Not far south of the town, the Marengo Reefs Marine Sanctuary is very close to the shore. At low tide, tide pools are exposed among the reefs, where small creatures like starfish and crabs are clearly visible. Groups of Australian fur seals can often be seen sunbathing on the near-shore rocks year-round, and you can also take a kayak out for close-up snorkeling. Behind the town, in the Great Otway National Park, you'll find the Maits Rest Rainforest Walk, which is built over a gully of tree ferns, where you can often spot wild koalas in the eucalyptus forest.
