We borrowed bikes from the hotel and rode around 20km each day, seeing quiet slices of local life along the river. 📍 Shanghai Greenhouse Garden|上海温室花园 An immersive botanical space inside Shanghai Expo Culture Park, filled with different climates, textures, plants and beautifully curated rooms. 📍 The Bund Puyan Hotel Skyline|上海外滩璞硯酒店天际线景观 One of the most unforgettable skyline views, from sunrise to sunset and into the evening. 📍 Yu Health|裕和堂 The best bodywork treatment I have ever received: deep foot reflexology followed by full-body cupping. We left feeling completely restored. 📍 Qibao Temple|七宝教寺 A very special stop where we met Hansen, who made us herbal medicine bags and shared Chinese medicine herbs with us. A sweet moment was finding saffron, 藏红花, in one of his herbal blends. 📍 Cheuk Kee Beef Brisket|卓仔记牛腩 Cosy, warm and deeply comforting. The beef broth noodles were one of my favourite meals in Shanghai. 📍 Shanghai Breakfast Stall|大饼油条豆浆豆花(蒙古路店) A tiny family-run breakfast stall serving classic Shanghai breakfast. Youtiao, soy milk, dumplings and bread — simple, local and so delicious. 📍 ZhongYaoTang Gelato|忠曜堂新中式GELATO(湖南路店) TCM-inspired gelato, herbal flavours, plush charms and such a playful environment. Here, among the ancient villages along the Hunan-Jiangxi Salt Trail, we quieted our minds and reflected on the warmth of our camaraderie. Thriving since the Ming Dynasty, Shanbei Ancient Village sits on the ancient salt route connecting Youxian County to western Jiangxi. Its early settlers migrated from southern Jiangxi, bringing together the architectural techniques and folk customs of both Hunan and Jiangxi to coexist and flourish. Ming and Qing dynasty houses are scattered among the valley's terraced fields, while ancient study halls, arched stone bridges, and granite post roads remain perfectly preserved. Mountain streams gently wind through the village, framed by rolling fields and graceful old trees. This harmonious blend of human history and natural scenery remains untouched by commercial noise, offering a peaceful and profound atmosphere. Taking our time, we strolled along the old alleys and mountain paths, admiring the ancient architecture while sitting down to chat and look back on our team's journey of adaptation, perseverance, and growth. Everyone opened up, recalling those heartwarming moments of sharing the load during tough times at work and showing understanding in our daily routines, expressing heartfelt gratitude for each other's support and companionship. Nestled in this traditional farming and reading village on the Hunan-Jiangxi border, we slowed down to clear our minds and cherish the warmth of our fellowship. Dating back to the Ming Dynasty and situated along the ancient mountain trail between Hunan and Jiangxi, Caopo was settled by ancestors migrating from western Jiangxi, creating a unique melting pot of regional folk customs. The village is dotted with well-preserved Ming and Qing Dynasty residences, ancient study halls, arched stone bridges, and granite courier routes. With mountain streams gently winding around the village, sprawling idyllic fields, and graceful ancient trees, the cultural heritage and mountain landscapes blend seamlessly into a serene, timeless atmosphere. We took unhurried strolls along the ancient alleyways and mountain paths, admiring the historic architectural layouts while sitting together for casual chats, reflecting on our team's journey of adapting, persevering, and growing. These eight cities are genuinely cool and truly affordable. 1️⃣ Lhasa | Tibet In August, daytime temperatures in Lhasa are just over 20°C, and you'll need a jacket at night. ⏰ Visit the Potala Palace Square after 4:00 PM. The light hits the red walls at an angle, so you won't have to fight for a photo spot. 📍 Walk clockwise with the crowd around Barkhor Street, which surrounds the Jokhang Temple, and stop by a sweet tea house. 🍜 Guangming Gangqiong Sweet Tea House: A pot of sweet tea costs just a few yuan, and paired with Tibetan noodles, it makes a full meal. After visiting, stop by Shennong Valley on your way—the stream water is ice-cold. 