking pictures but also a good place to bring children to play. When the weather is bad, the scenery is not particularly special, and in winter, it can be very windy, so be sure to dress warmly.

Location: Haigeng Park/No. 16 Hubin Road ↔ Xishan Longmen (West Mountain Dragon Gate), not near the old street, you have to go to the Dianchi Lake area. Experience: Crossing the lake + climbing the mountain, about 20 minutes one way, views of Dianchi Lake, Sleeping Beauty Mountain, and city scenery, great for taking photos. Ticket Price: One way about 59-60 RMB, round trip about 98-100 RMB. Advantages: Easy for lazy people to climb West Mountain, no climbing required, unique views; seagulls in winter. Disadvantages: Stops during strong winds/thunderstorms; long queues during peak season; separate ticket/walking required for Longmen after climbing the mountain; don't confuse with the "Xishan Longmen Cableway". Conclusion: First time in Kunming, taking the Dianchi-Xishan route → worth it; if just exploring the old street → not worth a special trip.

The air was filled with the refreshing fragrance of flowers and grass, invigorating the mind and spirit. Here, you can leave your worries behind and experience the beauty and mystery of nature!

On a cloudy day, Fuxian Lake was occasionally pierced by sparse rays of sunlight. The hazy blue water was gentle and soft, like a milky lake, with a clean and ethereal quality reminiscent of Lake Tekapo.

I passed by here several times when I came to the Chengjiang Fossil Museum (I have written notes introducing the museum, you can check it out), but it was closed every time due to the epidemic. This time it is finally open, and the long-awaited circus theater also opened, so I rushed there as soon as it opened!

I came specifically to ride the transparent boats, and after comparing it with Haihong Wetland Park, I chose Laoyuhe Wetland Park. Due to time constraints, I only managed to ride one transparent boat, but the experience was still quite good. Next time, I'd like to allocate more time to explore the park.

Haiyan Village, a fishing village with over 600 years of history on the shores of Dianchi Lake in Kunming, has recently become a popular tourist destination due to its magnificent "most beautiful sunset over Dianchi Lake." ### Highlights and Features * **Core Attraction:** The most beautiful sunset over Dianchi Lake. Enjoy the breathtaking view of the sun sinking into the lake and the sky turning orange-red, reminiscent of an oil painting, from the old wharf site. * **Cultural Heritage:** The village preserves Qing Dynasty "one-seal" style residences, bluestone roads, and a herringbone-shaped street layout, allowing visitors to experience the charm of an ancient fishing village. * **Emerging Businesses:** Cafes converted from old houses, boutique guesthouses (such as Shan Yin Zhu), cultural and creative markets, and specialty restaurants enrich the experience. * **Ecological Experience:** Visitors can get up close to feeding red-billed gulls (from winter to early spring), and enjoy natural landscapes such as the Laoyu River Wetland nearby. ### Travel Tips and Precautions * **Best Time:** Evenings on clear days. It is recommended to check the sunset time in advance and arrive early to secure a good spot. * **Cost:** Free entry to the village. * **Suggested Duration:** 2-3 hours, which can be extended if meals or overnight stays are planned. * **Transportation:** Approximately a 1-hour drive from Kunming city center. Driving or taking a taxi is recommended; public transportation may be inconvenient. * **Tourism Flow:** High tourist volume at sunset and on holidays (e.g., up to 200,000 visitors per day during the Spring Festival). * **Facilities:** Tourism development is relatively mature, with restaurants, cafes, guesthouses, and parking. Some areas are still undergoing ecological restoration. ### 📌 Recommended Nearby Attractions Along the Dianchi Lake where Haiyan Village is located, there are many villages with diverse styles that can be visited together: * **Duqu Village:** Featuring over a hundred **nostalgic-themed comic murals** created by artists, full of artistic atmosphere. * **Shicheng Village:** Famous for its "stone culture" and "food city," where you can taste local delicacies such as Dianwang Lao Jiang Yu (Dianwang Old Sauce Fish). * **Niulian Fishing Village**: A newly emerging art village with **white sand beaches** and charming architecture, perfect for taking photos. ### 💎 Summary: Haiyan Village is suitable for tourists seeking romantic sunsets, enjoying photography, and wanting to experience the charm of an old fishing village combined with a vibrant artistic atmosphere. If you prefer absolute tranquility or in-depth historical and cultural exploration, it might be a bit noisy. If you would like to know more about travel details during specific seasons (such as red-billed gull season), or have more specific requirements for certain types of characteristic guesthouses, I can provide you with more detailed information.
