Timfi travel guide and discussion

#slowtraveling Mikro Papingo (Small Papingo) is a slate-roof village in the Vikos–Aoös National Park, 70 km from Ioannina (KTEL bus, €8 one way, card at the station). From the village, a 2.5 km lane—part paved, part loose limestone—climbs to the Drakolimni Astrakas trail fork, passing the “Stone Forest” (kalderimi lane with moss between the flagstones). Free, no permit. I walked it at 4 pm in May; the moss on the north-facing stones was neon, the south face bone-dry. The lane ends at a spring (Mikro Papingo spring, drinkable) where a taverna woman filled my bottle and pressed a walnut sweet into my hand—“for the climb, not the photo.” Mistake: I wore road sneakers—the limestone scree above the lane demands grip. Rent trekking poles in the village (€3/day, cash). The full Drakolimni hike is 6–7 hrs; I turned at the stone forest viewpoint (1,600 m) as cloud rolled off Mount Tymfi. The moss smelled of thyme and wet slate. Should a stone lane count as “wild” if it was laid by shepherds 400 years ago?
