📍 Wroclaw, Poland 🇵🇱
💡 Wrocław is divided into two main tourist areas: the Old Town and the Cathedral Island.
The Old Town is full of Eastern European-style architecture, such as the Town Hall, St. Elizabeth's Church, the Market Hall, and the rows of houses around the Central Market Square. It is not large, and you can see all the attractions in about an hour.
The Cathedral Island is named after the Gothic double-towered Cathedral of the Virgin Mary. Visitors to the Cathedral Island must pass through the Tumski Bridge. Locals believe that locking a lock on the bridge will bless their love, so there are many locks left by lovers on the bridge.

Imperial Castle in Poznan
Let's start with the most eye-catching building - the Imperial Castle. Few people know that this is a castle built for the last Prussian emperor, Wilhelm II. The castle is the last imperial residence in Europe. It was built as an element of the Imperial District in place of the demolished fortifications of the 19th century Poznań Fortress, which was to defend access to Berlin from the east in the event of a war with Russia. The architecture of the buildings built then was to resemble German cities, and the castle, built in the Neo-Romanesque style, was to give the impression that the Germans had ruled the area for a thousand years. All this was not accidental - in fact, the new area was marked diagonally from Ostrów Tumski - associated with the cradle of Polish statehood.
The Emperor came to Poznań only three times, once to personally collect the keys to the castle (1910), and the last time in 1915. Shortly thereafter, the empire ended... Today, the castle is mainly the seat of the Zamek Cultural Center, but if you ever manage to take a tour, be sure to walk around its most interesting nooks and crannies and pay attention to the decorations - they reminded us a bit of socialist realist atmosphere.
Since we have a castle, we must also have castle gardens - we gladly hid in their shade when the sun warmed up a bit. In the inner courtyard of the castle you will also find the famous "abakans", i.e. sculptures by an artist from Poznań, Magdalena Abakanowicz.

Poznań city walls
The walls surrounding the medieval city were built around 1280, in place of the wooden and earth fortifications erected immediately after the location. The perimeter of the fortifications had a shape similar to a circle. The length of the walls was approximately 1,700 m, and the area surrounded by them was approximately 21 ha. The wall was built of ceramic bricks with lime mortar in the Wendish arrangement and placed on a stone foundation. Its thickness was 1-1.2 m. It was topped with a battlement, under which - from the inside - there was a wooden porch for the defenders. The height of the wall was up to 11 m.
The wall was reinforced with approximately 35 towers, spaced every 35-45 m around the perimeter. Their number and spacing placed 14th-century Poznań among the most strongly fortified Polish cities. The rectangular towers were one storey higher than the wall and open to the interior of the city. However, already in the first half In the 15th century, they began to be rebuilt, closing them from the inside. The towers had their own names. those of them that were assigned to the care of individual craft guilds bore their names (e.g. Tailor's, Butcher's, etc.). There were also names from other users (e.g. the tower of the Dominican fathers).
Four gates led to the city: Wroniecka - from the north, Wielka and Wodna - from the east and Wrocław - from the south. Next to the gates, there were several pedestrian gates, carved into the walls, mostly in the 15th and 16th centuries.

Stronghold in Kalisz
The Kalisz stronghold is one of the most important places related to the beginnings of the Polish state. It was built in the 1960s on a sandy island surrounded by the waters of Prosna. According to some researchers, it was from Kalisz that the Piast dynasty began its military conquest of towns located in today's Greater Poland. Early medieval Kalisz experienced its greatest flourishing during the reign of Prince Mieszko III the Old, who founded a Romanesque collegiate church and established a mint here. The Kalisz stronghold also became the burial place of Mieszko the Old. It was during the reign of this ruler that Kalisz, along with Poznań and Gniezno, became one of the three main towns in Greater Poland. The end of the stronghold took place in the 13th century, when the Silesian prince Henry the Bearded conquered the stronghold and moved Kalisz to the right side of Prosna.
Thanks to reconstructions of medieval buildings and devices, visitors can personally experience the history of this place.

Skansen in Opole
The open-air museum was established in 1961; in 1965, work on the construction of the permanent exhibition began, and in 1970 the museum grounds were opened to visitors. The main part of the exhibition are relocated and rebuilt objects of rural architecture illustrating the living conditions of the rural population in the period from the 18th to the beginning of the 20th century: residential buildings, barns, granaries, as well as mills and windmills, a forge, a church, an inn and a school. A collection of almost 7,000 museum objects in the field of material culture was also created, including historic items from the fields of agriculture, breeding, crafts and everyday life of the inhabitants of Opole villages.
In the area occupied by the Museum, which covers just over 10 hectares, the full cultural landscape of the Opole village has been recreated. Homesteads and individual architectural objects are surrounded by carefully reconstructed, rich vegetation. The collection of the Opole Village Museum in Opole includes 23 historic buildings with shingle roofs.

The Opole Silesia Gallery Museum
The Opole Silesia Museum is an institution with over 120 years of tradition. It was founded in 1900 as the City Museum in Opole (Städtisches Museum Oppeln). In 1950, its name was changed to the Opole Silesia Museum, under which it operates today.
From the beginning of its existence, the Museum was a multi-department institution. Currently, it consists of seven substantive departments: Archaeology, Museum Education, Ethnography, History, Nature, Art and the Monument Conservation Workshop.
In Opole, the Museum has several exhibition facilities: the baroque former Jesuit building and the new exhibition pavilion form the Main Building at Mały Rynek 7. Right next to it, at ul. Saint Wojciecha 9 there is a Tenement House, and at ul. Ozimska 10, in the building of a 19th-century inn, there is the Gallery of the Opole Silesia Museum. In Góra św. Anna, there is a branch of the institution - the Museum of Insurgent Action.
This is a regional museum with over a hundred years of history! This is where you can see a model of Opole from the mid-18th century, a collection of extraordinary excavations from an ancient settlement in Ostrówek in Opole, but also extraordinary Tułowice porcelain and a collection of works by Jan Cybis. A unique attraction is the tenement house at ul. Saint Wojciecha 9, in which five apartments are presented: each in the style that was in force in the furniture industry in the years 1890 - 1965. In addition to furniture, kitchen appliances and trinkets that created the atmosphere of the house, various ways of heating rooms are presented - tiled stoves and cast iron stoves. Hygiene equipment is also exhibited. A big challenge was to show the equipment used to prepare food.

The museum has five exhibition rooms in which it exhibits both its own collections and deposits from other institutions, and also includes a chapel dedicated to St. Saint Wojciech from the 14th century (rebuilt many times, with post-war decoration).
