A quiet island escape just 30 minutes off the coast — but don’t expect luxury, expect raw nature 🌴
That’s the first impression I got when stepping onto Songsong Island 🌊
Located off the coast of Yan, Kedah, this island sits within the Jerai Geopark and is only accessible by boat from Sungai Udang Jetty. The ride takes around 20–30 minutes, crossing calm waters before the island slowly appears on the horizon.
Surrounded by smaller nearby islands like Bidan Island, Telor Island, and Bunting Island, the whole area feels like a quiet cluster of hidden islands. Peaceful, remote, and far from city life 🌿
Once you arrive, the vibe is simple and raw. No luxury facilities, no resort comfort, just nature, sea breeze, and an escape from everything busy.
The island is great for fishing, snorkeling, and camping. It’s the kind of place where you don’t really need an itinerary. Just slow down and enjoy the surroundings.
Interestingly, Songsong Island also carries a layer of history that many visitors might not notice at first. There is a small burial area on the island, believed by some to be old graves, while others say they could be the resting place of Kedah warriors who once hid here during past conflicts.
The island was also once used as a military training site, though that is no longer the case today.
🌊 The surrounding sea is surprisingly warm and rich in marine life. You’ll find beautiful fish swimming close to shore, along with sea cucumbers and even sea urchins scattered across the seabed, so extra caution is needed when walking or snorkeling.
That said, this is not a perfectly polished destination. Facilities are very basic. Clean water is sourced from a nearby well for bathing and cooking, while public toilets exist but are poorly maintained, with seawater used for flushing.
🌙 At night, the island becomes extremely quiet. But it also means mosquitoes are everywhere, so proper tents or hammocks with mosquito nets are highly recommended.
💡 A small tip: weekends can get a bit crowded with campers, so timing your visit makes a big difference if you prefer solitude.
Songsong Island may not offer comfort or luxury, but it offers something harder to find — raw island life, quiet history, and a sense of isolation that feels completely untouched 🌊✨
