Sima Wengong Temple in Xia County, Yuncheng, Shanxi, is the hometown and final resting place of Sima Guang. Originally founded in the Song Dynasty, the current layout strictly adheres to Song Dynasty standards, with the main structures renovated during the Ming and Qing dynasties. It preserves a large number of original Northern Song Dynasty national treasures, including authentic Northern Song main halls, original Song Dynasty sculptures, and famous steles inscribed by Su Shi. A single garden spans the Song, Ming, and Qing dynasties, making it a must-visit destination to understand "Zizhi Tongjian" (Comprehensive Mirror in Aid of Governance) and the spirit of Northern Song scholar-officials. It is a Major Historical and Cultural Site Protected at the National Level (Third Batch). 🏯 Core tour route and four must-see national treasures: ① Sima Guang Bronze Statue Square | A life story hidden in the details The iconic landmark seen upon entering the park is full of ingenuity: the total height is 6.8 meters, corresponding to Sima Guang's age at death, 68. The bronze statue is 4.9 meters tall, representing his 49-year political career. The 1.9-meter base pays tribute to the lifelong effort he spent compiling "Zizhi Tongjian" over 19 years. Sculptures of him smashing the vat to save a friend and writing at his desk are placed nearby, connecting the trajectory of his life from his clever youth to his decades of historical writing. ② The temple's greatest treasure | Apricot Blossom Stele (Stele of Loyalty, Purity, and Virtue) 🔥 The most precious cultural treasure in the entire temple. The original stele was commissioned by the Northern Song imperial court and records Sima Guang's lifelong achievements. It was written and inscribed by Su Shi himself, making it a rare stele featuring two legendary figures. The original stele was smashed during political strife, but later generations excavated the fragments from the soil of an apricot tree and reconstructed it, hence the name "Apricot Blossom Stele." ③ Yuqing Zen Temple | Authentic Northern Song architecture + original Song Dynasty colored sculptures 🔥 The most hardcore ancient architectural highlight in the park! It is one of the few well-preserved original Northern Song main halls in Shanxi, with vigorous wooden structural style and clear Song Dynasty design. The hall currently houses 21 original Song Dynasty colored sculptures (originally 22, one Vajra is missing): the three 3-meter-tall gold-painted Buddhas in the center are very special—the Buddha statues have beards, which is rare in Han Chinese Buddhist iconography, and the style carries the charm of Liao Dynasty sculpture. The Buddhas are flanked by 2 attendant Bodhisattvas, with sixteen Arhats on the east and west walls. Although the Song sculptures were repainted during the Qing Dynasty, the main bodies are original Song works. Some Arhat heads were stolen, and the existing statues bear the scars of these cultural relics' turbulent history. ④ Wengong Ancestral Hall & Family Cemetery ▪️Wengong Ancestral Hall: Renovated during the Qianlong reign of the Qing Dynasty, the hall houses colored sculptures of five ancestors from four generations of the Sima family, with Sima Guang's father, Sima Chi, in the center. It is solemn and orderly. The walls of the hall display the famous essay "Xunjian Shikang" (Admonishing My Son Kang on Frugality), Sima Guang's family instructions urging his descendants to be diligent, frugal, and upright. ▪️Sima Family Cemetery: The family ancestral graveyard is arranged according to ancient rites, with Northern Song stone statues (stone figures, horses, and sheep) standing quietly on both sides of the spirit way. Sima Guang's own tomb has no magnificent stele or mound, just a simple earthen mound—a testament to his life of integrity and incorruptibility, resting peacefully in his hometown. ✨ Reflections on visiting ancient sites When I was young, I knew Sima Guang only for his cleverness in "smashing the vat to save a friend." Visiting Wengong Temple as an adult, I finally understood his life of serving four emperors, dedicating himself to history, and remaining upright and incorruptible. Nineteen years of writing at his desk resulted in a textbook of imperial history. He lived a life of diligence and frugality, holding fast to his principles, using literature to convey the Way, and using integrity to cultivate himself. The garden is filled with ancient cypresses, and the steles stand in silent witness, holding the purest patriotism and eternal integrity of a Northern Song scholar. 📍 Super practical visiting tips ▪️Located in Xiaochaocun, Shuitou Town, Xia County, Yuncheng. You can drive or charter a car, and combine it with attractions in Xinjiang County for a trip. ▪️Recommended tour route: First see the Song sculptures and architecture, then admire Su Shi's Apricot Blossom Stele, and finally visit the ancestral hall and cemetery.

