#fallcolors #100waysoftravel Niigata is located at up north of Japan, and Yahiko is a nice place located at countryside west of Tsubame. It spreads out over 130,000m2 of land size, and is popular with its stunningly beautiful landscapes of tunnels, waterfalls etc. What makes this park so famous despite its remote location is the Momiji Valley, where several hundreds of maple trees changing its colours to red and orange, which is truly mesmerizing. The vermillion coloured bridge makes the park landscape even more pictureque, and everywhere has a nice place for a picture to be taken. Besides, there are lights being installed for night viewing of maple trees so that visitors can also enjoy the night picturesque maple sceneries.

Niigata is great lol The food is delicious and the air is clean. Their rice is the best in Japan! Right? So, of course, their sake is the best in Japan! (That's just my opinion.) I don't like cold places, but snow is still so wonderful. It's kind of exciting. I would like to say that this year's snow is abnormal. It's falling too much. But the open-air bath when it's snowing too much was also amazing. (I rushed in at the time the morning baths started so I could take a photo.) I also visited Yahiko Shrine, trying not to get in close to the crowds. But the snow was so heavy that there were only a few worshippers... #Niigata #Hot Springs #Yahiko Shrine #Trips to go on for New Year's Eve #Kagami Mochi #Gourmet #Trips to go on for New Year's Eve #Trips to go on for New Year's Eve

A stunning terraced rice field & nature healing trip in Niigata🌿 Catch the tail end of summer for a pastoral getaway. Sharing my essential 2-day Niigata itinerary. It's uncrowded, beautiful, and perfect for Japanese-style photography! My favorite part is the "breathing" green terraced fields—every shot looks like a desktop wallpaper📸 📍Day 1: Terraced field tour > Yahiko Shrine ▪️Hoshitoge Rice Terraces (arrive before 7:00 AM recommended) Known as the "Terraced Fields of the Sky," it looks like a fairyland when shrouded in morning mist! For the best shots, choose the observation deck or the small paths between the fields. Remember to wear non-slip shoes. ▪️Matsudai Rice Terraces (excellent light and shadow at noon) The wavy ridges are super photogenic. There's a local farmers' market nearby; I recommend buying rice balls made with Koshihikari rice. ▪️Yahiko Shrine (soft light after 4:00 PM) The vermilion torii gate pairs perfectly with the mossy stone steps. It's said to be very effective for love luck! 📍Day 2: Shinano River walk > Furumachi district ▪️Shinano River Delta (at sunrise) The mouth of Japan's longest river. I recommend the river mouth observation deck, where you can capture the spectacular sight of the "river embracing the sea." ▪️Niigata City Aquarium (10:00 AM–4:00 PM) The viral penguin walk is so healing! You can see the ocean view from the cafe on the second floor. ▪️Furumachi Geisha Memorial Hall (beautiful when lit up at night) Edo-style flower district architecture. High chance of encountering a geisha. 📸Best photo spots: 1️⃣ Top of Mt. Yahiko Ropeway station (panoramic view of the Sea of Japan) 2️⃣ Hoshitoge Rice Terraces at sunrise (arrive by 5:30 AM recommended) 3️⃣ Shinano River sunset cruise (dreamy golden light) 4️⃣ Furumachi Geisha District stone paths (traditional Japanese atmosphere) 🍱Must-eat list ✔️Pia Bandai Market: Sea urchin bowl / Crab miso soup ✔️Niigata Station Bandai Exit: Famous tonkatsu restaurant "Tonkatsu Mitsui" ✔️Local specialty: Sasa Dango (sweet sticky rice treat wrapped in bamboo leaves) 🏡Accommodation recommendations ▫️Dormy Inn Niigata: Rooftop hot spring with night views of the Shinano River ▫️Satoyama Jujo: Hot spring inn next to the rice terraces, includes breakfast and dinner, approx. ¥20,000 per person ⚠️Tips 🔸Lots of mosquitoes in the terraced field area, be sure to bring insect repellent 🔸Some farm roads are very narrow; renting a small car is recommended for self-driving 🔸Large temperature difference between day and night; remember to bring a light jacket After staying in the city for too long, you really need a trip like this to be healed by nature. Looking at the layered rice terraces, I suddenly understood what the "vitality of the land" means🌱

