🇬🇧 One tip that saved us money while travelling around the UK 🚆💰 If you’re planning to explore the UK by train, here’s one tip I wish I had known sooner: Get a Railcard! My husband and I got the Two Together Railcard, and it has saved us a lot of money. It costs £35 for one year, and as long as the two registered people travel together, you get 1/3 off most train tickets across Great Britain. After just a few longer journeys, it had already paid for itself. We use it for almost every trip, whether it’s a day trip to places like York, Durham or Whitby, or longer journeys across England and Scotland. Which Railcard is right for you? There isn’t just one Railcard! Whitby quickly became one of my favorite day trips in North Yorkshire. It’s a charming seaside town full of history, dramatic scenery, and great food. We arrived around noon and headed straight to Magpie Café for lunch. Whitby is famous for serving some of the best fish and chips in England, and Magpie Café is one of its most iconic restaurants. The queue for the restaurant was quite long, so we decided to order from the takeaway instead. The prices are a little cheaper, but keep in mind that it doesn’t come with lemon, and the mushy peas is charged separately. If you’re planning to eat in the restaurant, I’d recommend making a reservation in advance. Otherwise, the takeaway is a great option, just be mindful of the seagulls. The fish and chips definitely lived up to the reputation! The fish was incredibly fresh, with a light, crispy batter and a large, thick fillet that was perfectly flaky inside. After lunch, we walked along West Pier all the way to Whitby Harbour West Lighthouse. The views over the North Sea are beautiful, and along the pier we saw families and children catching crabs using buckets, nets, and crab lines that are sold in many of the local shops. It’s a fun local tradition to watch. There are also plenty of places selling ice cream, fudge, and other traditional seaside sweets. On our way back, we walked up to the Captain Cook Memorial. James Cook began his maritime career in Whitby as a young apprentice, learning the navigation skills that would later lead him to map Newfoundland in Canada, circumnavigate New Zealand, chart Australia’s east coast, and become one of Britain’s greatest explorers. The viewpoint here is fantastic, you can see the harbour, the North Sea, and the impressive ruins of Whitby Abbey across the town. Don’t miss the photo opportunity at the nearby Whalebone Arch. Next, we crossed the River Esk and explored the charming Church Street, one of the prettiest streets in Whitby. It’s lined with independent shops selling local crafts, Whitby Jet jewelry, antiques, sweets, and unique souvenirs. You’ll also notice countless references to Dracula. Author Bram Stoker visited Whitby in the 1890s and used the town as the setting for key scenes in his famous novel. In the story, Dracula arrives in Whitby by ship before making his way to the Abbey. Today, the town fully embraces its gothic connection with themed shops, ghost tours, and an annual Goth Weekend festival. At the end of Church Street, we climbed the famous 199 Steps to St Mary’s Church and Whitby Abbey. The steps themselves have become one of Whitby’s most iconic landmarks, and the view from the top is well worth the climb. Whitby Abbey has an incredible history. The original monastery was founded in 657 AD by Saint Hilda, became one of the most important religious sites in Anglo-Saxon England, was destroyed during Viking raids, and later rebuilt by the Normans. The magnificent ruins you see today date from the medieval abbey, which was abandoned during King Henry VIII’s Dissolution of the Monasteries in the 16th century. The dramatic ruins overlooking the sea later inspired Bram Stoker while writing Dracula. There is a café and a public toilet near the Abbey, making it a good place to take a short break before exploring further. Tickets can easily be purchased at the entrance if you haven’t booked in advance. After visiting the Abbey, we made our way back down through town and caught the train home. Whitby is the perfect combination of history, coastal scenery, delicious food, and literary legends. It was absolutely worth the trip, and I’d happily come back again. #uktrip Whitby is a great place! The views are stunning, both in the town and also at the Abbey/Castle! On a clear day you can see Norway from Whitby Pier/jetty. There are boat tours, usually 30 minutes, a variety to chose from as well. There is also a Whale watching tour, I didn't go on this as I wasn't aware and you needed to book in advance, but this is must! There is a nice cafe with beautiful views close to the Abbey where you can get stunning pictures. There is a railway and local buses running to places. There are also tour buses that take your sights in Whitby.

The Fisherman's Wife Whitby is a famous seafood restaurant in Whitby, offering fresh seafood dishes alongside stunning sea views. Conveniently located in the heart of the town, it's easy to find and situated along the path to the viewpoint. Be aware that the restaurant gets very crowded during lunch and dinner hours. To avoid long waits, it's recommended to visit around 11 AM for lunch or before 6 PM for dinner. Their signature dish, fish and chips, is a must-try, featuring incredibly fresh fish. Another surprising delight is the baked mussels, which are fresh, plump, and free of any fishy smell—truly a wow moment. Fried shrimp and scallops are also highly recommended. While there are many other dishes to choose from, we couldn't try them all. If you're visiting Whitby, this restaurant is a must-visit for fresh and delicious seafood that won't disappoint.