Starting from Xia County, a budget of CNY 1,500 is more than enough for a 3-day trip. Xia County itself is dense with ancient architecture and has affordable prices. Use Xia County as your base: spend one day immersing yourself in local culture and hot springs, then spend two days easily connecting to the Guandi Temple, Salt Lake, and ancient villages around Yuncheng for a comfortable pace. 🗓️ 3-Day Itinerary Suggestion: Ancient Architecture, Hot Springs, and Salt Lake Day 1: In-depth Tour of Xia County's Local Culture In the morning, visit Sima Wengong Shrine (ticket approx. CNY 40), the family shrine of the Northern Song dynasty official Sima Guang. The shrine preserves the "Sima Wengong Stele" written and inscribed by Su Shi, and the Jin dynasty clay sculptures of the 18 Arhats in Yuqing Zen Temple are among the earliest surviving mud sculptures in Shanxi. Afterward, head to Duiyundong (ticket CNY 30), a Yuan dynasty Taoist architectural complex built into the loess gullies. It resembles the Potala Palace from a distance and is most photogenic when shrouded in mist after rain. In the afternoon, visit Yaotai Mountain (free), the top of the 8 ancient scenic spots of Xia County. The main peak is 987m high, and the 9-story pagoda on the summit offers a view of the Zhongtiao Mountains and the Xia County basin. In the evening, stay at the Tianmu Xia Du Hot Spring Hotel to soak in the strontium-rich hot spring and relieve fatigue. This 4-star hotel is highly rated, and the private hot spring room experience is excellent. For dinner, have a bowl of Guan Gong pulled noodles in the county town—the noodles are thin and chewy, served with a ladle of pork lard and scallion soup, which is how Yuncheng locals start their day. Day 2: Jiezhou Guandi Temple + Yuncheng Salt Lake In the morning, take the 102 intercity bus from Xia County toward Yuncheng (fare CNY 3–5) and get off at Jiezhou. Jiezhou Guandi Temple is the largest Guandi Temple in the world, featuring red walls, glazed tiles, and thousand-year-old cypresses. The ticket is CNY 60; we recommend setting aside 2–3 hours. For lunch, have a bowl of Wang Jian mutton soup in Jiezhou Town, made with broth boiled from the same ancient well water as the Guandi Temple, served with crescent bread for a hearty meal. In the afternoon, continue by bus to Yuncheng to visit the Colorful Salt Lake. The lake water turns pink in spring. You can rent an electric scooter to slowly tour along the lake and head to the viewing platform at sunset when the light is best. In the evening, go to the Hedong Night Market. Must-try items include Lao Wu stir-fried jelly noodles and mutton hubu; you can have a very satisfying meal for about CNY 30 per person. Return to Xia County for the night. Day 3: Sijiao Ecological Tourism Area + Luming Valley, Relaxed Return In the morning, depart from Xia County and follow the Yellow River No. 1 Tourist Highway to the Sijiao Ecological Tourism Area. There is a 25km-long canyon boardwalk where you can see the Heilongtan Waterfall, Emerald Valley streams, and thousand-year-old pine forests. With an average summer temperature of only about 18 °C, it is the last primitive forest in southern Shanxi. For lunch, have a farmhouse meal in Sijiao Town and try gouquan (a local pasta) with mutton heluo. In the afternoon, on the way back, stop by Luming Valley, which is located along the Yellow River No. 1 Highway, just a 10-minute drive from Xia County. The rainbow slide and bamboo swings are great for relaxing, and both adults and children can have fun. In the evening, buy some Wenxi boiled cakes as a souvenir (a provincial intangible cultural heritage snack that is "silver-wrapped gold and can be pulled into threads"), then head back at a leisurely pace. 💰 Budget Breakdown (Total approx. CNY 1,100–1,300) · Transportation (approx. CNY 100): The 102 intercity bus from Xia County to Yuncheng costs CNY 3–5 depending on the distance, with frequent departures. Taxi starting fares in the county are low; for trips to Duiyundong or Sima Guang Shrine, we recommend taking a taxi or ride-sharing, which costs about CNY 20–30 per trip. · Accommodation (approx. CNY 300): Economy hotels in Xia County cost about CNY 100–120/night. Xia County Xinxing Hotel is located in the city center, making it convenient for travel. If you want to soak in hot springs, you can stay at the Tianmu Xia Du Hot Spring Hotel, where private hot spring rooms cost about CNY 300–400/night. · Tickets (approx. CNY 130): Sima Guang Shrine CNY 40 + Duiyundong CNY 30 + Jiezhou Guandi Temple CNY 60. Yaotai Mountain, Salt Lake, Sijiao, and Luming Valley are basically free or have low minimum consumption. · Dining (approx. CNY 400): Prices in Xia County are affordable. Guan Gong pulled noodles cost a dozen yuan per bowl, mutton soup is about CNY 20–30 per person, and Yellow River carp is about CNY 50 per person. You can eat very comfortably for CNY 400 over 3 days. 🍜 Specialties · Guan Gong pulled noodles: The most representative pasta in Yuncheng. The noodles are thin, white, and chewy, served with pork lard and scallion soup—a very solid breakfast. · Wang Jian mutton soup: A time-honored brand in Jiezhou. The broth is boiled with ancient well water and served with crescent bread. The soup is rich and the meat is tender. · Wenxi boiled cakes: A provincial intangible cultural heritage snack. "Silver-wrapped gold and can be pulled into threads," sweet but not greasy, suitable as a souvenir. · Mutton hubu: Unleavened pancake strips stewed in mutton soup. Chewy and flavorful, an old taste from the Hedong Night Market. 💡 Practical Tips · Transportation: Driving yourself is the most convenient way to travel in Xia County. We recommend driving to attractions in towns like Duiyundong and Sijiao. If you are not driving, the 102 intercity bus is the most economical way to connect Yuncheng and Xia County. · Clothing: Both Duiyundong and Sijiao Ecological Area require walking, so wear non-slip, comfortable sports shoes. There is a large temperature difference between day and night in the mountains, so bring a light jacket. · Best season: Spring and autumn are the most comfortable. In spring, the cherry blossoms at Duiyundong are in full bloom; in autumn, the forests at Sijiao are ablaze with color. · Special note: Touching is prohibited in the stele area of Sima Guang Shrine; you can bring a notebook to copy the inscriptions. There is no signal in the canyon of Sijiao Ecological Area, so we recommend traveling with a companion. Starting from Xia County, 3 days is just enough to connect local culture, hot springs, and the Guandi Temple and Salt Lake around Yuncheng. It's an affordable, authentic, and solid short trip in southern Shanxi~