🍜 In the city, have a bowl of Youxian rice noodles for a few yuan; it's authentically spicy. Staying near the train station is most convenient, with budget hotels costing just over 100 yuan. ⚠️ Some areas of the Yandi Mausoleum sacrificial zone are closed, so follow the signs. It's suitable for a slow stroll with elderly travelers, as there aren't too many steps. In August, Zhuzhou's city center is hot, but the mountains are cool, so don't just stay in the city. 3️⃣ Dandong | Liaoning In August, you'll need a light blanket to sleep in Dandong, and the breeze by the Yalu River is more comfortable than air conditioning. 📍 Visit the Yalu River Broken Bridge in the evening when the mist rises over the river, making the opposite bank look hazy. Mount Fenghuang is best climbed in the morning. ⏰ Enter the mountain at 7:00 AM and come down before noon to avoid the sun. You need a full day for Kuandian Hekou and Lvjiang Village. 🚄 Charter a car or take a bus from downtown Dandong, and stay overnight in Lvjiang Village so you don't feel rushed. 🍜 Try Dandong yellow clams and "menzi" (a local starch jelly dish); the prices at the riverside food stalls are lower than you'd expect. ⚠️ The Broken Bridge ticket isn't expensive, but think twice about the boat tour—you can see the river scenery from the shore too. Suitable for those who want to escape the heat and see different scenery. The rapeseed flowers in Lvjiang Village are still in their final stages in August, and many people camp by the river. 4️⃣ Honghe | Yunnan The Yuanyang Terraces are green in August. They don't have the mirror-like effect of the flooding season, but there are so few people you'll feel like you have the place to yourself. 📍 To watch the sunrise at Duoyishu, ⏰ arrive at the viewing platform before 6:00 AM to see the clouds and mist rising from the valley floor. Jianshui Ancient Town is quieter than Dali; take your time walking through the Zhu Family Garden and the Double Dragon Bridge. 🍜 Try Jianshui grilled tofu, eaten around a small stove for just a few cents a piece. The caoya (cattail shoot) rice noodles are also cheap. 🚄 High-speed trains from Kunming to Jianshui are convenient, and you can transfer to a bus from Jianshui to Yuanyang. It's suitable for families, and there are greenways by the lake, so pushing a stroller is no problem. In August, Star Lake still has lotus flowers, but the main draw is the cool water. Suitable for those who want to see Fujian Tulou without the crowds of Xiamen. In August in Zhangzhou, hide from the sun during the day and go out in the evening; if you get the rhythm right, it's comfortable. Phoenix Mountain is more suitable for those with good stamina. The section at Laoniubei (Old Ox Back) is really narrow, with cliffs on both sides. If you're afraid of heights, I suggest taking the adjacent boardwalk around it; don't force yourself. ⚠️ Bottled water costs 10 yuan a bottle on the mountain. It's recommended to bring two bottles; the money saved can be used for a bowl of noodles at the foot of the mountain. Kuandian River Estuary and Lüjiang Village are far from the city center, so driving is recommended. The "submerged land" landscape in Lüjiang Village depends on luck; it only appears in mid-to-late September when the water level recedes. In autumn, the ginkgo leaves on Dahong Mountain are just beginning to turn yellow; the best viewing period is another two weeks away. The advantage is that there are fewer people now, so you don't need to avoid crowds when taking photos. ⏰ It's recommended to enter the mountain around 8 AM. The fog hasn't dissipated yet, and the sea of ​​clouds shimmers among the mountains, creating a more enchanting atmosphere than a sunny midday. After descending, don't rush off. At a farmhouse restaurant at the foot of the mountain, order a pot of Suizhou Three Delicacies Soup—meatballs, fish balls, and lotus root balls cooked together. Stay at a lakeside guesthouse, and in the morning, opening the curtains reveals a misty lake. ⏰ At 6 AM, take a walk around the lakeside boardwalk. The air is filled with the scent of bamboo and water, more invigorating than