Pure Burger and pizza at the Arctic circle
This restaurant is actually called Kauppayhtio (with two dots over the last o) in Finnish and it means trade company. Well, their name is part of their brand as they do trade indeed but they’re trading burgers and pizzas to people. I didn’t try pizza this time as I was eager to have one of their well known burgers.
The restaurant has been decorated using kind of pop-art / vintage style. I like it although it’s purposely designed to be a little unfinished, a little factory like.
The most important part is the dining experience. The service is very much in line with their style mixing friendly and a little industrial style service but one thing they are very passionate about is their food. The burgers are worth tasting. The serving is original their style and the wall of chili sauces offers the customer a chance to give a significant boost to the burger. I had mine with side salad but fries and even loaded fries are also an option. The price of the meal is about 20 euros without shake and about 25 euros with the milkshake which is famous too and indeed tasty. So when compared to many other restaurants in the region the price is very reasonable but the biggest thing is their dedication and their willingness to do it with style.
You can find Kauppayhtio from Rovaniemi in northern Finland. Their address is Valtakatu 24.

Pielpajarvi Wilderness Church
This is a place you just won’t find accidentally. Literally in the middle of nowhere in Inari community, Finnish Lapland there’s a church that’s not located near any main roads and it’s completely inaccessible without hiking a few kilometers.
Pielpajarvi used to be a winter village for the people of Inari where they used to gather for markets and listening to religious ceremonies. Anyway there was never any real village with people living there, people used to come there when the lake was frozen and hence the church and the surroundings were more easily accessible.
The first church in that location was built already 1646-1648 but it was rotten and hence destroyed. The current church was built to the site and was finished 1760.
The church used to be in regular use until late 19th century when it was replaced by a new church that was built near the habitation. But the wilderness Church is still occasionally in use, every year there’s a Midsummer ceremony and some couples can also use the church for their weddings.
The church is located about 10 km north from the village of Inari. The address to the parking where the hiking route to the church starts is Sarviniementie 249, Inari.
There’s no services and no admission fee to the church but nearby wilderness hut offers some shield against bad weather and also fireplace, simple cooking facilities and an outdoor restroom.

Tankavaara Gold Museum
Tankavaara Gold Museum is located adjacent to the Gold Village. It was built to the authentic environment, near one of the Lapland Gold rush sites. Actually there’s still regular gold panning going on in the area.
The museum is well made and contains a lot of old gold panning equipment and some video performances as well. The admission is not expensive (12 euros for an adult and 6 euros for a kid and 27 euros for a family in 2021). The museum is open from 10 am until 5 pm during the summer and until 4 pm during the winter.
From the museum shop you can buy some gold rush related souvenirs. The gold village is also within walking distance from the museum and you can plan your visit to include both of these sites.
The museum is located just next to the main road 4 (E75) and it’s located about 100 km north from the town of Sodankyla and 30 km south from Saariselka winter sports resort.
If you plan to hike a little in the UKK National Park, some paths (Tankavaara geological path) starts from there and you can park your car there for free.

Be on top of the world in North Cape
The North Cape is a place located in the Nordkapp municipality, Troms og Finnmark County in northern Norway. It’s also the northernmost place where you can go by car in the European continent. It’s actually located on an island as well so it’s not part of the continent in that way.
North Cape is a popular tourist attraction. After driving there by the very interesting road (I guarantee, the road is both narrow and full of steep turns and hills), the cape itself is 307 meter high cliff with a large and relatively flat plateau where tourists can go and watch the midnight sun (although watching clouds is more common).
The place can be reached by car using the European Road E69 which ends at the cape. Getting to the island is easy using the nordkapp tunnel which itself is a spectacular engineering achievement. You can also take a Hurtigruten ferry from another town to the local town of Honningsvag (at the same island) and then travel the remaining 33 km by bus, taxi or a car.
The climate is warmer than many may expect during the winter but in the summer the heavy winds and humid cool air can astonish an unprepared tourist.
At the gate of the North Cape you have two options: visit the parking and the outside areas only (free of charge in 2021 until further notice) or visit the exhibition including the panorama films and Cave of Lights. The prices for 2021 are NOK 260 per adult and 80 per children. A family ticket costs NOK 600 for two adults and two children.
I have to say the place is breathtaking. Absolutely amazing. I was really happy to go there but doing a round trip in one day from Finland is a little too hard. If you come from the Finnish Lapland, I recommend you to stay overnight in Norway after visiting Nordkapp. From Saariselka the two-way driving distance is about 920 km and it was quite much for one driver in one day.

