Edinburgh Castle

4.7/5
2.9k reviews
Edinburgh Castle stands majestically on the volcanic cliffs above the Royal Mile, guarding Scotland for centuries—it once served as a royal residence, military fortress, and prison. Today, you can stand at the exact spot where the One O'Clock Gun fires, stroll through St. Margaret's Chapel, and explore the National War Museum on the west side, which showcases centuries of Scottish military history through uniforms, medals, and weapons, alongside the Crown Jewels displayed beside the Stone of Destiny. The castle esplanade echoes with the sound of bagpipes, the Crown's history predates the Act of Union, and the breathtaking views of the Firth of Forth stretch out before you. This historic British landmark still commands awe from people across the island.United Kingdom · Edinburgh

The Palace of Holyroodhouse is located at the end of the Royal Mile in Edinburgh and serves as the official residence of His Majesty the King of Scotland, used for state ceremonies and official entertainment. This palace has been a royal residence for over 500 years and is deeply intertwined with Scotland's rich history. A visit to the palace includes the historic apartments of Mary, Queen of Scots, where many dramatic events occurred during her brief and tumultuous reign, including the brutal murder of her Italian secretary David Rizzio by her husband Lord Darnley. In the palace's State Apartments, visitors can admire the magnificent Great Gallery, where grand balls were held in September 1745 when Bonnie Prince Charlie established his Jacobite court at the palace. Today's State Apartments reflect the evolving tastes of successive monarchs, renowned for their exquisite plaster ceilings and an unparalleled collection of Brussels tapestries. They house a significant portion of the Royal Collection's artworks, many of which have long-standing connections to the Palace of Holyroodhouse and Scotland. A visit to the palace also includes the opportunity to explore the ruins of Holyrood Abbey and the palace's unique gardens, set against the backdrop of Arthur's Seat. Crumlin Road Prison is a special attraction. This prison has been well refurbished. Here, visitors can visit the cursed cell, interrogation room, solitary cell, execution room, etc. The scenes inside are vividly restored, It makes people feel the atmosphere of the prison at that time. The furnishings in the prison are somewhat creepy, but it is also a rare experience. Worth a visit if you want to learn about the history of the prison and Belfast.Belfast · 35.9km from Banbridge

The "Peace Wall" on the Peace Line in the west of Belfast was built to separate Catholic and Protestant residential areas and reduce conflicts between paramilitary organizations on both sides. The first section of the Peace Wall was built in 1974. The wall was specially fortified in the summer of 2003, on the eve of a traditional Protestant parade to celebrate the historic defeat of King William III by the Irish army. Now, it has become a tourist attraction in the city, where people come to pay homage to the past and sigh the preciousness of peace.Belfast · 34.6km from Banbridge
Hillsborough Castle and Gardens

Hillsborough Castle and Gardens

3.1
Hillsborough Castle has been a grand family home and is now the official home of the Secretary of State for Northern Ireland, and a royal residence. Members of the Royal Family stay at Hillsborough when visiting Northern Ireland. Viewed by some as a politically neutral venue, Hillsborough has played an important role in the Peace Process in Northern Ireland since the 1980s. In 2014, Historic Royal Palaces took over the running of Hillsborough Castle and Gardens and began an ambitious project to restore the house and gardens to its former glory.   Hillsborough is a late-18th century Irish Big House rather than a castle. It was very common for the rich, predominantly Anglo-Irish upper classes to call their grand country houses ‘castles', as this reinforced the antiquity of their families. In this case the name refers back to the original ‘fort', which was the first home of the successful Hill family who gave the town its name. The grand Big House of Hillsborough replaced this earlier fortified home, which we now call The Fort.Hillsborough · 19.1km from Banbridge

Calton Hill

7.1
4.6/5
516 reviews
Calton Hill is a high vantage point overlooking the entire city of Edinburgh, dotted with several neoclassical memorial buildings. Take a walk along the summit trail, and from the top, looking west, you can take in the entire cityscape, with the magnificent Edinburgh Castle standing in the distance, the vast waters of the Firth of Forth visible to the north, and buildings such as the Scottish Parliament Building and the Palace of Holyroodhouse to the south. A prominent feature on the summit is the National Monument of Scotland, built to commemorate those who died in the Napoleonic Wars. It was left unfinished due to a lack of funds, and today only a row of massive columns supporting a beam remains. The nearby Nelson Monument was built in the early 19th century and features a time ball on top, which drops promptly every afternoon. It was originally a signaling device set up to calibrate time for ships in the Port of Leith. Not far away is the Dugald Stewart Monument, with several stone columns supporting a circular dome. Its elegant design makes it a classic foreground for photographing the Edinburgh skyline.United Kingdom · Edinburgh

The Giant's Causeway is located on a headland on the edge of the Antrim Plain in Northern Ireland, about 3 kilometers from Bushmere. Forest. It is an unmissable natural wonder in Northern Ireland and was listed as a World Natural Heritage by UNESCO in 1986. According to legend, the formation of the Stone Pillar Forest "The Giant's Causeway" originated from the war between giants, and some people say that the "Giant's Causeway" comes from the footprints left by the giants chasing their lovers. According to the conclusion of scientific research conducted by geologists over the years, the structure of these stone pillars was formed by the continuous eruption of active volcanoes in the Tertiary period. . A splendid picture that merges with the sea Now, you can walk along the magnificent Giant's Causeway and get a close look at it. Walking on this magical embankment and looking out at the sea is definitely a treat. The locals put coins into the rocks, which are said to bring good luck, so give it a try. The visitor center is located on the hill uphill from the scenic bus station. It is the visitor center of the Giant's Causeway. You can get the guide book and Chinese audio guide here. The magnificent castle embodies the history, culture, and glory of Scotland. The visitor pathways and signage were well-organized, and there was even an audio guide in Mandarin, which allowed tourists like us who don't speak English to gain a deeper understanding of the castle. The staff at the visitor center were warm and attentive, and the police officers in the square outside the castle were friendly and responsible, helping me find my lost wife.

Visiting the Palace of Holyroodhouse was easily one of the highlights of my time in Edinburgh. Located right at the end of the Royal Mile, it offers a fascinating contrast to the medieval drama of Edinburgh Castle, providing a much more intimate glimpse into British and Scottish royal history.

The price is cheaper if you order on-site, so I suggest you don't order online. Besides, they can't scan the QR code for online orders. On-site, it's only 14 pounds for adults, but they're charging 156 pounds here, which is outrageous.

The Peace Bridge is a beautiful landscape in Belfast. It represents a very sad history and also represents the hope of the people of Northern Ireland. The walls are covered with various graffiti works, most of which are paintings expressing peace in Northern Ireland. Some of the graffiti works are very moving and worth appreciating.

Windermere is such a beautiful place to visit, surrounded by peaceful scenery and incredible views. Walking near the lake was especially relaxing, and there are plenty of lovely spots to stop and enjoy the landscape. I’d recommend taking a boat trip if you have time, as it gives you a completely different view of the area. A wonderful destination for a relaxing day in the Lake District. 🌿⛵🏞️
