Guo Yu Old Town (郭峪古城) is located in Jincheng, Shanxi Province, China. Accessible by private car or bus, it it located almost directly opposite the House of the Huangcheng Chancellor. Cross the small square and you can buy tickets at the front gate. Once inside, you will be lost in a maze of small courtyards and alleys, decorated with beautifully-colorer umbrellas...providing a perfect backdrop for taking photos. The architecture is old and charming and walk to the back to see the impressive tower for a close-up photo. It is quiet here during the daytime because this place comes to life at night, where it is lit up and many tourists come to witness the pretty spectacle. The famous House of the Huangcheng Chancellor (皇城相府-总宪府) is located near to to the city of Jincheng in northern China's Shanxi Province. This place can be reached by car or bus and the best time to visit is Spring or Summer, as the warm sunshine allows for good photo conditions. Tour guides are available at the front gate, along with maps and souvenirs. The place itself is fantastic for exploring, as there are numerous small alleyways and courtyards. You can also go inside the many buildings and see the beautiful relics and artefacts. The architecture is stunning and mysterious at the same time. Climb to the upper terrrace to see the wonderful tower and a panorama of the surrounding countryside. I actually believe the truly cool and peaceful places are often those “under-the-radar” cities. These 8 destinations were carefully selected after checking temperatures and visitor density. They have fewer people and great scenery, but most importantly, the temperature feels really comfortable. 01 Chenzhou | Hunan Chenzhou’s coolness comes from its waterways. Start the morning at Gaoyiling, where the Danxia landform is surrounded by water, creating a striking contrast between red rocks and green water. ⚠️ Be sure to arrive before 10 AM, or the boardwalk will be packed with tour groups. In the afternoon, head to the Dongjiang Lake tourist area. Don’t just watch the mist over Little Dongjiang; it’s worth strolling slowly along the lakeside boardwalk. The misty air makes it feel 5 to 6 degrees cooler than downtown. At dusk, go to the other side of Gaoyiling tourist area to watch the sunset, when the light turns the cliffs warm orange and shadows stretch long. Reserve the next day for Mangshan Wuzhifeng. After taking the cable car up, the altitude and mountain breeze make short sleeves feel a bit chilly. 🍜 At the scenic area entrance, the spicy roast chicken is flavorful but don’t order too much—the portions are generous. 02 Jincheng | Shanxi Jincheng’s charm lies in its perfect blend of ancient architecture and coolness. The Huangcheng Xiangfu Ecological Cultural Tourist Area is large but shaded, so walking around won’t feel hot. It’s best to enter after 3 PM. First, explore the main buildings of Xiangfu, then when the sun is lower, visit the back garden. Sitting under the corridor, the breeze flows through, and you can hear the rustling leaves. ⚠️ Don’t buy the “special vinegar” recommended by guides inside; it’s double the price. The same product at the exit supermarket costs half as much. After touring, try a bowl of helo noodles in the nearby village. The noodles are chewy, and the broth has a hearty, starchy flavor. Two to three hours is enough to explore the whole area—no need to rush, take your time. 03 Kunming | Yunnan Kunming hardly needs praise, but in August, avoid the strong sun by Dianchi Lake. Morning is the best time to visit for the best light and clearest water color. In the afternoon, head to Chengbi Lake, which is larger than Haokun but less crowded. It’s perfect for walking along the trails, and when tired, you can rest in the shade. Xilin’s mountains and waters offer a different vibe. The terrain is wilder and the paths tougher, but standing halfway up the mountain, you can see the entire valley below. The wind is strong enough to blow your hat off. ⚠️ These places are far apart. Driving yourself is most convenient. If you don’t have a car, hiring a driver for a day costs about 300 to 400 yuan—don’t skimp on this. 06 Urumqi | Xinjiang August in Urumqi is already cool in the mornings and evenings. The International Grand Bazaar is lively and bustling, but don’t buy things randomly; dried fruits are more expensive than in supermarkets, so just look. Afterward, go to the International Grand Bazaar pedestrian street and have a bowl of handmade yogurt. It’s sour enough to make you frown but perfect for cooling down. In the afternoon, visit Hongguang Mountain. It’s not tall but offers a great view of the city. The strong wind clears your head. The best recommendation is to go to Dabancheng at dusk. The wind turbines line up at the mountain pass, and the breeze carries the scent of the grasslands. Some locals even complain about too many tourists, but on the days you visit, the whole street might feel like it’s just yours. 01 Changsha | Hunan Changsha is famously hot, but if you know how to enjoy it, you can avoid most of the heat in the early morning and evening. Start at 7 AM by hiking Mount Yuelu. Enter from the south gate and take the gentle slope past Aiwan Pavilion. It takes half an hour to reach the top. The mountain breeze cools you before you even break a sweat. Don’t rush down—there’s a trail at the foot with small shops selling scallion oil pancakes fresh from the pan, 2 yuan each, crispy and flaky. At noon, escape to the provincial museum. The coolness is a bonus, but the artifacts from Mawangdui are worth spending half an hour admiring. ⚠️ Closed on Mondays. Book free tickets through the official account three days in advance. Don’t wait until you get to the door to check your phone. After 4 PM, visit Tianxin Pavilion. The city wall isn’t tall, but the evening light makes the brick joints glow red, perfect for sitting and daydreaming. At night, walk along Xiangjiang Middle Road. The breeze from the river is much more pleasant than air conditioning. 