Over approx. 200 years, it has expanded into the current arcade street that stretches over 1 km and is only a few meters wide. The arcades, a blend of Chinese and Western styles, are connected house by house, earning it the reputation of a modern architectural yearbook. This old street is worth slowing down to examine the facades: on the white-toned walls, parapets, European-style arched windows, balconies, pediments, and insect and bird reliefs are connected layer by layer, like a sculpture gallery suspended in mid-air; in the past, shops were on the ground floor and residences were upstairs, with pedestrians walking under the arcades to shelter from the sun and rain, which is the classic experience of a Lingnan arcade street. The old town is also dotted with modern historical sites such as the former site of the Customs Building, the former site of the Great Qing Post Office, and the former site of the Telegraph Office.