Yahiko Shrine is a historic site boasting over 2,400 years of history, even mentioned in the ancient Man'yoshu poetry collection. Dedicated to the deity Ame-no-Kagoyama-no-Mikoto, it draws hundreds of thousands of visitors seeking blessings every year. The shrine grounds are enveloped by towering, majestic trees, creating a serene and tranquil atmosphere. Near the south entrance, a crystal-clear flowing stream adds a refreshing touch to the scenery. Getting there: Take the train to Yahiko Station, then it’s about a 1-kilometer walk. You’ll pass through Yahiko Park on the way—a stunning spot for cherry blossom viewing if you visit during the spring. Opening Hours: 8:30 AM – 4:30 PM Admission: Free

📅 Itinerary Day 1: Hiking in Niigata City. Visited the food and shopping plazas and various specialty shops near the station, then hiked to the Bandai shopping district, followed the Shinano River to Bandai Bridge, and continued to the Furumachi shopping street. Day 2: Visited Yahiko Shrine (2400 years old), about an hour's train ride from Niigata Station. It was very crowded, so we didn't pray. We browsed around the shrine and bought some amulets. On the mountain path leading to the shrine, we bought some Yahiko rice (said to be rice offered to the imperial family). Day 3: The train journey took nearly three hours across Niigata and Fukushima prefectures, leading to Aizu-Wakamatsu Station, famous for its Tsuruga Castle. The small town was very quiet; most restaurants didn't open until 11:00 or 11:30. Near the entrance to Tsuruga Castle, we ate Kitakata Ramen; the light soy sauce base and incredibly tender, melt-in-your-mouth char siu were amazing. 🏨 Accommodation Recommendation: We stayed at the Bandai Silver Hotel, a fantastic location just a one-minute walk from Bandai Plaza. 🍴 Food Recommendation: In Niigata, known as the "Ramen Kingdom," I recommend a ramen shop called "Magokoro-tei" near the station. They serve miso ramen, and I highly recommend their special "Shimōri" (frozen pork back fat) ramen – it was absolutely amazing and great value for money. Of course, Niigata Prefecture is famous for its rice, so let's try some rice from the snow country! 📌 Useful Tips: Taking the Joetsu Shinkansen from Tokyo to Niigata Station takes less than two hours. In the time it takes to nap, you'll be transported to Kawabata Yasunari's "Snow Country," a truly beautiful place. If you have the chance, I'd love to visit Sado Island and Echigo-Yuzawa next time.

#springtravel This is a very famous sake brewery, not only in Niigata but throughout all of Japan. They have received many awards and produce a huge variety of sake, all differing in flavor profiles and rice polishing ratios. You can learn more about this during a guided tour of the brewery — unfortunately, I didn’t manage to join one — or during a tasting session. For 1,500 yen, you can sample a large number of different types of sake. There is also a free tasting option, where you can try two types of amazake and one sake. In addition, they have a gachapon machine: for 500 yen, you can win a token that can later be exchanged for a bottle of sake. You can also buy sake kasu — the byproduct of sake production — for 880 yen, and pack as much as you can tightly fit into a bag. Very interesting. Highly recommended.

#springtravel Sadly when I visited, Yahiko shrine area had experienced an unusually warm summer which caused the autumn leaves to come really late. As such all I could see was green. However I still did get some stunning photos with transitional foliage and whatever red leaves there were. If I had another chance in the future I would definitely try and visit again at the peak of the autumn foliage as I believe it would look absolutely wonderful. Oh there was a night light up which I missed too due to visiting in the morning. Do plan accordingly if you wish to see the night light up.