📍 Huaminglou is in Ningxiang, a 20-minute high-speed train ride away. Honestly, if you’re short on time, skip it and spend half a day at Mount Yuelu instead. 02 Lishui | Zhejiang Lishui is one of those places you only realize exists after you visit. Don’t rush to Yunhe terraced fields at midday—the sun’s glare on the water makes photos look washed out. ⏰ Arrive at the No. 9 viewing platform between 5:30 and 9 AM. The mist hasn’t cleared yet, and the terraces stack down the hillside like shattered mirrors. After the terraces, head straight to Jinyun Xiandu. At the stream below Dinghu Peak, wade in barefoot. The cool water runs from your feet up to your knees. I hesitated to mention Qingtian Shimen Cave because it’s quite remote. But if you like off-the-beaten-path adventures, enter through the back gate of the scenic area and follow the stream upstream. You’ll find abandoned plank roads covered in moss thick enough to sit on. ⚠️ Don’t go after rain—the rocks are slippery. The whole route takes about two hours. There are so few tourists you can hear your own footsteps. Lishui is best enjoyed slowly. Don’t try to visit three spots in one day. Terraces in the morning, Xiandu in the afternoon, and back to town for a bowl of Jinyun sesame cake with preserved vegetable filling at night. It’s fresh and hot, so fragrant you won’t want to stop eating. 03 Weihai | Shandong Weihai’s sea is different from Qingdao’s. Qingdao is lively; Weihai is peaceful. After watching the sunrise, walk back along the coastal road. The sea is on your right, wind turbines on your left. Slow down, roll down the window, and snap a couple of photos. I don’t recommend spending half a day at Huaxia City. It’s more like a large garden, better for leisurely strolls with elders or kids. If you’re alone, save your time for Liugong Island. The old pier there empties out after 3 PM. Sitting on the stone steps watching seagulls chase the ferry is much more interesting than squeezing onto the deck for tourist photos. ⚠️ Food on the island is expensive. Bring water and bread. In the evening, walk the coastal trail at Weihai Park. The sea glows pink and gold at sunset. Locals walk dogs and jog. No one’s holding up phones to take pictures—you’ll know you came to the right place. 04 Xining | Qinghai Xining is the kind of city where you still need a jacket at night in summer. It’s perfect for cooling off. Ta’er Monastery is a half-hour drive from downtown. ⏰ Arrive before 8 AM to avoid crowds. The scent of butter flowers mixes with morning light in the prayer hall. Don’t just take photos—spin the prayer wheels clockwise with the locals. Your palms will warm from rubbing the wood. That feeling is more vivid than any guidebook. In the afternoon, return to the city. The Dongguan Mosque is worth a visit. An old tree shades the courtyard, where elders sit chatting in dialect. Find a corner to sit and listen. Even if you don’t understand, the relaxed atmosphere is unmistakable. ⚠️ Female visitors should wear long pants and sleeves. Free robes are available at the entrance. The city walls are so high you have to look up. ⏰ Enter after 3 PM when most tour groups have left. You can leisurely explore the Yushi Mansion courtyard. The brick carvings are detailed enough to spend half an hour admiring. Don’t just focus on the buildings. There’s a trail on the mountain behind the mansion. Climb it to overlook the entire ancient complex. The gray tiles stretch out like an ink painting. ⚠️ The trail steps are steep. If your knees aren’t strong, stay below. Stay overnight at a guesthouse next to the mansion. The owner will recommend a nearby village where you can try Jincheng fried pork with millet porridge. The pork is tender and garlicky. After dinner, stroll the village. The streetlights are dim, elders sit cooling off by the walls, fans waving slowly. Time seems to move slower here. 06 Xuancheng | Anhui Xuancheng is one of those cities you’ve heard of but don’t know much about. But visiting Chaji Village will make you remember it. This village is much quieter than Hongcun. ⏰ Enter after 5:30 PM when most tourists have left and the sound of the stream comes alive. The stone paths are polished smooth. Moss grows at the base of old houses. Smoke drifts from tile cracks, mixing with the scent of home-cooked meals. Jixi Longchuan and Chaji have different vibes. Longchuan is more orderly. The wood carvings in the Hu family ancestral hall are worth a close look. Lions and lotuses on the beams are so finely carved you won’t dare blink. ⚠️ The ancestral hall closes at 5 PM. Don’t arrive too late. The two villages are an hour apart by car. It’s best to stay overnight in Chaji and leave the next morning. Early morning Chaji is the most beautiful. The mist lingers, and the sounds of washing and birdsong blend gently—so much softer than any alarm clock. 07 Hengshui | Hebei Hengshui Lake is one of those places you might miss if you’re just driving by, but it’s worth a special trip. ⏰ Arrive at the lake at 6 AM. A thin mist floats over the water. Lotus flowers are just blooming, with dew rolling on the petals. Rent a small boat and row into the reeds. The sound of oars parting the water is more soothing than any white noise. Leave by noon when the sun is high. Have iron pot stewed fish at a lakeside old restaurant. The fish is freshly caught and richly flavored. Dip the flatbread in the broth—it’s so good you’ll want to lick your chopsticks clean. ⚠️ Avoid the lake in the afternoon. It’s scorching with no shade. Hengshui is perfect for a side trip. If you take the high-speed train from Beijing, it’s just an hour away. The sea on your right is a blue-green, the banana groves on your left. The air carries a mix of sea salt and fruit fragrance. Crocodile Mountain Scenic Area is worth the climb. The plank road hugs the volcanic rock cliffs. Waves splash at your feet and spray your face, refreshingly cool. ⚠️ The sun is strongest from noon to 3 PM.
