Shanghai is truly amazing and so versatile! Come to Shanghai for fantastic and super high skyscrapers, Bund area with spectacular skyline, small streets of Former French Concession with cute and cozy cafes, local lanes with a lot of hidden gems, fancy shopping malls and interesting art areas and museums. Shanghai will give you whatever your soul is craving!
The City of Dreams
I've lived in Shanghai for 4 years, and it's my favorite city in the world. It's fun, modern, traditional, and filled with so many options! Here are some of my must-do recommendations for your visit:
Visit the Bund: The Bund is a waterfront promenade that offers stunning views of the city skyline. It's a great place to walk, take photos, or just people-watch.
Explore Yu Gardens: Yu Gardens are a beautiful example of traditional Chinese gardens. They're a great place to relax and escape the hustle and bustle of the city.
Take a walk through a water village: There are several water villages located around Shanghai. These villages are a great way to experience the traditional way of life in China.
Visit Disney Resort Shanghai: Disney Resort Shanghai is a great place to visit if you're traveling with children or if you're a child at heart. There are rides, shows, and attractions for everyone to enjoy.
Sample the local cuisine: Shanghai is a foodie's paradise! There are restaurants serving food from all over the world, but I recommend trying some of the local specialties, such as xiaolongbao (steamed dumplings), wonton noodles, and Shanghainese fried rice.
No matter what your interests are, you're sure to find something to love in Shanghai.

Shanghai, the heart of the dragon 🐉
Shanghai being one of the most hustling city you’d ever witness in China, is very well known to its unique architecture influenced by different parts of the world 🌎. The heart of Shanghai is the very famous Bund which is lined with colonial-era buildings across the Huangpu River and it is magnificent in the evening.
The sky scraping buildings with unique colloquial vibes works as an enchantment to attract the tourists from all over the world. Especially, the Shanghai Tower and the Oriental Pearl TV Tower are one of the major attractions.
Not only that, places like Yu garden with it’s beautiful flora & fauna gives a cool & calming nature takes you to another world.
Many local & international cuisines are available in every step of the way. As a foreigner if you want to try both international & the local experience, Shanghai undoubtedly is the best place.

A megacity with lots of small town charm.
#visitshanghai
Enjoy everything a megacity like shanghai has to offer!
There are morning open outdoor markets where you can buy local artisan goods. Try a variety of baked goods as well! Just by walking around the Jing’an area you will bump into an event, market, or lovely cafe. It is easy to get around either by walking, biking, or subway.
Another area to check out is The Bund. Here you can see an iconic shoreline day or night. There are ticket booths to buy a boat ride on the river to get closer views of the buildings. You can also go up to the world’s second tallest building, Shanghai Tower, to see an aerial view of the city!
The night life has something to offer everyone. I especially love Jazz at the Lincoln Center and the Pearl is a good spot for a dinner show!
Captivating beauty!🤩 Shanghai!
#visitshanghai
It’s fascinating to see the beautiful lights surrounding the city especially the view from the top🤩🤩🤩 We enjoyed every second of our time here. The lights are fantastic! The buildings are high that made me feel so little.😅This experience is one of the best we had. Everything is so amazing and lovely. it’s a romantic place to be with. It’s the best place you can ever be, Shanghai!
Cultural, vibrant, magnificent Shanghai!
#visitshanghai
During the day the tall buildings along the bund and the beautiful gardens in Yu Yuan are breathtaking.
During the night the coastline and the neon lights of the city command awe and respect. A city with elegance, history and modern beauty.
There are so many things you can do in Shanghai - museums, art galleries, fancy cafes and restaurants, cultural walks, comedian shows, scenic tours… I spent months there and couldn’t finish visiting and appreciating just one area!

Underrated other side of the Bund
This is not exactly Liujiazui - could not tag a more accurate location. Everyone knows West Bund, Bund or North Bund, but rarely do people talk about the Pudong side of the Bund - 滨江。
To cross the river for Pudong, hop on one of the multiple ferry stops along the Bund - I recommend the 董家渡 stop which will disembark you at 塘桥 - slightly south to Liujiazui. (See map)
The entire ferry ride is a less than 10 minutes and costs 2RMB. Go on the upper outdoor deck to get the best views of both sides of the Huangpu river.
Disembarking at 塘桥,walk north along the riverside promenade (滨江)and a get a closer view of the Pearl Tower as well as the the Bund from the other side.
You can also ride or walk the 20km stretch of dedicated cyclist/pedestrian lane. The cyclable route winds through trees, rises above ground and goes through protected forest areas.
Walk or ride, this is a very nice afternoon/sunset activity to to with a family but expect to have go through a few busy areas - Specially when getting closer to the Pearl Tower.
You can plan a picnic or stop at the multiple coffee stops along the river as well as many restaurants - Fat Cow, Eli Falafel, Chili’s etc - as you get closer to Liujiazui.