Sengando Suspension Bridge, one of Niigata's 50 Best Bridges, is a 124-meter-long suspension bridge. It's closed during the winter, but its vibrant red color, set against the green mountains, makes for a truly beautiful sight. ⛰️ The bridge is 35 meters high, making it an impressive sight! With a parking lot nearby, it's an easy tourist spot to visit. ☀️ From the suspension bridge, you can enjoy expansive views of the Echigo Plain and the Okawazu Diversion Channel. It doesn't sway much, and the bottom is covered with planks, so even small children can cross safely! Be sure to check it out! ❣️

Yahiko Shrine is renowned as a strong spiritual spot for improving work luck and fostering relationships. It is said to have been established over 2400 years ago and is even mentioned in the Manyoshu, making it a historically significant shrine.⛩️ The central pillar of the first torii gate is elevated about 6cm above the ground! Try placing your hand underneath it.⛩️ After visiting the shrine, why not take the ropeway up Mount Yahiko?🚡 There’s a free shuttle bus departing from right near the shrine, making it convenient🚌. It’s about a 20-minute walk otherwise. The ropeway takes you to the summit in just 5 minutes⛰️, offering a panoramic view of the Echigo Plain. Tickets are 1500 yen for adults and 750 yen for children for a round trip. From the summit, it’s about a 15-minute walk to the sacred mausoleum! Even a 3-year-old child managed the walk🚶. Be sure to visit and feel the spiritual energy!

Did you know about this renowned 300-year-old inn located right next to Yahiko Shrine, a well-known power spot? Nadai-ya is a historic inn in Yahiko Village, Niigata Prefecture, that serves dishes made with seasonal ingredients. Both dinner and breakfast were incredibly luxurious and surprisingly filling! I was completely stuffed! The inn draws water from Yahiko Onsen, also known as the "hot spring of the gods," and is a hot spring that is safe for people of all ages and genders, and is said to promote good health. The private family bath is an open-air bath with a panoramic view of the Echigo Plain. Please note that you must make a reservation in advance to use it. Right next to the inn is a Takoyaki tree over 1,000 years old. It's famous as the great tree of Yahiko, so be sure to go and see it! 🌳

#JanuaryDestinations2026 Look closely at this torii gate. Although its surface is painted vermilion, it's not actually made of wood or stone, but rather constructed using modern technology! To withstand the harsh climate of Niigata Prefecture's snowy areas, this large torii gate uses special "weather-resistant steel." This steel is extremely strong and corrosion-resistant, allowing this giant landmark, built in 1982, to stand firm to this day. Its form belongs to the "Ryobu Torii" style, characterized by four shorter pillars supporting the two main pillars (six legs in total), making the structure very stable. This torii gate showcases the Showa-era Japanese ability to combine traditional design with modern engineering technology, offering details that will captivate structural enthusiasts. 🌟 Insider Highlights: 1. Shrine Number Plaque: The plaque hanging above the torii gate (shrine number plaque) is the size of 12 tatami mats! 2. Column Base Structure: Observe the connection between the main column and the supporting column; the riveted steel joints have a very industrial feel. 💰 Cost: • Free: Visits are completely free.

#JanuaryDestinations2026 Most torii gates require you to get out of your car and walk past, but the Yahiko Grand Torii Gate is one you can drive through! This torii gate spans Prefectural Route 29, with a 20-meter gap between the two pillars, equivalent to the width of a two-way road. As you approach, the red torii gate grows larger and larger, eventually filling your entire windshield. The moment you pass through it truly feels like entering a sacred realm (although it's still a few kilometers from the actual Yahiko Shrine). For those on a road trip, this is an absolute must-see spot, and you don't need to look for parking—just drive over and experience the grandeur! 📝 Important Notes: 1. Safety First: There is a busy road beneath the torii gate; please do not park in the middle of the road to take photos. 2. Parking: There is a designated parking area next to the torii gate. Please park your car properly before walking over if you want to take photos. 💡 Transportation Recommendations: • By Car: Approximately 15 minutes from the Hokuriku Expressway "Sanjo Tsubame IC"

