The building, designed with the motif of a quarry where the raw materials for tiles are excavated, is large and mysterious, with a cute little entrance. There are many things to see, such as a windowless building, a gaping hole in the building, and a staircase where light shines in. The tile workshop can be booked, and you can make your own work, so I recommend it! There was no time to meet for the experience on the day I went, so I bought a few tiles as a gift and used them for crafts at home. #AutumnTravel #Trip2022 I went to Tajimi to visit Terunobu Fujimori's Mosaic Museum, which I had been wanting to visit. The building is modeled after a clay mountain, and you can look at it forever. There are stairs inside up to the 4th floor, but they are intentionally made a little thinner as you go further. The stairs are also made of straw and leaves...kneaded together with the soil. The building is modeled after a clay mountain, but it reminded me of pottery and clay figurines. Half of the 4th floor is unroofed, so you can enjoy the changes in the tiles depending on the weather. # Of course, if it rains, the floor will get wet. I had lunch with a drink at Swan Cafe. It seems that workshops can be held at both Swan Cafe and the Mosaic Museum. I didn't have time to do it, but I bought some tiles to take home. It was a really fun day.

You have to transfer trains, catch a bus, and then walk a long stretch along the national highway. Once you turn off the highway, there are plenty of steep hills to climb. Taking a taxi or driving yourself would definitely be a much more convenient option. The recommended route for exploring the museum starts with taking the elevator to the top floor and making your way down the stairs, one level at a time. The exhibits are divided into mosaic displays, the history of tile manufacturing, and modern interior design. Finally, the gift shop on the first floor is fantastic for picking up souvenirs, and they even offer DIY mosaic tile workshops. Since I faced a language barrier, I simply bought a few tiles to take home and arranged them on an IKEA photo frame—a truly therapeutic little project 🩵 For context, I visited this museum in late December 2022, right after the pandemic restrictions were lifted, when everyone was still required to wear masks. Fortunately, the walking path was largely deserted, so I could safely take my mask off. There was still snow on the ground along the way, though by the time I reached Tajimi at noon, most of it had melted. Whenever I got tired, the handy beverage vending machines along the road were perfect for a quick energy boost. Looking back, I slightly regret not stopping by a nearby cafe for a rest. ps. After touring the museum, I grabbed some yakisoba from a takoyaki food truck in the plaza. It was packed with meat and absolutely delicious!

"Tiger Creek Mountain" usually refers to the mountain name where the ancient Eihō-ji Temple, built in the Kamakura period (1313), is located. This Zen temple, founded by the famous monk Muso Soseki, is itself a highly charming attraction. National Treasure and Famous Garden: The temple's Kannon Hall and Founder's Hall are designated Japanese National Treasures, while the pond-strolling garden featuring the "Muki Bridge" and "Wolong Pond" is also a nationally recognized scenic spot in Japan. Autumn Highlights: By late November, the stars here are not only the autumn leaves but also the giant ginkgo tree over 700 years old in front of the main hall. Its golden leaves intertwine with the surrounding fiery red maple leaves, together painting a serene and timeless Zen scene. 🌸 The Star of the Cherry Blossoms: Obara Shikizakura So, where are the cherry blossoms? Strictly speaking, the cherry blossoms are not inside Eihō-ji Temple but around it, especially in the Obara area of Toyota City, Aichi Prefecture, where the "Shikizakura" (Four Seasons Cherry) is widely planted. Rare "Autumn Cherry Blossoms": This is a very special cherry blossom variety (a hybrid of the Yae-zakura and Edo Higan cherry trees), notable for blooming twice a year—once in spring and once in autumn. What really made it famous is its spectacular bloom in autumn (from mid-November to early December). Kaoransui, Kokei Eihō-ji Temple, Obara Shikizakura—these places around Nagoya are quite far apart, which led to giving up on several attempts at Chubu autumn leaf viewing due to poor cost performance. This time, I originally planned a private car tour to cover them all at once, but surprisingly found a day tour that already includes all of them with a very reasonable price, so this one-day tour was confirmed: 1. The itinerary of this tour is very reasonable based on my experience, going clockwise from Eihō-ji Temple to Obara and then to Kaoransui. Travel time is short, avoiding peak times with most tourists, the time spent at each spot is just right, and Kaoransui also offers night illumination of the autumn leaves. 2. Kokei Eihō-ji Temple is not large, featuring a large ginkgo tree as its treasure (photo 2). Although it’s not as big as Kyoto’s Nishi Hongan-ji, it is tall, with a lake and a bridge, and the maple leaves are very red. Whether as a warm-up for this trip or for photos, it was very satisfying (photos 3-6). 3. Obara Shikizakura, from the perspective of the four-season cherry blossoms, is somewhat overrated, especially if you have already seen the cherry blossom season; it’s hard to compare. The mix with maple leaves can probably only be improved through post-processing (photos 7, 8). But this place has a Yakushi-ji Temple, which is quite nice. As long as you don’t mind climbing a few dozen steps, there are also quite red maple trees and a ground covered with ginkgo leaves, which compensates for the shortfall of the cherry blossoms (photos 9, 10). 4. Kaoransui truly deserves the title of the King of Chubu Autumn Leaves, with mountains covered in red leaves, rivers, red bridges, and a pretty good snack street. Highly recommend the Kōjaku-ji Temple on the mountain; a temple with a red leaf background is always the standard for Japanese autumn leaf viewing (photos 11-16). 5. The tour allows 3 hours at Kaoransui, but based on my experience, 2 hours is enough to walk from one end to the other and back, then wait until 5 PM for the illumination when it gets dark, which is completely sufficient. 6. At the snack street, I tried the ramen you have to hold the bowl while walking—just average, but good for trying something new and not expensive; at the market in the middle (opposite the wild boar meat skewers), the first okonomiyaki was huge, felt like 600 yen could serve 3 people, and it tasted good; the sweet potato chips were also quite tasty, though not very cost-effective.

