2026 Ulcinj Travel Guide: must-see attractions, popular food, hotels, transport & travel experiences (updated in July)

Of course, our goal was to hit up as many gorgeous spots and towns as possible, both along the coast and high up in the mountains. · we spent a lot of time researching and managed to plan the trip absolutely PERFECTLY 😍 · 🔸Starting off, of course, with Kotor 🛥️ 2-3 days is plenty to explore the surroundings and take your time seeing everything! Hike to the top, try some traditional dishes, and soak in the vibes and beauty of the bay. Next up 🔸Budva, Sveti Stefan, Petrovac. We stayed in Petrovac for 2 days since it's way less touristy than the neighboring towns. 🔸Then onto some prime sunbathing spots: Bar, Susanj, and Ulcinj, which boasts tons of beaches right on the border with Albania. 2-3 days is enough for all of this (if you're planning an active trip). If you just want to lounge on the beach, you could stay longer. Just a heads up, these are definitely the more tourist-heavy spots ☺️ 🔸Moving on to the other side of the Bay of Kotor You should dedicate at least 3 days to Herceg Novi. I completely fell in love with this town—it’s quiet, peaceful, and stunning. Lots of places to walk around, spots to sunbathe, great cafes and restaurants, plus plenty of attractions nearby. From here, it's an easy trip to Perast, a tiny one-street town practically floating on the water. You can also head to Dobrota to grab some fresh farm-to-table mussels and oysters 🦪. Honestly, these spots are highly recommended, but they're best done as day trips 🔝 🔸Next stop - Mountainous Montenegro 🇲🇪 🏔️ We booked a place in Zabljak for 4 days to explore the area, and it turns out there’s so much to see! The drive from Herceg Novi takes about 4-6 hours, but it’s insanely scenic, so factor that into your plans 😃 On the way, make sure to swing by Podgorica to pick up some wine 🍷 (our friends love staying there since the airport is close, but there isn't really much else to do), and check out the Ostrog Monastery—ideally in the morning before the crowds hit. It's a gorgeous spot right where the mountains begin. 📍You absolutely have to make a pit stop nearby at the Panorama Lake Viewpoint with Cafe (the coffee ☕️ is just as amazing as the view), and the Piva Canyon viewpoint is another "wow" moment. Then, winding through tunnels and peaks, we made our way to the Sedlo Mountain Pass. We snapped a million photos and braced ourselves for a bit of a chill. Finally, here is the mountain town of Zabljak, where amazing local food, natural beauty, peace and quiet, crisp mountain air, and incredible hiking trails are waiting for you 🌲🐿️ 🥘 🔸Heading back to TIVAT via Kolasin - we stocked up on cheese and prosciutto for souvenirs at Vujisic prodavnica Zdrave hrane Kolašin, and then took a scenic, quiet drive down through Grebaje Valley back to the sea 🌊 Tivat really only needs 1-2 days max. Just enough time to stroll around the marina, check out the yachts, and unwind after the road trip. 📌Tips: Renting a car is an absolute must, ideally right from the airport, since a single taxi ride costs about the same as a full day's car rental (35-50 euros). Make sure to ask your hosts about the weather, especially in Zabljak. It might be a balmy +20°C at the coast but a freezing +4°C in the mountains. That's totally normal. Come prepared, or even the local liqueurs and hot soups won't save you 🥶🧣 🗺️ The route was breathtaking and filled with wonderful encounters with different people along the way. It later gained the status of a commune, meaning an independent city within the Roman Empire. From 1941 to 1944 it was known as the Municipality of Ulcinj, part of the Kingdom of Albania. Today's form of local government - the municipality, and won in 1952 with the reforms in the territorial administration in the People's Republic of Montenegro. In the years 1952–1955 it was called the Civic Municipality of Ulcinj, which was part of the Bar District. The territory besides this urban commune was smaller than that of today's commune, because the region of Ana e Malit was not part of it, but it was a separate commune, but in contrast to that of Ulcinj, it was a rural commune (rural) In 1955, with the new reforms of local government, the Civic Municipalities of Ulcinj merged with the Rural Municipality of Katërkollë (Ana e Malit) and the Municipality of Ulcinj was formed, part of the Bar District. In 1957 counties were abolished and municipalities became the only level of local government in Montenegro. If you enjoy peaceful walking on paths threading along the border between pine forest and sapphire-blue sea, you could do worse than packing a picnic and hiking it the 10km or so from Ulcinj Beach to Long Beach (Велика плажа - Velika Plazha). Exit the Beach in Ulcinj Town to the South East, and skirt the edge of the promontory (maybe trying the catch of the day at Ke Muji restaurant in Summer) until you reach the road. Walk this road (Steva Đakonovića Čiče), past a selection of rocky beaches, beach clubs and restaurants, as far as Hotel Albatross. At this point the route branches off to the right onto the perfectly named Rruga e Pishave (The Way of Pines), a path that snakes beguilingly through dappled shade alongside rocky beaches, glittering blue sea, and past the odd beachside bar (you’ll have difficulty resisting Škarpina Konoba Beach, but you probably deserve some liquid refreshment by now, right?). Despite the temptations of stopping at this or any of the other beaches, it’s truly worth continuing the walk for the breathtaking 360 degree view from the wooden bench at the top of Cape Gjerana (Kepi i Gjeranave). Stop and drink it in, along with the beverage of your choice from your backpack. Sunsets from this point are phenomenal. You’re nearly at Long Beach now, but take a while to investigate the fishing mechanisms beside the road to Milena Harbour before you totter over the rickety wooden bridge that spans the little river. This marks the beginning of Long Beach’s 12 kilometres of sand - it’s one of the longest beaches in Europe, famous for its kite-surfing schools. Out of season, the denuded parasol-poles of the deserted beach clubs extend hypnotically into the distance, and you’ll have no trouble finding your own spot for a solitary splash in the shallows. Top Tips: 1. There are sections of the coastal path that have no shade. Wear a hat and sun protection, and take plenty of water. 