The Iconic Bund and the Academic Charm of Ton
#visitshanghai During my visit to Shanghai, China, I had the pleasure of exploring two remarkable attractions that perfectly encapsulate the city's vibrant spirit and cultural depth: The Bund and Tongji University. These landmarks offered a captivating blend of historical grandeur and academic excellence, creating a truly memorable experience.
The Bund, located along the Huangpu River, is an iconic symbol of Shanghai's rich history and architectural marvels. As I stood on the waterfront promenade, I was instantly drawn to the stunning juxtaposition of classic European-style buildings and modern skyscrapers that lined the street. The Bund's iconic landmarks, such as the Peace Hotel and the Customs House, exuded a timeless elegance that transported me to a bygone era.
Strolling along The Bund, I marveled at the breathtaking views of the towering Pudong skyline across the river. The contrast between the historic buildings on one side and the futuristic skyscrapers on the other was simply awe-inspiring. Whether during the day or at night when the city lights illuminated the scene, the Bund offered a visual feast that left me in awe of Shanghai's dynamism.
Moving away from the bustling waterfront, I immersed myself in the academic atmosphere of Tongji University. Known for its excellence in engineering, architecture, and design, Tongji University is a renowned institution that has contributed significantly to Shanghai's intellectual landscape.
As I explored the university campus, I admired the beautiful blend of traditional Chinese architecture and modern facilities. The peaceful gardens and tree-lined paths created a serene environment that fostered a sense of inspiration and knowledge-seeking.
Interacting with students and faculty members at Tongji University allowed me to gain insights into the city's academic scene. The vibrant energy on campus was contagious, and it was evident that Tongji University played a pivotal role in shaping the future leaders and innovators of Shanghai.
Beyond its academic achievements, Tongji University also offers cultural experiences through its museums, art exhibitions, and performances. Exploring these avenues allowed me to appreciate the university's dedication to nurturing creativity and artistic expression.
To further enrich my experience, I had the opportunity to savor the local cuisine near Tongji University. The nearby Yangpu and Wujiaochang areas are filled with diverse dining options, ranging from traditional street food to trendy cafes and international restaurants. From sampling flavorful dumplings to indulging in authentic Shanghai-style dishes, the culinary delights around Tongji University were a true treat for the taste buds.

Nighttime Walk in Pudong's Lujiazui
#visitshanghai
Experience the captivating allure of Pudong District's Lujiazui area in Shanghai as it comes alive with dazzling lights and futuristic skyscrapers. A nighttime walk through this vibrant district offers a mesmerizing blend of modernity and architectural brilliance.
🌆 Tip 1: Admire the Lujiazui Skyline 🏙️🌉 Take a leisurely stroll along the Bund Promenade and witness the iconic Lujiazui skyline in all its glory. Marvel at the towering Shanghai Tower, the Oriental Pearl TV Tower, and other magnificent structures illuminated against the night sky. Capture the breathtaking views and immerse yourself in the grandeur of this cosmopolitan hub.
🍽️ Tip 2: Dine with a View 🍽️🌙 End your evening with a delightful dining experience at one of the many restaurants offering panoramic views of the Pudong skyline. Savor delectable cuisine ranging from traditional Chinese to international flavors, while basking in the mesmerizing cityscape spread out before you.
Michaela (@uncoveringcities) Pearl of the Orient
Shanghai is the financial center of China and one of the most populous cities with over 20 million residents. The skyline includes various modern skyscrapers with their unique architectural designs. Shanghai was an important port for European trade during the 19th century, and the European influence is still present in the buildings along the Bund, the French Concession, and old churches around the city. But Shanghai has a much older history stemming back thousands of years, and there are archaeological sites and museums housing relics that are 5,000 years old - my favorite to visit is the Guangfulin site in the Songjiang district southwest of Shanghai city center. This metropolis holds so much history and culture worth exploring.

East Meets West
Shanghai is where ancient meets modern and East meets West in China. In northwest Jiading, there are old temples and ancient walls from thousands of years ago. Down by city centre, the Bund offers French and British colonial style architecture one one side and views of futuristic skyscrapers one the other. The city offers museums and parks/gardens galore and of course, food from all over the world. Shanghai is massive (population over 29 million) and I can spend over four hours traveling from one end to another, but thankfully there is an expansive public transit system. Try to visit a few different neighborhoods (e.g. Huangpu, Xuhui, Pudong, Jiading, Songjiang, Fengxian) as they all have very different attractions to offer.