· Taxi or self-drive recommended · The Sima Guang Shrine scenic area is on the same route as Xinjiang (Jiangzhou Ancient City, Fusheng Temple, etc.). If you are driving or chartering a car, you can visit them in one day · Highlights of the Sima Guang Shrine scenic area: Apricot Blossom Stele, Yuqing Chan Temple (not photographed), and the Sima Guang Spirit Way Stele ✅ Tomb of Sima Guang, Song Dynasty, National Heritage Site (Batch 3) The central part of the tomb area is the shrine, the west is the cemetery, and the east is the Yuqing Chan Temple. There are 4 existing tombstones and 13 burial mounds in the cemetery. There are 8 stone statues on both sides in front of Sima Guang's tomb, and 20 stone statues on both sides in front of his son Sima Kang's tomb. There are 30 existing stone tablets from the Song, Jin, Yuan, Ming, Qing, and Republic of China eras. Additionally, there are 8 stone beasts from the Northern Wei Dynasty. The shrine was built in the Song Dynasty and expanded by Li Zuntang, the magistrate of Xia County, in the 27th year of the Qianlong reign of the Qing Dynasty, with construction completed in the 39th year. It faces south, and along the central axis from south to north are the Apricot Blossom Stele Pavilion, east and west wing rooms, and the shrine. The Apricot Blossom Stele Pavilion currently houses the Apricot Blossom Stele, the stele for the reconstruction of the Apricot Blossom Stele Pavilion, and the tombstone of Sima Yi. The Apricot Blossom Stele was erected in the 3rd year of the Yuanyou reign of the Song Dynasty and was destroyed during the Shaosheng reign. In the 8th year of the Huangtong reign of the Jin Dynasty, Wang Tingzhi, the magistrate of Xia County, found the broken stele under an apricot tree. Admiring Sima Guang's political achievements and character, he found the original text at the homes of Sima Guang's great-grandnephews, Sima Zuo and Sima Tong, and had it re-engraved in the 9th year of the Huangtong reign, naming it the Apricot Blossom Stele. The stele is made of bluestone, rectangular in shape, with 68 lines of text across four stones, 41 characters per full line, recording Sima Guang's life achievements and profound knowledge. Yuqing Chan Temple is the incense temple for Sima Guang's ancestral cemetery. The existing Mahavira Hall is an original structure from the Song Dynasty. The Mahavira Hall faces south and has a brick foundation 0.88m high. It is 5 bays wide and 3 rafters deep, with a single-eave hanging mountain roof. The beam structure consists of 6-rafter purlins with 4-rafter beams paired with front breast-shaped beams spanning the eaves, supported by 3 columns. The column heads feature 4-bracket sets with a single cantilever arm, with no inter-column bracket sets. The central bay of the front eaves has double-leaf wooden doors with a plaque above inscribed with "Bie You Tian Di" (A World Apart). The side bays have straight-latticed windows and square stone column bases. Inside the hall are 19 colored sculptures, including the Buddhas of the Three Ages, Manjushri, Samantabhadra, and the Sixteen Arhats, as well as 1 wooden sculpture of a Dharma protector Vajra. All are original works from the Song Dynasty, repainted in the 5th year of the Qianlong reign of the Qing Dynasty. The Stele of Loyal and Pure Virtue is made of bluestone with a dragon-headed top and a tortoise-shaped base. Also known as the Sima Guang Spirit Way Stele, its header is inscribed with the seal script "Stele of Loyal and Pure Virtue." The title reads: "Spirit Way Stele of the Late Song Dynasty Justice Grand Master, Minister of the Left of the Department of State Affairs, concurrently Vice Minister of the Secretariat, Supreme Pillar of State, Founding Duke of Henei Commandery, with 4,100 households of fief and 1,500 households of honorary fief, posthumously awarded Grand Preceptor and Duke of Wen, with the posthumous name Wenzheng, Lord Sima." The inscription is in regular script, totaling 2,266 characters. The header was written by Emperor Zhezong of Song (Zhao Xu), the text by Su Shi, and the calligraphy by Zhu Shichang. The stele header and base are original Song Dynasty works, while the stele body was reproduced by Hedong Censor Zhu Shichang in the 3rd year of the Jiajing reign of the Ming Dynasty. ✅ Pagoda of Chan Master Fanzhou, Tang Dynasty, National Heritage Site (Batch 5) Built in the 9th year of the Zhenyuan reign of the Tang Dynasty, with the tomb inscription engraved in the 2nd year of the Changqing reign. The north side of the pagoda body is embedded with a 1m high "Tomb Inscription of the Late Great Virtuous Chan Master Fanzhou of Baoguo Temple, Anyi County." It consists of three parts: the pagoda base, the pagoda body, and the pagoda spire, with each part accounting for about one-third of the total height. The pagoda base is circular and tapers slightly from bottom to top. The lower part of the pagoda body is a waist-constricted Sumeru pedestal. Above it is the pagoda body, surrounded by 8 square brick columns that divide the body into 8 bays. The upper pagoda eaves extend outward with corbelled brickwork, and the outer edges of the two layers are carved into imitation wood-structure rafters, flying rafters, and drip tiles. The pagoda spire is decorated with stacked elements including a binding band, an inverted bowl, inverted lotus petals, upright lotus petals, and a precious pearl. Sima Guang Shrine scenic area

Standing in the square of Sima Wengong Shrine, the Stele Pavilion preserves a remarkable meeting of Song-dynasty heritage and Ming-dynasty craftsmanship. First established in the early Jiajing reign of the Ming dynasty, the pavilion was later rebuilt in brick, crowned by a double-eaved roof with sweeping hip-and-gable lines. Within it stands a monumental stele nearly nine metres tall, its imposing scale reflecting the esteem in which the celebrated Song historian and statesman Sima Guang was held. The stele’s history is especially fascinating. Its carved crown and massive bixi tortoise pedestal are original Northern Song relics, while the six characters “忠清粹德之碑” — commemorating loyalty, integrity and exemplary virtue — were written in imperial seal script by Emperor Zhezong of Song. The stele body and inscription were reproduced during the Ming dynasty, with the text recarved from an earlier rubbing of the original composition by Su Shi. Thus, the monument preserves more than a single historical moment: original Song-dynasty components and Ming-dynasty reproductions coexist within one remarkable structure. Look closely, and the pavilion becomes a lesson in how history survives. Stone, calligraphy and architecture carry memories across centuries, even as later generations restore, reproduce and reinterpret the legacy of those who came before. 📍 Stele Pavilion, Sima Wengong Shrine, Xia County, Yuncheng City, Shanxi Province, China 🇨🇳 📸 Photography Tip: Photograph the pavilion from a low angle to convey the monument’s impressive height. Include the roofline and bixi pedestal in separate detail shots to highlight the contrast between architectural form and ancient stone carving. ✨ Signature Feeling: Standing before a monument where the craftsmanship of different dynasties preserves one enduring legacy. Dynasties change, stone endures, and the words of history continue to speak.