#BackToSchool Days Many travelers consider Magome-juku and Tsumago-juku, once important stops on the route between Kansai and Edo, as just another stop along the way. If time permits, consider staying one or two nights to fully experience the charm of these two important prefectures. Many travelers start from Nagoya and take a direct bus to Magome-juku. I also started from Nagoya, but I chose to rent a car and drive myself. Whether you're traveling alone or in a small group, I recommend renting a car, provided one member can drive. Firstly, car rentals are quite inexpensive; I rented a car for six days for just over HK$1,200, which is very economical. Secondly, you can pick up the car directly near Chubu Centrair International Airport, saving the time spent waiting to go to the city center and then waiting for a bus, which could potentially require an overnight stay in Nagoya to catch a bus. This is time-consuming and inconvenient, and wastes a lot of time unnecessarily. Actually, it's only a two-hour drive from Tokoname City, where Chubu Centrair International Airport is located, to Magome-juku. You can stay overnight in Magome-juku and start your itinerary early the next morning. Magome-juku is located in Nakatsugawa City, so many people choose to stay overnight in Nakatsugawa or Ena City for convenience. However, Nakatsugawa and Ena cities are about 10-20 kilometers away from Magome-juku, requiring some detours. Driving there is a direct route, and I also chose to stay at a guesthouse within Magome-juku. There are very few accommodations within a few kilometers of Magome-juku, only one hot spring inn, Hanakarasa, and a few small private guesthouses, offering no more than ten beds each, making the competition fierce. This time, I chose a rather unconventional place to stay—a guesthouse converted from a rural school (I think it was an elementary school!). It truly is a still-functioning school; upon entering, images straight out of a Japanese youth school drama came to mind, along with rows of shoe lockers for students to change into. I, too, followed local custom, taking off my shoes and changing into slippers to check in. The reception area was formerly the teachers' office, with a section partitioned off to store tourist brochures, reference books, and a small shop for guests. The entire school only has three types of rooms, located in the principal's office on the ground floor and two large classrooms on the second floor. The accommodations include bunk beds (general dormitories), double beds separated only by curtains for couples, and two specially converted double rooms. I stayed in one of these, the principal's office. The room was so large it echoed, with two single beds in the center and a traditional Japanese hearth on the other side. There was no toilet or bathroom inside. The entire campus shares bathrooms, and each of the two-story buildings has a kitchen/lounge at one end, where guests can chat or cook. This is a major highlight, as the guesthouse doesn't offer catering services; guests can eat out, buy takeout, or cook their own meals. It's highly recommended to buy groceries at the market while driving and cook on campus. The kitchen is fully equipped; everything you can think of, and even things you haven't, is there waiting to be used. You can also take your cooked food back to your room to enjoy at your leisure. Strolling through the campus at night feels like stepping back in time, as if returning to your school days. The corridors, basketball courts, and auditorium all feel real, constantly reminding you of your student days. The school's location is excellent; it's basically just around the corner from the entrance to Magome-juku. Magome-juku is a cluster of settlements built uphill, with houses cascading down the mountainside in a charming, picturesque way. Those with a good stamina can even hike directly to Tsumago-juku, a journey of about 8 kilometers and three to four hours, enjoying the beautiful natural scenery of Kiso-ji along the way. On the return trip, you can take the shuttle bus between Magome-juku and Tsumago-juku – a relaxing and beneficial activity. On the day I left the school, I happened to encounter a group of elementary school students being led by their teachers on an activity. Apparently, the school actually rents out its facilities to educational organizations – how considerate! One of the main reasons I chose this guesthouse/school was that it could serve as a base for my trip. There are numerous attractions in both directions, such as Ena Gorge and Ryujin Falls, and you can continue north to famous tourist destinations like Hida-Takayama, Shirakawa-go, Gero Onsen, Korankei, Eihoji Temple, and Inuyama Castle. My entire trip was planned based on this, and I'd like to share it with you all. However, before that, I'd like to introduce the guesthouse school's information for your reference. It is currently used as a training ground for seminarians. Unfortunately, photography is not allowed inside the chapel. And it is the only monastery in Japan that brews wine. The grapes grown in the vast fields are brewed and turned into "monastery wine," which is widely loved as a wine made in Tajimi.
