Karamea is also the northern end of the Heaphy Track (82 km south to Collingwood). I drove SH67 from Westport, slept at the Karamea Domain Camp (18 NZD/night, card), walked at 7 a.m. in March. Day 19°C, forest 14°C, moss damp from sea fog. Wore trail-runners; the loop is gravel-and-board, the rimu root flare slick. Mistake: I arrived in Karamea at 6 p.m. in May — the only shop closed, no dinner except a 12 NZD camp-stove reheat, the Big Rimu loop was dark by 7. Stock in Westport. Second mistake: I hugged the big rimu for a scale photo — DOC sign: bark oil transfer kills lichen, 200 NZD fine, 2 m back. Third: I picked a "mushroom" (it was werewere-kōkako blue, protected) — a local: "that's Māori taonga, don't pocket it". Buy in Karamea (if open): a 8 NZD sandwich at the General Store, not the 35 NZD Heaphy-track hut dinner you didn't book. Gear: a 30 NZD fleece — Karamea nights hit 4°C in March. Local rule: no dogs, no touching rimu, no drones, the loop is wheel-chair friendly — stay on it. The moss on the rimu buttress is 600-yr accumulation — step on gravel. Opinion: The Big Rimu Walk is 30 min free and the trees are older than the Treaty of Waitangi. Most Heaphy trampers skip it for the track start 3 km away. Should DOC add a 10 NZD ranger "rimu + moss" talk Apr–Oct, or keep it self-walk? I'd talk it. Would you drive 2.5 hrs to stand under a 600-yr rimu draped in moss?