From York to Edinburgh, you must not miss Whitby. I've had this seaside town on my list for a long time. With its medieval streets and colorful boats, it's a picture-perfect scene. However, Whitby is much more than that. It's the place where Captain Cook set sail, and it flourished during the Age of Exploration. It's also the birthplace of vampire culture. 130 years ago, the Irish novelist Bram Stoker wrote the famous vampire novel *Dracula* in Whitby. · Whitby is not a big town, but half a day is still a rush. From the ancient abbey ruins to the bustling harbor and beach, it was undoubtedly the most memorable part of my trip to England. The weather was also very fitting. The scones here were really delicious! And since this place is also used as a hostel, I recommend it if you want a unique experience. Magpie Cafe is really famous for its fish and chips. My wife and I just returned from a week at the Royal Hideaway and are already planning our next visit. This was my first time on Mexico's east coast after almost 20 years of vacationing on the west coast, primarily in Puerto Vallarta. Given the mixed reviews about the resort, I wasn’t sure what to expect, but I was pleasantly surprised. The staff was outstanding—special thanks to Fernanda, Miriam, Aurelia, and Aurellio! Although this is an adults-only resort, we did see a couple with two very well-behaved teenage girls (probably around 16+). Most of the guests appeared to be English speakers—Americans, Canadians, and British—along with a few Spanish-speaking visitors. The staff's English skills were impressive, with some completely fluent. Fernanda mentioned she took lessons and watched a lot of "Friends" on TV to learn! As others have mentioned, the air conditioning in the rooms isn't the strongest, but my wife and I didn’t have much trouble sleeping after the first night. Anyone requiring a constant 65°F room may want to consider other options. However, after spending our days by the pool and enjoying the resort's activities, we found the room cool and comfortable. I recommend emailing the resort before your arrival to make dinner reservations at their restaurants. We only planned for the first part of our trip and had to take whatever dining times were available later in the week. Fortunately, Fernanda was very helpful in accommodating us. In summary, this resort offers nice amenities and a competent, friendly staff at a reasonable price. If you’re expecting Waldorf Astoria-level luxury, it may not meet your expectations, but for a well-managed, enjoyable experience, this is a great choice.

Whitby is a total vibe—a dramatic, gothic seaside town split by a harbor, with a mix of moody history, killer fish and chips, and stunning coastal views. The whole town is overlooked by the spooky cliffside ruins of Whitby Abbey (the inspiration for Dracula), and you can spend hours wandering the narrow, cobbled streets of the Old Town, climbing the iconic 199 Steps, or checking out the traditional smokehouses. If you want to head inland to Goathland and Pickering, the absolute best way to do it is on the North Yorkshire Moors Railway (NYMR). It’s a vintage steam train that chugs right through the middle of the gorgeous North York Moors National Park. A beautiful place that is very much worth a visit

The crowds. 😭 Because Whitby is so popular, the town can get extremely busy, especially during peak times. For me, the crowds took away some of the charm and made it harder to properly enjoy the scenery. 💡 My tip: If you have more time, consider exploring some of the nearby coastal towns instead. We recently stayed in a gorgeous courtyard suite, which felt timeless and wonderfully comfortable. The hotel itself is a breathtaking, stately property surrounded by magnificent, serene gardens. What we loved: Fantastic Staff: Every single team member was incredibly helpful, making sure no request was too much trouble. Exceptional Concierge Service: Special thanks to James, who went above and beyond to help us plan a day trip to Whitby. He even marked scenic spots for us on a map, making the journey incredibly delightful. The Setting: The grounds are stunning, offering a serene haven and a perfect escape. The only downside: The Shower Setup: The shower is inconveniently placed over the bath, making it impossible to turn on without getting completely soaked. It’s especially bothersome if you don’t plan on washing your hair—a small adjustment or shower caps would be a great improvement. Overall, it was a fantastic experience, and the exceptional service from James and the team made our stay truly unforgettable. We highly recommend it!

Fab day in North Yorkshire

The location is excellent with a bus stop right outside the site offering routes to York, Leeds, Scarborough, and Whitby. The site itself was spotless, and the toilets and showers were absolutely 5-star quality. The wardens were very helpful and friendly. This will definitely be a favorite spot to return to. We've already booked for Christmas 😊

whitby.spent the week here in a beautiful apartment that this amazing balcony with views over to the abbey.heading down town over the bridge to the old town turn right and walk along where you will find these boats,few nice pubs on the way where you can sit outside on a nice day,take in the views and watch the world go by.so much history here plenty to see do.in both old and new town.in old town cobbled streets,quirky shops lead up to steps to the abbey.amazing views from here, wander around the old church yard go inside the church, little shop there also.