After a thousand years, it has been restored. The inscription is weathered and profound. If you love calligraphy and history, be sure to take a close look—the atmosphere will transport you straight back to the Song Dynasty. 2. Wengong Ancestral Hall An antique hall housing statues of five people from four generations of the Sima family, with a neat and symmetrical layout. When Sima Guang is mentioned, everyone thinks of the story of the 7-year-old who smashed a vat to save a friend. But few people know that this renowned Northern Song Dynasty chancellor's hometown is right here at the Sima Wengong Memorial Hall on Mingtiao Ridge in Xia County, Yuncheng. This is also his final resting place. I am a travel blogger deeply rooted in Shanxi, and today I will take you into this ancient memorial hall that has accumulated thousands of years of history. If you are driving, navigate to Xiaochao Village in Shuitou Town, Xia County. As soon as you enter the scenic area square, a tall bronze statue of Sima Guang comes into view. The numbers on the pedestal hold deep meaning, commemorating the 19 years he spent compiling the "Zizhi Tongjian" (Comprehensive Mirror in Aid of Governance). My tour route avoids backtracking: Bronze Statue Square > Apricot Blossom Stele Pavilion > Wengong Memorial Hall > Yuqing Zen Temple > Sushui Academy > Sima Family Ancestral Cemetery. It takes about 2 hours to stroll through at a leisurely pace. Passing through the mountain gate, you first arrive at the Apricot Blossom Stele Pavilion. This stele was written by Su Dongpo. After being damaged and later unearthed under an apricot tree, it was named the Apricot Blossom Stele. On the mottled stone, you can still glimpse the spirit of the calligraphy from that time. Walking further back is the Wengong Memorial Hall, where statues of four generations of Sima ancestors are enshrined. On the walls are displayed the "Xunjian Shikang" (Admonition on Frugality), Sima Guang's text advising his descendants to be diligent and frugal, which still resonates today. The most surprising part is the Yuqing Zen Temple, which preserves the original Northern Song Dynasty main hall. The painted clay Buddha statues inside have a simple, ancient demeanor, and the thousand-year-old clay sculptures remain vivid—a rare national treasure. Strolling through Sushui Academy, which was once the school where Sima Guang taught local children, and looking at the ancient editions of the "Zizhi Tongjian" in the display cases, you can almost see him studying with a warning pillow and working at his desk to compile history. Walking to the ancestral cemetery at the northernmost end of the park, you'll find dense ancient cypresses. Stone figures and horses stand quietly on both sides of the spirit way, and earthen mounds lie peacefully among the pines and cypresses. Sima Guang lived an honest life and requested a simple burial before he passed away. This quiet cemetery is the best testament to his integrity. After visiting, you will understand that Sima Guang was not just the witty child who smashed a vat, but also a virtuous official who served four dynasties and never stopped writing. If you come to Yuncheng, you might as well take a walk here and touch the real history behind the textbooks. What other cultural and historical sites in southern Shanxi would you like to learn about? If you want an easy, short hike that won't tire you out and usually has few visitors, Yaotai Mountain in Xia County, Yuncheng, Shanxi, is just right⛰️. This local, little‑known healing landscape is a favorite among residents: no long travel, no intense climbing, and you can easily reach a high vantage point for panoramic views, making it perfect for a weekend unwind. Yaotai Mountain, also called Wuxian Mountain, is one of Xia County's traditional "eight ancient scenic spots." It backs onto the rolling Zhongtiao Mountains and sits beside the clear Baisha River. Historically it's been a popular place to climb, enjoy the moon, and quietly pray, and it has long cultural stories that add depth to its elegant scenery. Whether you're taking kids out, traveling as a couple, or seeking solo stress relief, it fits well. The scenic area is very convenient to reach. It’s located in Yaofeng Town, Xia County, only about 2 km from the county seat, so whether you drive or take a short trip you won't waste time on the road. Opening hours vary by season. The busy season runs from early April through October and is 7:00 AM–8:00 PM, with climbing stopped at 7:00 PM. The low season, from November through March, is a bit shorter: it opens at 7:30 AM and closes at 6:00 PM, and you can't start climbing after 5:00 PM. Plan your visit accordingly. Ticket prices are very affordable: adult tickets are CNY 20, students get half price at CNY 10, and children under 1.2m, people 60 and older, military personnel, and credentialed journalists enter free. Parking at the scenic area is also free, making the value excellent and ideal for everyday outings✅. You can choose how to get there. If you drive, navigate to Yaotai Mountain Scenic Area—there's a spacious parking lot at the foot of the mountain with plenty of spaces. If you don't want to drive, a taxi from Xia County's town center takes only around 10–15 minutes to reach the entrance, so getting there is hassle free. The whole trail is gentle and easy. The path is paved with stone steps and isn't steep, so elders and children can complete it comfortably. The typical route follows the entrance past Taoran Pavilion, Boya Pavilion, and Leishen Cave, gradually ascending to Wangyue Pavilion and finally reaching the iconic nine‑story Wenfeng Tower at the summit to complete the trip. The pavilions along the way are perfect spots to rest, so walking slowly and sightseeing is especially pleasant. The 43‑meter Wenfeng Tower is the main highlight and a must‑check point on Yaotai Mountain. The nine‑story ancient tower is full of classical charm and blends Buddhist and Taoist cultural elements. From the top you can overlook the entire city of Xia County—it's a wide, soothing view and every snapshot looks like a great photo. I highly recommend visiting between 3:00–5:00 PM, when the light is soft and comfortable—not too hot or harsh—making photos look great. In the evening you may also experience the famous "Yaotai night moon" scene, with gentle breezes and peaceful moonlight that creates an incredible atmosphere🌙. You don't need to rush your visit—walk slowly and enjoy the scenery. A full visit takes about 1–2 hours, which is just enough to stretch your legs and fully relax, leaving daily fatigue and anxiety behind. As a lesser‑known scenic area, it avoids crowds and overcommercialization. The quiet woods and fresh air make you feel far from the city noise right away. At the top you can tie prayer ribbons—many locals come to make wishes and pray for safety and healing. A few practical tips: temperatures in the mountains can drop in the evening, so bring a light jacket. The trail is gentle and easy to walk, so you don't need special gear—travel light. Walk slowly and take lots of photos to fully immerse yourself in the scenery. You don't have to go far to find beauty—this nearby mountain landscape is healing enough. On a free weekend, consider a trip to Yaotai Mountain to climb, breathe fresh air, and relax; a simple short trip can heal a long stretch of fatigue.

