Yuelu College, founded in 976 AD, formerly known as Hunan Higher School, was reorganized by Yuelu College in 1903, named Hunan Provincial Hunan University in 1926, and became the 15th National University of the National Government in 1937. In 1950, Mao Zedong wrote the name of the school. In 1953, the national department was renamed the Central South Civil Architecture College, and in 1959 the name of Hunan University was restored. In 2000, Hunan University was merged with Hunan University of Finance and Economics and formed into a new Hunan University.