I decided this year to plan a trip away for New year/my daughter's birthday. We stayed in Whitby, Scarborough and finished the trip off in Leeds for new years eve/day. I wasn't expecting to see much from our hotel but the fireworks were amazing. Overall, the trip was well-organized and enjoyable. However, changes to the itinerary due to a pub closure caused some issues, particularly with a taxi booking where no record of the change was found. Fortunately, we took the initiative to follow up while sheltering in a local church out of the rain, despite poor signal. Additionally, I initially had to chase up details about the change, as it was not reflected in the app. I only noticed it when I saw the accommodation for the second night had changed while double-checking everything before our departure. The information provided for transfers was also confusing: directions said to call when near but also to be there by 15:30. This might not have been such an issue if we hadn’t been so exhausted from climbing four mountain peaks, stressed about connecting with the accommodation, and dealing with a dying phone. MACS helped when we called but added to the stress by saying the transport was already en route. They didn’t seem to understand our location at the Wain Stones, and we had to explain that we were still on the mountain and unsure how long it would take to descend. Walk times for certain sections were significantly underestimated, which created stress on days where transfers needed to be made. This was part of what contributed to the Wain Stones situation described above, as we ended up “late.” Speaking to other walkers and noting their timing confirmed it wasn’t just that we were slow. Some days were particularly hard—long stretches with a lot of climbing—terms that weren't explicitly conveyed but would have been helpful and clear. Paddy Dillon’s guidebook was also occasionally misleading about difficulty levels. We experienced baking-hot temperatures of around 30 degrees on some days, which made walking unsafe across sections like the moors without shade, prompting an impromptu rest day. MACS didn’t seem to have any advice or guidance for dealing with extreme heat on their site or app. Considering the changing climate, tips or pop-ups reminding people to take precautions could be beneficial, as not everyone might be as cautious as we were. Additionally, suggesting alternative routes for easier options in taxing conditions would be helpful—for instance, the shaded Cinder Track from Whitby to Scarborough could serve as a Plan B for hot weather or fatigue. That being said, the accommodations were first-class, transfers and taxis did occur, and the walking and encounters with other people were an absolute joy. Accommodations booked through MACS felt more reliable than booking them individually, and it was refreshing to speak to an actual person at the MACS office when we needed assistance, which is rare these days. Despite our challenges, we’d recommend this trip overall. 👍

When I arrived in Whitby, this seaside town was just waking up. . The town lies where the Esk River meets the sea, its rooftops on both sides shrouded in a thin gray-blue mist. The fishing harbor was quiet, masts casting long shadows on the water. On the distant east cliff, the outline of the abbey faintly appeared on the skyline—like a massive Gothic tombstone silently overlooking the world that had yet to awaken. . Whitby is an ancient fishing town on the North Yorkshire coast. It’s famous for Dracula but is much more than vampire legends. Captain Cook began his seafaring career here, and even earlier, in the 7th century, a nun named Hilda founded the first abbey atop these cliffs. . The ruins of Whitby Abbey stand on the cliff, facing the North Sea. The towering Gothic arches and crumbling walls before me were built in the 13th to 14th centuries as part of a Benedictine monastery. They remained almost intact until the 18th century, but after Henry VIII dissolved the monastery in 1538, the interior was stripped and the stones repurposed. In 1914, German warship shelling severely damaged the west facade. . What remains now are only these bones carved by sea wind and time. I stood alone in the center of the nave ruins. The broken arches reached toward the sky, and the sea breeze, blowing through every crack, let out a low moan. At that moment, I finally understood why people say there are three kinds of abbey ruins in the world: ordinary, picturesque, and Whitby Abbey. . This is not a ruin. It is a long poem written in stone about faith, war, destruction, and time. . If you want to photograph the abbey without people—truly empty shots that speak to solitude—be sure to enter right when it opens. The abbey usually opens at 10:00 AM (9:30 AM on some busy days in peak season), with the busiest hours between 11:00 AM and 2:00 PM. The abbey in morning light has a texture that noon can’t replicate. . Practical tips: · Address: Abbey Lane, Whitby, North Yorkshire YO22 4JT · Opening hours: usually 10:00 AM–5:00 PM (may extend to 6:00 PM in summer). Check the official website before you go · Admission: about £7–14 for adults, discounts for students, free for English Heritage members · Transportation: about 1 hour by train from York; if driving, navigate to Abbey Lane, then a 10-minute walk from the parking lot · Recommended visit time: 1–3 hours .