I am a frequent business traveler, covering the entire Shanxi province, every city and county. I am always on the move, staying in different places. I have stayed in so many hotels that I usually just sleep and leave, rarely thinking about writing a review. This time, I stayed at the Home Inn Neo in Xiaxian, and I was pleasantly surprised by the overall experience, so I decided to jot down my honest thoughts. Xiaxian is a small county with deep historical roots. It was called Anyi in ancient times and was the capital of the Xia Dynasty; the legend of Yu the Great taming the floods happened right here. The hotel is right next to a city park, so after finishing my work, I would go for a walk in the evening. The sculpture of Yu the Great in the park is quite grand, and standing next to it was really moving. You can see Yaotai Mountain in the distance with a pagoda on top, and the characters "Wuxian Mountain" are clearly visible on the mountainside. With blue skies and green mountains, this small city has both, and the historical atmosphere is palpable. Walking on the streets here feels very refreshing. Entering the hotel lobby, the first impression was that it was bright and clean. There was also a cute little blue cartoon figurine. The check-in process at the front desk was fast, without any unnecessary small talk or hesitation, which is a big plus for those of us who are always rushing to market. The room has the familiar Home Inn style, with all the necessary facilities. The mattress was comfortable, and the desk was spacious enough, making it convenient for me to organize client data and check documents when I returned to the hotel at night. Surprisingly, the hotel's public areas were quite impressive; you can tell that a lot of thought went into the decor. The breakfast was the most satisfying part. The restaurant environment is better than many other county hotels, with blue mosaic walls and warm pendant lights, creating a great dining atmosphere. The breakfast variety is solid: milk, eggs, pumpkin, purple sweet potato, and red dates are all available, along with interesting chocolate flower rolls. There was a long row of hot and cold dishes, including ham, shredded kelp, and braised pork with green beans—over a dozen options, all hot and appetizing. Having a hot, hearty breakfast in the morning gives me plenty of energy for business throughout the day. The laundry room is something long-term business travelers really need. It is fully equipped with washer-dryers, hangers, and an ironing board. After running around all day and sweating, I can just throw my clothes in at night, wash and dry them, and head out clean the next day. I don't have to accumulate a pile of dirty laundry to take home, which solves our biggest headache when traveling. There is also a business lounge area with a large curved sofa and nice colorful circular decorations on the wall. Sometimes when I am waiting for someone and do not want to stay in my room, I can come here to sit, have some water, and take a break. It is very relaxing. Traveling as much as I do, I do not have luxurious requirements for accommodation. I just hope for cleanliness, peace of mind, a good night's sleep, and a hot meal in the morning. This Home Inn Neo hit all those points, and in many ways, it exceeded my expectations. I will definitely choose this place again next time I am in Xiaxian for business. If you are coming to Xiaxian for business or leisure, you should give it a try—it is highly recommended.

After visiting historical sites for a long time, I prefer going to less crowded, non-tourist national heritage sites, as the experience is much better. This time, I visited Xia County in the suburbs of Yuncheng, Shanxi. It's only about a half-hour drive from downtown Yuncheng, making it perfect for a road trip. In recent years, the historical tour routes in Wanrong, Jishan, and Xinjiang, north of Yuncheng, have become increasingly well-developed. However, Xia County, which is closer to Yuncheng, remains very niche—so much so that it's hard to find a public restroom during a day trip. However, when I stood quietly in front of the exquisite ancient architecture, these minor inconveniences didn't matter anymore. Historical site recommendations: P1–P3, Shangfeng Goddess Temple: As soon as I walked in, I was amazed by the magnificence of the Ming Dynasty incense pavilion and the pavilion-style colored sculptures in the Yuan Dynasty Goddess Hall. P4–P6, Qiangxia Guandi Temple: Known as the rural Guandi temple to visit, this is a complex of Ming and Qing Dynasty architecture. P7–P9, Sima Wengong Shrine: The Yuqing Zen Temple inside is the highlight, featuring rare official-style architecture from the Northern Song Dynasty. P10, Xia County Confucian Temple: A model of Ming Dynasty architecture that survived the Jiajing earthquake. It features a seven-bay wide facade, with extremely ornate column-head dougong brackets and glazed gable decorations. P11–P12, Duiyundong: A Taoist architectural marvel nestled in the loess gullies. It combines houses built on top of houses, caves hidden within caves, and the cradle of the revolution in southern Shanxi, blending nature and culture. P13–P15, Qiu Family Stone Archway: A collection of stone carving art from the Tongzhi and Guangxu eras of the Qing Dynasty. It consists of a stone archway and five stele pavilions, featuring exquisite carved couplets and reliefs. P16, Dayang Taishan Temple: A Yuan Dynasty original main hall hidden within the village.

