- Walking into the Funes Valley on a peaceful night. That night we stayed in a modern wooden cabin. The landlord had light-colored hair and eyes, wearing a fleece jacket. For travelers like us who only stayed one night and arrived late at night, he spread out a map and patiently introduced hiking routes. The guidebook marked every peak of the Odle Group and drew numbered trails. I casually asked if he had been on all of them, and he nodded lightly: “Oh, this is where I work.” It turned out he had once gone to Guangzhou in his early years, making a living by playing traditional Alpine accordion music. I don’t know what attracted him back—or brought him here—to become a forest ranger. The next morning, we strolled along the winding mountain road. The air was crisp, the view vast, with only the sound of streams and cowbells in our ears. We occasionally stepped aside for passing RVs and mountain bikes, soon climbing up to the church on the hillside. The church was empty and quiet, all the pews waiting silently like tombstones in the church garden. This was a resting place with an excellent view. Many black-and-white photos were quite old, with only one in color—a gentle-smiling elderly man who passed away last year, with the mountains he knew all his life behind him. They say Funes is just an ordinary valley at the foot of the Alps. Yet some people spend most of their lives in such an “ordinary” place, patrolling the mountains, working, herding, until they rest. A kind of resolute way of being that requires no escape. Standing in the church garden, gazing at the quietly lying Funes Valley in the distance, the statue of the suffering Jesus is a weather vane, guiding the way for all passersby. Dolomiti was once a distant word; now I am here, and it still feels somewhat far away.

If you don’t like skiing, you can try other exciting snow activities: Horse-drawn sleigh: Ride a sleigh through the forest for about 1 hour. The hut was bustling with trekkers, but everyone seemed relaxed and enjoying their break. A cold beer here was simply the best, instantly washing away the exhaustion of the hike. The menu offered a variety of meals and desserts, making it a great spot to enjoy a warm soup or pasta while taking a break. Behind the hut, there was a small but beautiful lake, and sitting by the lakeside with a beer in hand, taking in the scenery, was truly delightful. Locatelli Hut, embraced by the crisp air of the highlands, was the perfect reward and resting place after a trek.