Tankavaara Gold Village
Have you ever wished to visit a Klondike-style village and feel the gold rush? Well, if you’re not going to Canada but Finland instead, you can go to Tankavaara Gold Village.
The basic idea is the same. There was a gold rush and the village is there to celebrate that. Actually there still is gold panning going on in the region. But the village is there mainly for tourists.
I have to say that the Tankavaara Gold Village is tiny. It’s definitely not suitable for a full day visit but if you visit the gold museum just next to the village, you can probably stay half a day.
What’s interesting, there are some very nice little houses made of beer bottles. Those are definitely worth seeing. There are also some shops and a chance to try gold panning yourself (with guaranteed results) if you want.
The village is located just next to the main road 4 in Tankavaara, some 80 km north of the town of Sodankyla and about 30 km south from Saariselka winter sports resort.
There are UKK National Park trails that start from there. Maybe you could also go hiking?

Jerisjarvi Arctic Sauna World
Finnish people love to go to sauna and it’s part of almost everyone’s weekly traditions to go to a sauna. Many people even have own saunas at home.
I was hiking for a week and after living in a tent I wanted to find a place to relax and clean myself after the long hike before returning home from Lapland.
At Jerisjarvi (lake Jeris), there’s an Arctic Sauna World. It’s located in the address Jerisjarventie 91 not far from Pallastunturi and the town of Muonio near the crossing of streets 957 and 9572. If wanted, hiking trails to the nearby fells start from almost the front door of the hotel.
The place is collocated with a tiny hotel and a camping area for camping cars and trailers (and even tents). The entry is 25 euros for an adult and 15 euros for a child (under 12) in 2021.
The place has four different saunas. There’s two (or some days three) normal saunas, a smoke sauna and an IR sauna. All of them well designed and giving different bathing experience. There’s also a sports massage salon, a restaurant and a swimming opportunity (around the year) in the lake. There are also suitable all weather relaxation areas with a good lake view in a few places so it’s usable even during the bad weather and winter.
I definitely recommend the place. I think the service of the staff was very friendly and places have been kept in a good condition. It’s worth the money spent for a true Finnish sauna experience. As a Finn myself I can guarantee it.

Muonio Swiss Cafe
Sometimes there are unexpected things in unexpected places. I got my moment of surprise when I drove to the tiny town on Muonio in the Western Lapland in Finland just near the Swedish border (by the road E8).
All suddenly I found a Swiss Cafeteria in this tiny town.
The place was founded by Swiss Agnes Bissig who moved to Muonio in 2008. She used to be a florist but they founded the cafeteria with another Swiss baker Thomas Achermann who moved to Muonio in 2009.
The cafeteria makes clear that it’s a Swiss place, not even trying to be Finnish. They sell Swiss chocolate (delicious but expensive) and even Swiss Chocolate. There are also some handmade things such as pastries and chocolate from the cafeteria’s own kitchen.
I have to say the place is very cozy but it’s situated in a place that can’t be accidentally found. You have to leave the E8 road and even drive a tiny distance away from the supermarkets in the center to arrive there. But the place is worth visiting. The pastries are delicious and not even extremely expensive. The Swiss Hot chocolate is fairly expensive but worth having.
You can find the cafeteria using its address Puthaanrannantie 5, Muonio.