⑩ Sima Guang Ancestral Hall On Mingtiao Hill, towering pines and cypresses stand tall, their thousand-year-old cultural heritage flowing silently within. The tombs of Sima Guang and his ancestors and descendants stand solemnly, their stone beasts silent, guarding the enduring achievements of Sima Wenzheng Gong. The most moving feature of the ancestral hall is undoubtedly the "Stele of Loyalty, Integrity, and Pure Virtue," personally inscribed by Su Shi. In his more than two thousand characters of regular script, Su Zizhan etched the integrity of his close friend onto the stone, each character as powerful as thunder, revealing the profound depth of their friendship. Turning past the stele pavilion, the Yuqing Zen Temple reveals a different world. Inside, a large Song Dynasty painted clay Buddha sits serenely on a lotus pedestal, the Arhats displaying various expressions, their robes exuding a simple, ancient Zen spirit. Here, the weight of history and the tranquility of the Buddhist realm blend quietly, allowing visitors to find peace while paying homage to the sages of the past. ⑩ Sima Guang Ancestral Hall On Mingtiao Hill, towering pines and cypresses stand tall, their thousand-year-old cultural heritage flowing silently. The countryside of Xia County, Yuncheng, Shanxi, is never short of understated ancient architectural treasures. In Shangfeng Village, Nianzhang Town, lies a little-known national treasure temple—the Shangfeng Shengmu Temple. It has no bustling crowds or elaborate commercial packaging. Quietly standing among the village homes, it preserves the authentic Yuan and Ming dynasty architecture and stunning suspended clay sculptures, making it a niche spot cherished by ancient architecture enthusiasts. It quietly tells the story of over 700 years of local culture and heritage. Shangfeng Shengmu Temple is located in the heart of Shangfeng Ancient Village, Nianzhang Town, Xia County. Surrounded by simple farmhouses and green trees, it sits on flat, open land in a peaceful and serene environment. The temple was originally built in the Song dynasty and has been repaired multiple times during the Yuan, Ming, and Qing dynasties. Today, it fully retains the Yuan dynasty main hall and the Ming dynasty incense pavilion, two core ancient structures, making it a living architectural fossil spanning three dynasties. The entire temple faces south with a compact and elegant layout. It sheds the grandeur of famous temples and gains the rustic simplicity and warmth of rural ancient architecture, blending the charm of everyday life with historic grace, creating a particularly soothing atmosphere. The main travel highlight of this niche temple is the rare Yuan dynasty architecture and exquisite suspended sculptures. The most precious Shengmu Hall was built in the third year of the Yuan dynasty’s Yanyou era, over 700 years ago, and is an authentic original Yuan dynasty structure. The main hall features a single-eave hanging gable roof with a simple and grand design, embodying the bold and unrefined style of Yuan architecture. Inside, the rare octagonal stone pillars stand straight and tall, with clean lines on the capitals. The beam and frame structure is concise and sturdy, with four purlins arranged along the eaves, perfectly restoring the Yuan dynasty wood construction techniques. It is a valuable specimen for studying Yuan dynasty architecture in southern Shanxi. The most stunning feature is the suspended palace-style sculptures on the two gable walls inside the hall, which are the temple’s highlight. The delicate and intricate pavilion shapes float in midair on the walls, with layered, exquisite, and translucent details that are complex and lifelike. Paired with the rustic dragon patterns, landscapes, and figure paintings on the walls, though weathered by centuries of wind and rain, they remain vivid and lively, fully showcasing the beauty of Chinese three-dimensional sculpture. The Ming dynasty eight-trigram incense pavilion in front of the hall is also a major attraction. The pavilion is transparent and delicate, with glazed edges in warm colors. The bracket sets are neatly arranged, and the shape is elegant and lively. It contrasts with the heavy and rustic Yuan dynasty main hall, combining the architectural aesthetics of the Yuan and Ming dynasties perfectly with one simple and one intricate structure. For centuries, this ancient temple has accumulated rich local folk culture from southern Shanxi. Shengmu Temple has long been a sacred place for locals to pray for blessings and protection. In the hearts of villagers, the Shengmu protects the area’s favorable weather and seasonal peace. For hundreds of years, generations of villagers have guarded the ancient temple and kept the incense burning. During festivals, the village holds simple sacrificial and blessing ceremonies, continuing the pure folk beliefs. It is not only an ancient building but also a spiritual symbol of stability and continuity for Shangfeng Ancient Village, carrying the most authentic folk cultural heritage of southern Shanxi’s countryside. Finally, here is a practical travel tip. Shangfeng Shengmu Temple is a free national protected site with no commercial consumption. It is quiet and niche, suitable for ancient architecture lovers, short study trips, and travelers who enjoy slow, relaxing visits. The site is suitable for visiting year-round. In spring and summer, green trees surround the ancient buildings, creating an especially peaceful atmosphere. A full visit takes about an hour. It is recommended to slow down and carefully observe the Yuan dynasty woodwork details, exquisite suspended sculptures, and ancient painted murals to fully immerse yourself in the craftsmanship of the ancient architecture. Please be sure to protect the cultural relics during your visit—do not touch or carve the ancient sites to preserve this precious Yuan and Ming heritage. One courtyard holds three dynasties, one sculpture reveals a millennium. Shangfeng Shengmu Temple holds the purest beauty of rural ancient architecture. Avoid the crowds and come here to encounter the understated yet breathtaking charm of a thousand-year-old heritage.