coffee. Tianmu Lake fish head soup is their signature dish, but ⚠️ don't eat it at the scenic area entrance. Walk 200 meters into the town, and the same fish head will be 30% cheaper. The Spring and Autumn Period Yancheng is more suitable for history buffs. The layout of the three cities and three rivers is relatively well preserved. Rent an audio guide and explore at your own pace to experience the city layout from over 2,000 years ago. Dinosaur City is fine for families with children, but the queues for rides are quite long. It's recommended to avoid weekends or buy evening tickets, which are cheaper and the light show is more interesting than during the day. Regarding transportation, there are tourist buses from Changzhou city to Tianmu Lake, but the frequency is low. It's more recommended to take the high-speed train to Liyang Station and then a taxi, which allows for better time management. 04 Shuozhou|Shanxi Shahu Pass is not a "tourist attraction" in the traditional sense; it's more like a piece of frozen history. 📍 Standing on the ancient bridge, the stone slabs beneath your feet are polished smooth by the wheels of caravans throughout the ages, while the dilapidated earthen walls on either side still stand tall. There are no commercial streets or souvenir shops here, only the wind blowing in from the pass, clearing your head. ⏰ The light is best between 3 and 5 pm, when the setting sun paints the city walls golden, perfect for taking those desolate, epic photos. ⚠️ Don't wear light-colored shoes; the dirt roads are dusty, and your shoes will turn completely yellow after a walk. It's about an hour's drive from Shuozhou city. If you have enough time, you can visit the nearby Youyu Old Town, where the city walls are better preserved and there's no entrance fee. For food, there are several farmhouses in Shahukou Village, serving oat noodles with mutton sauce for around 20 yuan—enough to fill you up. 05 Weifang|Shandong Qingzhou Ancient City is much more "lively" than I imagined. 📍 Walking along Beimen Street, you'll find houses on both sides. An elderly woman sits on her doorstep picking chives, while children ride bicycles, bouncing along the stone path. Unlike some ancient towns filled with Yiwu-style souvenirs, the atmosphere here is authentically local. ⏰ The area truly comes alive after 7 PM. The lights come on, the tourists disperse, and locals come out for a stroll. There's an erhu player near the entrance of Ou Garden, and sugar paintings for sale outside Fucai Gate. 🍜 You absolutely must try the Old Locust Tree Fried Buns! They're filled with beef, have a crispy exterior, and burst with juice when you bite into them. They're only two yuan each, and I ate six in one go. ⚠️ Don't buy "Qingzhou Silver Melon" in the ancient town; most of it is imported and doesn't taste right. For authentic ones, go to 📍 Dongguan Farmers Market. It opens at 6 AM, and the melons are freshly picked and still have frost on them. 06 Qianxinan Buyi and Miao Autonomous Prefecture | Guizhou My suggestion for Wanfenglin and Malinghe Canyon is: see the canyon first, then the peaks. The waterfalls in Malinghe Canyon are breathtaking. 📍 Walking on the boardwalk, with a curtain of water cascading down overhead and emerald green river water beneath your feet, the mist washes over you, making you feel refreshed. ⏰ Around 10 am is the best time to go; the sunlight filtering through the mist creates rainbows, making the ticket price well worth it. Wanfenglin offers a different experience. Riding an electric scooter along the country roads between the peaks, with golden rice paddies on either side and distant, dome-shaped green mountains, you could easily spend an entire afternoon there. ⚠️ Don't believe anyone at the entrance who offers to "take you along the shortcuts for free." The official ticket is only a few dozen yuan, and taking the shortcuts is easy to get lost and dangerous. For accommodation, I recommend staying in a Buyi village within the scenic area. 📍 Nahui Village is a good option; you can see the karst peaks right outside your window and fall asleep to the sound of frogs croaking at night.