1192 Old Shanghai
Stumbled across this neat street in Century Hui Plaza (had to take a few escalators down). Have a snack or grab a bubble tea here while taking in the Old Shanghai vibe during some shopping at the mall. There’s also a few stalls selling knick knacks and people taking photo shoots in qi paos, but the area is primarily food stalls and some small restaurants. It’s not very large.

Taoist Temple in Shanghai Pudong
The eastern side of the river they crosses Shanghai - known as Pudong - is often cited for the modern skyscrapers, innovative museums like the Science and Technology and its business centers.
However, the newly developed area also has room for tradition and heritage.
The Taoist temple located near the eastern river bank is an oasis of peace with little shrines devoted to veneration of the deities and delicate wooden architecture that fits perfectly like Tetris pieces.
If you thought Shanghai could not surprise anymore I would fiercely recommend you to wander the wide avenues of Pudong in the search of some hidden gems such as this Taoist Temple.
#visitshanghai
Jing’an Temple Day & Night
It is impossible to decide whether Shanghai’s Jing’an Temple is more beautiful at day or at night.
The golden roofs and the contrast its traditional Chinese details creates against the mega shopping malls in the background is as impressive as it is awkward.
One would expect tradition and innovation to occupy different spheres of the urban landscape, however, in Shanghai these two concepts are often deeply intertwined.
So it is, that is has become normal for passers-by to stare at Jing’an temple with indifference, it is so common to see it, standing strong in the center of the city that it could go almost unnoticed.
But it is always worth to stop for a moment, take a breath, look at this magnificent temple and rejoice the moment for a bit, before going on with the busy daily life of Shanghai.

Shanghai life is in its alleyways
Walking, or biking, along Shanghai’s maze-like alleyways is one of the best ways to discover a city that moves at a different tempo between its grand avenues and tall skyscrapers and its old brick-walled lane houses and narrow alleyways.
It is in the latter where you discover the soul of Shanghai. The clothes hanging in the street drying up to the intermittent sunshine, the modern start up hubs popping up in between old food stalls, the little doors that give access to the private / yet quite publicly shared life of the neighbors…
This is a lovely Shanghai, one that breathes far from the luxury and the neon lights, but yet one that breathes strong every day it passes.

Shanghai’s M50 Creative Park - Art&Food
Located next to Suzhou creek, the small river that crosses Shanghai horizontally, the M50 Creative Park is a unique art and design hub where to enjoy a day of culture and food.
Plenty of Art Galleries such as Island6 or ShanghArt will fulfill your thirst for an artsy escape whereas the many cafes and restaurants spread in quiet patios are a great choice for bites and sips.
Check out the wall paintings and street sculptures lining up the little corridors by the river, these are a bit hidden as you need to get there through a small walkable pathway in one corner of the area, not easy to find but well worth the effort

Island 6 Art Gallery Shanghai
Island 6 Art Gallery is one of those places that you should definitely visit when in Shanghai.
Located at the heart of M50 Creative Park a hub for design and art venues, Island 6 pushes forward the boundaries of creativity while staying true to the traditional landscapes of Shanghai.
In the artworks you see everyday sceneries of life in Shanghai: scooters, skyscrapers, electric cables, etcetera, juxtaposed to a graphic or video element that highlights inside the painting.
Definitely one place to check out to witness the creative spirit of Shanghai artists.

Attraction: Lujiazui Central Greenland
Location: Shanghai Pudong area
The big buildings of Shanghai are perhaps my favourite part of this magnificent and iconic city. One of the best places to have a picnic and enjoy the sheer beauty of these skyscrapers is across the street at the Greenland park.
From the Greenland park, you can enjoy pristine clean grass. You can enjoy views of the Oriental Pearl Tower and Jin Mao building.
This park is not too touristy and it’s super nice.

A World Class View!
Attraction name: Shanghai World Financial Centre
Location: Lujiazui in Shanghai Pudong
The observation deck of the Shanghai World Financial Centre is one of four observatories in this part of Shanghai. For me, the view here is worth the ticket price and the queues are a lot less of those at the Shanghai Tower.
Advantages of this view is that you can see the Jin Mao tower and the Oriental Pearl Tower in the same shot (you can’t do that in Shanghai Tower). Also, you can get really close up to the glass window and floor…enjoying superb views on the 100th floor.
A must when visiting Shanghai!

Shanghai Disney is perhaps the most popular family attraction in the entire country. With so much to explore and so much to do, it’s no surprise it’s really popular.
With the entrance fee you can enjoy many many exciting rides on rollercoasters. You can enjoy walking into the fairy tale houses and meet life sized Micky Mouse and Goofy.
Another highlight for us is the lunch time and afternoon parade…you can see all your favourite characters perform. We didn’t stay for the fireworks at night but I’ve heard they are a highlight too.