When it comes to Sima Guang, everyone knows the childhood story of breaking the water jar and is familiar with the timeless masterpiece Zizhi Tongjian. However, many don’t know that the hometown of this famous Northern Song statesman is in Xia County, Yuncheng, Shanxi. The Sima Wengong Memorial, located in Xiao Zhao Village, Shuitou Town, overlooks the mountains and rivers and preserves a rich literary heritage. It is a rare and well-preserved ancestral shrine of a Northern Song minister in northern China and a cultural and historical sanctuary that has accumulated over a thousand years. The memorial backs onto Emei Ridge and faces Zhongtiao Mountain, adjacent to the clear Su River. Surrounded by mountains and water, the terrain is open. The entire scenic area covers more than 100 acres, far from city noise, with lush forests and towering ancient cypresses, creating a quiet and solemn environment. This is the ancestral tomb and exclusive worship hall of Sima Guang. Built in the Northern Song dynasty and renovated during the Ming and Qing dynasties, it has stood steadily for over a thousand years. Today, it is a national 4A-level scenic spot and a key national cultural relic protection unit, a true treasure of Shanxi’s cultural heritage. As the core travel highlight, the ancient shrine is filled with top-tier ancient architecture and cultural relics. The scenic area is divided into four main sections: the burial ground, the ancestral hall, Yuqing Zen Temple, and Su River Academy. The layout is complete and grand. The most precious is the Great Buddha Hall of Yuqing Zen Temple, one of the few surviving official Northern Song wooden halls in Shanxi. It has withstood nearly a thousand years of weather without changing its original appearance. The beams and frames are simple yet majestic, fully showcasing the dignified and elegant style of Song dynasty architecture. The original Northern Song polychrome sculptures inside the shrine are exceptional, fully preserving statues of five generations of Sima Guang’s ancestors. The figures’ expressions are lifelike and the clothing details delicate. After a thousand years, the colors remain warm and vivid. The most famous feature of the scenic area is the Apricot Blossom Stele, the shrine’s treasure. It was written by the great literary master Su Shi, with every character powerful and resonant. It records Sima Guang’s lifetime achievements and spirit, making it a rare masterpiece of both calligraphy and historical inscription. The plaques on the halls were penned by the Qing dynasty calligrapher Fu Shan, whose vigorous brushwork adds a scholarly and ancient charm to the shrine. The profound cultural heritage is the most moving aspect of the Sima Wengong Memorial. Sima Guang served four dynasties, known for his integrity and rigorous scholarship. He spent 19 years compiling Zizhi Tongjian, leaving an immortal historical work for future generations. This land is his hometown and a testament to the Sima family’s tradition of farming and scholarship passed down through generations. Over centuries, Wengong’s honest family values, dedication to learning, and patriotism have been passed down through the shrine, steles, and academy. Walking here, you touch not only ancient architecture but also the traditional Chinese culture of valuing learning, virtue, integrity, and kindness upheld for thousands of years. Here is a practical travel tip suitable for all visitors. The scenic area is free from excessive commercialization, quiet and perfect for slow exploration and study, suitable for all ages. Spring and autumn are the best seasons to visit. In spring, the greenery is fresh, and in autumn, the ancient cypresses are lush, creating a perfect atmosphere for photos. Take your time when visiting. About 1 hour is just right for a full tour. Focus on the Northern Song wooden structures, ancient polychrome statues, and the Apricot Blossom Stele to fully immerse yourself in the historical depth. Please respect the cultural relics during your visit by not touching or carving on the ancient sites, and quietly appreciate the shrine’s tranquility and weighty history. The memorial is close to Yuncheng and Xia County urban areas, making it ideal for a weekend short trip or family study tour. If you love cultural heritage and immersive historical travel, this place is definitely worth a special visit.

Getting to Duiyun Cave in Xià County was a bit of a hassle. First, I took bus 108 from Yuncheng to Wenxi County and got off at Duiyun Village, which is still 5 kilometers away from the attraction. Just as I was feeling frustrated, a local riding an electric bike passed by and kindly offered to take me near his home, then contacted an elderly man driving a tricycle who brought me to a spot about 200 meters from the scenic area. Once again, I was deeply touched by the simplicity and kindness of the people of Yuncheng. In front of the mountain gate stands a more than 500-year-old soapberry tree, its twisted branches shading the sky. Entering the gate, I climbed the steps slowly, afraid of missing anything. Indeed, every turn revealed a different scene. Since there are many attractions, I won’t describe them all, but will focus on a few highlights. First, I visited the Fengxian Shrine. It’s small but very solemn, dedicated to “Changchun Zhenren” Qiu Chuji. Further up is the Niuwang Shrine. The name sounds rustic but reflects the heartfelt wishes of old farming families. The Ox King, Horse King, and Medicine King are enshrined together, collectively called the “Three Kings Shrine.” Farmers driving their livestock would stop here to rest, burn incense, and pray for the prosperity of their animals. Inside, the dim light makes the statues’ faces somewhat blurred, but the simple devotion feels especially genuine in the shadows. Next door is the Dashi Shrine, dedicated to the White-Clad Dashi. Originally a Buddhist figure, he enjoys worship here in the Taoist temple, showing the inclusive nature of local beliefs. Walking among these shrines, I felt like courtyards nested within courtyards and stone steps connected to more steps. Without signposts, one could easily get lost. This is the charm of Duiyun Cave — due to the steep terrain and precious land, later buildings were constructed atop existing roofs, creating the marvel of “courtyards within courtyards, caves within caves.” Turning into a quiet side path, I reached an inconspicuous small door with a sign reading “Secret Printing Factory.” I was stunned, then remembered that Duiyun Cave is not only a Taoist sacred site but also the “Cradle of the Southern Shanxi Revolution.” Bending down to enter the low cave, the light suddenly dimmed. The cave is small, barely enough for seven or eight people to turn around. In 1922, revolutionary pioneer Jia Kangjie used this place, under the cover of the Taoist temple, to establish a “People’s School,” turning this place of quiet cultivation into a platform for spreading new ideas. Later, the Communist Party’s Hedong Special Committee was also founded here. This tiny cave became the heart of secret leaflet printing and revolutionary planning. Coming out of that weighty history, my emotions were hard to calm. Continuing up the stone steps, I saw the San’guan Hall, dedicated to the Three Officials of Heaven, Earth, and Water, Taoist deities who grant blessings, forgive sins, and relieve disasters. Higher up, the terrain opened up more. The Sanqing Hall stood prominently at the highest point, enshrining the Three Pure Ones — Yuanshi, Lingbao, and Daode — the highest deities in Taoism. The final destination was the towering Beiji Platform at the top of the complex, where ancient Taoist priests observed the stars at night. Ancient poets praised the eight scenic spots of Duiyun, one being the “Lone Tower Standing Tall.” Standing on this high platform, looking at the vast sky and gentle clouds, and the silent mountains, I did not feel lonely. Beneath my feet, the twelve layers of courtyards hide immortals and heroes alike; there are bells and chimes for blessings, and sparks of revolution. Together, they form Duiyun Cave — half a place of transcendental purity, half a place of worldly passion; half a home for immortals, half a monument to humanity.