2. I have measured the distance of the hike from the centre of the old town to the middle of Long Beach. Given the enormous length of the beach your walking distance could vary dramatically from this estimate of you decide to go to the far end. 3. The public beaches along the route are open year round, but the accompanying bars and eateries are only open in high summer. Being conquered by the Ottomans in 1571 brought an unexpected silver lining for the talented sailors of Ulcinj: Ottoman Grand Admiral Uluç Ali immediately spotted their potential and helped them to to band together into one of the most capable, organised - and certainly, feared - flotillas of state-sanctioned pirates in the Adriatic. For the modern-day visitor to Ulcinj the Corsairs’ legacy still permeates the town; the old town itself is dominated by the castle that they used as their headquarters (and which locals of a poetic disposition even believe resembles a ship stranded, Mount Ararat-style, atop the promontory). The castle is the best place to begin your exploration: start from the tiny fishing harbour at its base and wind your way up the steep path through the seaward gate and up into the ramparts. Unlike other Adriatic fortified towns (Dubrovnik, I’m looking at you) visitors are refreshingly free to clamber around the town walls and through the warren of narrow streets without paying, or, indeed, bumping into many other visitors (certainly when we visited in early spring). Ulcinj still feels largely undiscovered by tourism. The castle itself is a very reasonable €4 to enter, and for this fee you get to scramble at will around the whole tumbledown edifice, as well as peruse the various collections of ethnographic artefacts and photographs. After your visit to the castle, treat yourself to a well-earned drink at Restaurant Dulcinea (nowhere near as expensive as its panoramic views and black-tie clad waiters might suggest). If you’re wondering why the place is named after Don Quixote’s muse (or why there is a bronze statue of Cervantes at the entrance ) the answer is - yet again - ‘Pirates’. Local legend has it that the Spanish author was held captive by the Corsairs here between 1575 and 1580. Dulcinea was allegedly named after Ulcinj - in its original Italian guise, it was christened ‘Dolcigno’. Yes, Ulcinj is not yet geared up for tourists in large numbers. Yes, the beach is largely abandoned until June - heck, even the Burger King is closed outside the high season. And, yes, you may even come across the odd couple of kitchen appliances that someone has chucked over the cliff. There is currently no ‘bus-station’ as such in Shkodër. Instead, buses out of town depart from the central roundabout by The Red Bricks Hotel / Hotel Rozafa. I had been wondering why our hotel manager had advised us to head there early. I initially assumed that buses only left in the morning and therefore we would be stranded if we left later than that, but at breakfast he added ‘I would run over there right now, because the traffic will be bad’. It was a fair warning: I’m writing this passage on the minibus as it waits at the border (see photo) and the queue, while not overlong, is only inching forward. Our bus driver says this is because the border guards work ‘slowly-slowly’. Apparently visa-free border crossing between Albania and Montenegro was only introduced in 2007 - after the narrow pot-holed road that served the border during communism was upgraded with the advent of democracy. Only the road’s speed has improved, however. The glacial checking of passports remains unchanged. Having now arrived at Ulcinj I think the impression that will stay with me from this journey was that it felt like how I imagine travelling must have been during the 1990s and early 2000s: relying upon locals rather than the internet for information and advice, and - the ice thus broken - getting an inkling of the flow and change of local history and opinions from our conversations with the driver. We were the only group in the minibus, and we felt carefully looked after from start to finish- upon arrival at Ulcinj bus station our driver and his employer gave us instructions on how to make the (quite long) walk from the bus station to the historic centre, and bade us what felt like a genuinely affectionate farewell. Key tips: · Yes, head to the road outside Hotel Rozafa early. You will need time to ask the bus drivers there exactly which spot the Ulcinj bus departs from. (For English speakers, the pronunciation is - approximately - ‘Ool-chin-yeh’). · The local bus drivers are really friendly, even if you aren’t planning to use their company or route. It’s worth noting, though, that one of the taxi drivers touting for fares told us ‘no bus for Ulcinj. I’ll take you there - €20 each, same as bus’. Now, it’s perfectly possible that some of these details are befuddled in translation, but there definitely IS a (mini)bus, and the fare is €7 each. It is located right next to the station exit, and there is a Family Mart right next door. The downside is that there is nothing but Family Mart nearby, so if you are Korean and need cash, you will likely have to look for a nearby 7-Eleven. The room might feel cramped if you are large or have a lot of luggage. Overall, it is clean, and the bed is comfortable.