#JanuaryDestinations2026 Have you ever seen a torii gate as tall as a 10-story building? The "Yahiko Shrine Great Torii Gate" in Niigata Prefecture reaches an astonishing height of 30.16 meters! That's significantly taller than the Unicorn Gundam in Odaiba (approximately 20 meters). Built to commemorate the opening of the Joetsu Shinkansen, this massive red torii gate stands majestically on the vast Echigo Plain, visible from afar. When you stand beneath the pillars and look up, you'll feel an overwhelming sense of grandeur; humans truly appear as insignificant as ants before it. This isn't just a religious structure; it's a landmark-level megastructure! 📸 Photography Tips: 1. Distant View Compression: Stand in a distant field and use a telephoto lens to capture the sacred image of the torii gate overlapping with Mount Yahiko in the background. 2. Direct Downward Angle: Shoot close to the pillars and upward for the strongest sense of its immense structure. 📍 Attraction Information: • Admission: Free all day.

#September2025 📍Address: Yahiko 2916, Yahiko Village, Nishikanbara-ku, Niigata Prefecture 💰Average Cost: HKD$50 💞Recommended: Enjoy delicious warabimochi😋😋 🕰️Opening Hours: 10:00 AM - 5:00 PM This is the main branch of Kanmi-chu Kamakura, located in Yahiko Park in Niigata. From Tokyo, take the Shinkansen 🚆🚆 to Tsubame-Sanjo, then take the subway 🚇🚇 to Yahiko Station. After passing Yahiko Principality, you'll see the shop 👀 in front of the shrine's torii gate ⛩️. It's about a 4-hour drive from Tokyo 🚶♀️🚶🚶♂️. Their signature dish is warabimochi. That day, we ordered a set meal that included 10 black sesame warabimochi and a cup of hot matcha 🍵. You can also add your own brown sugar for a richer flavor 🤗🤗🤗. The warabimochi is incredibly tender, smooth, and sweet 😍😍😍. Ten pieces were quickly devoured, and paired with warm matcha 🍵, it was a perfect place to relax after visiting Yahiko Park on a cold day before heading to Yahiko Shrine⛩️.

During our stay in Niigata, we made a memorable visit to Yahiko Shrine, and it quickly became one of my personal favorites. Nestled in a lush forest and embraced by mountains, the entire setting exuded tranquility and spiritual calm. The walk from the car park to the main shrine was already a highlight. Surrounded by towering green trees, the peaceful forest path felt almost therapeutic. Breathing in the fresh mountain air and listening to the gentle sounds of nature made the short hike feel both refreshing and energizing. The shrine itself, set against the backdrop of the surrounding hills, was majestic yet understated, and provided the perfect opportunity for some stunning photographs. Facilities such as clean washrooms were available near the top, which was appreciated. If you’re in Niigata, Yahiko Shrine is a must-visit—not just for its cultural significance, but for the serenity it offers in a naturally beautiful setting. #summervacay #YahikoShrine #NiigataTravel #HiddenJapan #ShrineInTheWoods #SpiritualJapan #NatureWalkJapan #ForestShrine #PeacefulPlaces #OffTheBeatenPathJapan #ShrineEscape #japan #japantrip #tohoku #travel #tohokutrip

At the foot of Mount Yahiko lies a thousand-year-old shrine, where 180 vermilion lanterns illuminate the night, turning the stone steps into a river of light. The shrine maidens teach the method of praying for 'love fulfillment': write an ema together and then circle the Couple Cedar three times. Midway up the mountain, the 'Dragon Waterfall' is revered as a power spot, where couples hold hands and walk through the rainbow in the mist.