Driving into Wangjiahe in Sijiao Town, the noise is blocked by layers of mountains. The foothills of Zhongtiao Mountain stretch continuously, with forests spreading out in endless green. The Wangjiahe stream flows slowly along the valley, its clear shallow waters passing over green stones, all the way to Hengze Qitang Manor. This manor hidden in the mountains and forests is free of elaborate decoration. It embraces the wild with simple architecture, blending nature, living, and local life into a peaceful retreat at the foot of Zhongtiao Mountain. The manor spreads along the riverbank, with more than 40 acres of land unfolding gently along the mountain slope. The designer follows the principle of harmony with nature. The buildings do not compete with the mountains in height. The pale white walls and warm natural wood tones blend with the surrounding dense green forest. Large panoramic floor-to-ceiling windows are Qitang’s most charming feature. Every guest room opens toward the forest. Sitting by the window during the day, you can see the layers of green mountains and willow branches hanging over the riverbank. At dusk, the forest is covered in soft mist, mountain shadows deepen, and the warm indoor light meets the quiet outdoors. The tension of city life slowly eases the moment you open the window to the mountain view. The manor’s courtyard is arranged with care. Stone paths wind through lawns and flower beds. White canopied pavilions are scattered among the trees, with curtains gently swaying in the breeze. A mist system releases soft water vapor that lingers around the plants. Walking through it feels like stepping into a secret misty realm. A neatly planned farming experience garden stands out on one side. Vegetable plots are divided in order, with greens and melons growing freely. Unlike ornamental landscapes, this farmland retains a rustic charm. Visitors can walk among the rows, identify crops, and enjoy the fun of picking. Nearby, a stream babbles, and several tall trees spread dense canopies. Cool breezes linger under the trees, offering shade even at midday in summer. Sijiao is known as a natural oxygen bar. At an altitude of 1,200 meters, the mountain area has a very high forest coverage rate, and the air is filled with a continuous stream of negative oxygen ions. In midsummer, while the heat waves rise below the mountain, the temperature inside Qitang Manor stays around 22 degrees Celsius year-round. At night, the temperature drops even further. No air conditioning is needed—just an open window lets the mountain breeze, carrying the coolness of plants and streams, flow into the room. Late at night, there is no traffic noise, only the gentle sound of flowing water and insects chirping in turn. This unique white noise of the mountains soothes countless restless guests. Qitang’s local life is found in the eco-friendly dining area. The manor insists on natural health flavors, sourcing most ingredients from nearby fields and forests. Fresh vegetables picked in the morning, free-range poultry from the mountains, and fresh river seafood are simply cooked to preserve the original taste of the food. The outdoor dining area is the manor’s most popular spot. During the day, it’s perfect for friends and family to chat over tea. At dusk, lights come on one by one, and the aroma of barbecue drifts in the breeze. People gather around the table, enjoying mountain cuisine while gazing at the twilight mountains. For those who prefer quiet, there are waterside tea seats where you can brew a pot of local Sijiao black tea. The tea is smooth and fragrant, with the distant mountains and flowing water forming the perfect tea scenery. The manor is more than just a place to stay; it’s a complete rural lifestyle scene. In the morning, you can stroll along the Wangjiahe riverside trail and watch the mist slowly dissipate in the valley. In the afternoon, visit the surrounding tea gardens, where terraced fields stretch along the hillside and a faint tea fragrance drifts in the wind. Children can play in the shallow river, searching for pebbles and getting close to the water. Adults can temporarily break free from work constraints, without chasing schedules, and leisurely spend some time as they wish. Here, there are no noisy crowds. The pace is set by each visitor. There’s no need to travel far to find scenery. At Qitang, you can look up to see green mountains, listen closely to flowing water, and have farmland beneath your feet. Hengze Qitang Manor—“Qitang” means settling the body and “Tang” means embracing the heart. The freedom and peace people seek in the mountains are all hidden in this manor by the foot of Zhongtiao Mountain and beside the river. Night slowly covers the valley, and lights twinkle among the trees. The evening breeze brushes the treetops, bringing the scent of earth and flowers. Many people still miss Qitang after leaving, missing the undisturbed quiet and the green mountains visible from the window. After long journeys in the world, everyone needs a mountain retreat like this, waiting for their return and reunion with the breeze, mountains, and water.

The "Sparks of Innovation" exhibition hall at the Shanxi Museum is the first unit of the "Porcelain Garden of Art" exhibition. It primarily showcases the early development of Chinese porcelain from proto-celadon to mature porcelain, covering pottery and glazed artifacts from the Xia, Shang, Zhou, and Han dynasties. These early pottery and glazed artifacts represent an important stage in our understanding of the evolution of Chinese porcelain, and these exquisite artifacts offer a glimpse into a different process of civilization. ✅Exhibition Highlights 📌Proto-celadon Specimens: The hall displays fragments and complete artifacts of proto-celadon from the Xia and Shang dynasties, such as celadon zun (wine vessels) and celadon jars. These artifacts demonstrate the simple style of the early stages of porcelain production, with glazes mostly bluish-green or yellowish-green and a relatively coarse body. They are important material evidence for understanding the origins of Chinese porcelain. 📌Han Dynasty Pottery and Glazed Artifacts: Han Dynasty pottery and glazed artifacts are the highlight of the exhibition, including pottery figurines, pottery stoves, pottery wells, and other daily necessities, as well as models of pottery buildings and boats. These artifacts are not only vividly shaped but also reflect the social life, funerary customs, and craftsmanship of the Han Dynasty. Who would have thought that in a celebrity shrine, there would also be a Buddhist hall housing a thousand-year-old Song Dynasty Buddha statue? The Sima Wengong Shrine (also known as the Sima Guang Tomb/Shrine) is located in Xia County, Yuncheng City, Shanxi Province. It is the ancestral shrine and tomb of Sima Guang, a historian and politician of the Northern Song Dynasty. In 1988, it was designated as a national key cultural relic protection unit. Inside, there is the Yuqing Chan Temple, a temple for incense offerings built under the supervision of Sima Guang. Later, it was granted the name "Yuqing Chan Temple" by Emperor Shenzong and was elevated to an officially recognized Chan temple. Not only is the architecture a surviving example of Northern Song official style, but the Three Buddhas, six Bodhisattvas, and one Vajra statue inside are all relics from the Northern Song Dynasty.
