On my trip to the Australian outback this time, I specifically came to admire the spectacular Uluru (Ayers Rock) and intentionally chose to stay in the Yulara area for a few days. The Southern Hemisphere is currently heading into winter, which is actually the most comfortable time to visit Uluru. The sun is super bright during the day, but it gets a bit chilly in the mornings and evenings, resulting in a massive temperature drop. Accommodation options near Uluru are fairly limited and mostly on the pricey side. If you want to kick back and experience nature without blowing your budget, the Outback Lodge, where I stayed this time, is a highly recommended option. Outback Lodge operates like a youth hostel with a super down-to-earth vibe and a very international crowd. The property is located right next to parts of the resort. The biggest surprise is its massive outdoor communal area—complete with a large swimming pool, though it's probably best saved for the summer months~ Additionally, the lodge has several lookout points. Whether you're chasing the sunrise in the morning or catching the sunset in the evening, the colors reflecting off the giant red rock from different angles are absolutely mind-blowing—you can never have enough camera memory for this! From here, you can also take in the spectacular surrounding desert landscape, and it's an incredible spot for stargazing at night! 😍 Every evening, the space outside the communal area transforms into a DIY barbecue zone, though the BBQ does cost a little extra. Honestly, though, sitting outdoors, chilling with some steak, and listening to live music creates a wild, vibrant atmosphere that you just can't find in the city! Facility-wise, they offer a shared kitchen and bathrooms. It's absolutely perfect for backpackers or anyone on a budget. The washrooms are spotless and thoughtfully equipped with things like hair dryers. ✌🏻 Travel Tips You absolutely must buy your national park pass online in advance before coming to Uluru, or you won't be able to access the designated areas. Since it's an inland desert climate, the temperature difference between day and night is insane. Packing a down jacket or a thick coat is a must! The midday sun is incredibly intense. Remember to pack plenty of water, slather on that sunscreen, and wear a hat and sunglasses. The starry skies here at night are gorgeous. Finding a spot free of light pollution to chill, gaze at the Milky Way, and snap some photos is just top-tier. I recommend claiming a good spot by the pool early or heading up to the lookout point to soak in the natural beauty in peace. Hotel Name: Outback Lodge Booking Tips: It's highly recommended to book well in advance during the peak season (April to October). Some room types might also have a minimum night stay requirement. Travel Advice: The national park is at its absolute best during the daily sunrise and sunset. At Uluru, I rented a car from Ayers Rock Airport 🚙 There is a free shuttle bus to and from the resort, but other than that, you can only take a tour bus or a rental car 💸 . As the name suggests, Fun Over Fifties was absolutely “brilliant.” From the accommodation, food, tours, guiding, to the wonderful people on the trip, everything was well-organized. The price covered everything except two meals and alcoholic beverages, with no other hidden costs. FOF even provided some extra treats like drinks and ice cream at various sites. When rain at Uluṟu forced the cancellation of the Sounds of Silence dinner, our exceptional tour hostess Annette arranged the “Wintjiri Wiru” experience as an alternative, ensuring we still had a great time. The rain also caused low clouds during our scheduled helicopter flights over Uluṟu and the Olges. Impressively, Annette managed to rebook our flight for the following day before our departure, and refunds were given to those who couldn’t reschedule due to earlier flights. While it was disappointing for some, weather is beyond control. We were fortunate to witness the outback in full bloom, a rare sight that typically occurs only every 10 years. Suzanne and I highly recommend this tour to anyone interested in Australia’s history but wanting to avoid the hassle of driving. This was our second trip with FOF, following our first from Darwin to Broome, and once again, it was “brilliant.”

Uluru is one of the world's largest monoliths, located in Uluru-Kata Tjuta National Park in the Northern Territory, almost in the center of the Australian continent. It was once widely known as "Ayers Rock," but now, respecting its value as a sacred site for the Indigenous people, it is officially called Uluru! Uluru is a massive sandstone formation, approximately 348 meters high and 9.4 kilometers in circumference ✨. Its appearance has earned it the nickname "the navel of the earth" 😳. To get to Uluru, you can fly ✈️ or drive 🚗 from within Australia. However, driving takes over 20 hours, so flying is recommended! There's a free bus from the airport to hotels in the town! Uluru has one town, and there are about five hotels clustered there, so staying in one of those hotels is convenient. This trip to Uluru lasted three days and two nights. I booked the hotel, The Lost Camel, through Trip.com, and then joined a sunset camel ride and a sunrise tour to see Uluru. 📅 Travel Itinerary Day 1: Japan → Sydney! I slept so soundly on the plane 😴 Day 2: Dinner at the Grounds of the City. The chiffon cake was sold out, but the tiramisu I had instead was delicious! Checked the time on QVB and strolled to the Opera House! The Harbour Bridge was also beautiful! 🌉 Eating Aussie beef at night and strolling around the harbour, it was a truly satisfying day 😌 My friend's guide was amazing 🫶 Day 3: Departed for Uluru. Sounds of Silence was a sunset, stargazing, and dinner tour 🌆 The sunset while sipping champagne was just blissful 🥂 For dinner, we enjoyed an all-you-can-eat buffet featuring salads, meats like kangaroo and lamb, and desserts including cake 🍖🥗 As it got dark, we turned off all the lights and it was pitch black. Time for stargazing. They taught us about the Milky Way and the Southern Cross, and it was like a starry sky I'd never seen before! 🌌 Flashlights were prohibited, so it was a shame we couldn't take photos of the food or anything else. 😢 From the PR video, I thought we'd have to wear shirts or something, but everyone was just casually dressed in T-shirts and it was fine. ☺︎ Day 4: We took a camel sunset tour. 🐪🌄 We saw Uluru and Kata Tjuta, and afterward they gave us bread and coffee! The bread was hard and traditional? ? There were signs like 🐐 and baby 🐪 all around, so it felt like a zoo. Back at the lodging, we prepared to explore Uluru! We only had about three hours, but we walked faster than the guidebook suggested, so we walked three courses, which was longer than expected, and got a good look at the cultural center! It was so much fun seeing new things like rock paintings, plants, and nests. For dinner, we had a BBQ at the Outback Hotel! 🍖 We had emu, camel, and kangaroo sausages, as well as buffalo meat! It felt strange. Day 5: After breakfast, I had a buffet and walked to a nearby observation deck for my final look at Uluru. 🥲 It was amazing. There was a shuttle bus two hours before my flight, and I took it to the airport. There was a souvenir shop and a small cafe, and the history of Uluru was posted on the wall. 🇦🇺 I returned to Sydney, and since I had about two hours until my next flight, I took the train to a nearby supermarket! I used cash, bought some souvenirs, and returned to the airport. After security, I continued shopping for souvenirs. Day 6: Arrived in Japan early in the morning. Time flew by!