Amazing burgers in Kolari
Kolari means a car accident in Finnish but actually this time the name means an old person making charcoal to be used in a furnace to melt metal.
Anyway, Kolari is a little village in Western Lapland too. It’s one of the northernmost stations in the Finnish railroad network but also a place where you can buy one of the best burgers that exist.
Kolarin Burger, despite the very basic look of the restaurant is amazing. There are various burgers with relative cheap prices and the taste is amazing! Definitely worth stopping on the way to the northwest ski resorts or on a road trip in Lapland.
The place is also conveniently located just near the Swedish border crossing so you can visit the place also when traveling in northern Sweden.
I recommend you to try the reindeer burger or if you’re extremely hungry, you can have the 2x220 gram double burger. The prices of menus are 10-20 euros including a drink and well made fries. Pizzas are good too but don’t differentiate from other pizza restaurants as much so I definitely recommend having a burger.

Summit of Taivaskero Fell at 809 m
There are no real mountains in Finland. Those that still exist have been reshaped by the ice age to roundish-topped hills with maximum around 1,3 km in height. These fells were as high as 4 km when they were younger but having existed for 1,9 billion years, they have undergone a lot of erosion.
But this doesn’t mean that they wouldn’t be interesting! Quite the contrary! If you happen to visit the Pallastunturi region in Finnish Lapland near the ski resorts of Levi and Yllas, you definitely can use some time and complete the Taivaskero hiking tour. Of course it’s only available in the summer (without skis) and during the midsummer season you can even see a gorgeous view of the midnight sun.
The route leaves from Pallastunturi Hotel and is 9 km in length and has ascension of about 470 meters. You can decide whether you want to climb the hill using the shallow path on the right side (that looks like the Great Wall of China from the distance - see the last pic) or climb quickly using the ski slope path just behind the hotel.
The views from the summit are spectacular. And I have to mention, the Olympic Fire for Helsinki Olympics in 1952 was fired there too. And this fell / mountain as well as the surrounding area is part of the Pallas-Yllastunturi National Park.

A hidden treasure in Lapland
How would you feel if you would be taken to a remote place far from others and you would be able to breathe the completely pure air and swim in (practically) drinkable and completely clear water? Would you love to go to a sandy beach in that kind of place?
In Finnish Lapland, near the Pallas Fells there’s a place called “the Red Sand”. It has got its name from the reddish color of the beach sand. Actually it’s not officially a beach, it’s a wilderness hut which is situated in a very special place.
The Red Sands used to be a hidden treasure very recently but due to social media it has become more and more popular. That also causes some erosion at the very special place. So I make a kind request: please preserve the nature and take your own trash with you.
The place is located by the lake Pallasjarvi in Kittila, Finland. Actually you can only go there by car and navigate there by putting “punainenhiekka” to your navigator. I promise you: it’s a remote place in the middle of nowhere. But going there on a midsummer night may surprise you positively - especially if the night is clear.
There is also a wilderness hut (in pictures) where you can cook and the wood is provided for free.

Arctic Guesthouse & Igloos in Ranua is one of the first places on the planet, where you can actually stay in a fully movable glass igloo boat. In winter these glass igloos can be pulled around a lake with an ATV or snowmobile and in summer they turn into boats that float on top of the lake and can even be driven on the lake, powered with their own electric engines. Talko about an ideal accommodation option to observe nature phenomenon such as the #northernlights aka #auroraborealis in #lapland in #finland.

Lapland on a Reindeer Sleigh!
Embarking on a reindeer sleigh ride in Lapland is an immersive journey where reality surpasses even the most vivid of winter dreams. Magical trip to ROVANIEMI
I never had it in my mind to step my foot in this city!😭
Rovaniemi is a good place to stay because the solar wind was so strong throughout my stay in Lapland.
Santa claus village is a must visit when you are in Finland. It takes about 8 hours journey by santa claus express train from Helsinki. It offers a lot of fun activities around the park
- reindeer ride
- husky ride (booking prior is needed)
- crossing arctic circle line
- sending postcard from the arctic
and a lot more including living in a cabin nearby
