Shidian travel guide and discussion

In Tengchong. In the courtyard of the Meixi Zaihe Homestay, enjoy a solo soul-cleansing getaway. Heshun is a border town where the breeze is light and the clouds are wispy, and life is peaceful and comfortable. Sitting alone in the pavilion on the top floor of the courtyard, drinking tea and daydreaming, watching the lotus leaves fill the distant pond while locals fish there. The clouds in the sky hang low, and the breeze blows out some sky blue, also blowing open the lush green of the rice fields. In the alley around the corner from the courtyard, locals sell vegetables. Deep in the alley, there are the grand houses of the caravan families, and elders guarding that former glory. 📍Travel info Heshun Ancient Town is located 4 km southwest of the urban area of Tengchong City, Baoshan City, Yunnan Province. It is a famous commercial and cultural town on the Southern Silk Road and a national 5A-level tourist attraction. The ancient town has preserved 600 years of history, blending Central Plains culture, Western culture, and borderland culture. Known for "harmony between scholars and commoners," it is hailed as a "living ancient town" and a "living fossil of ancient Chinese architecture." 🎫Ancient town ticket: CNY 55/person. The ticket is valid for 7 days and allows multiple entries (Note: Before 7:00 AM and after 10:00 PM, if staff are off duty, entry to the ancient town is free). 🏠Meixi Zaihe Homestay: A very exquisite homestay courtyard with local characteristics, where you can experience the tranquility of early morning and night. The pavilion on the third floor is the best viewing platform. 🚗Transportation: You can take a flight to Tengchong Tuofeng Airport or a bus to Tengchong city center, then take a taxi (about CNY 20) or bus No. 6 (about 15 mins) directly to the ancient town. 🚴Transportation within the ancient town: The interior of the ancient town has bluestone roads, and some areas have slopes. It is recommended to wear non-slip, comfortable flat shoes or sneakers. You can explore the ancient town on foot. For longer distances or if you have a lot of luggage, you can choose to take the scenic electric cart (about CNY 10/trip) or a boat. 📷Core attractions · Heshun Library: One of the largest rural libraries in China, featuring a blend of Chinese and Western architecture and a rich scholarly atmosphere, perfect for quiet reading and photo ops. · Shuanghong Bridge: The iconic ancient bridge of the town. Two stone arch bridges resemble double rainbows. The lotus pond under the bridge is perfect for photos in the early morning or evening. · Yuanlong Pavilion: An ancient architectural complex built against the mountain and by the water. Climbing up offers a panoramic view of the ancient town's pastoral scenery and is an excellent spot for watching the sunset. · Heshun Alley: Includes the Great Caravan Museum, Caravan Post Office, etc. It preserves the caravan and overseas Chinese culture, suitable for a slow stroll and taking photos. · Thousand-Hand Guanyin Ancient Tree Cluster: Composed of seven century-old camphor trees with dappled light and shadows, perfect for forest-style photos. · Wild Duck Lake/Xianhe Wetland: The core water area of the ancient town. Accommodation advice 📍Accommodation outside the ancient town: Closer to the entrance of the ancient town, with more convenient transportation and parking, and high cost-performance, suitable for self-driving tourists. ⚠️Best time to visit: Suitable for all four seasons. Spring and autumn have the most pleasant climate. In autumn, you can combine your trip with a visit to Tengchong Ginkgo Village. There is a large temperature difference between morning and evening in the ancient town, so it is recommended to bring a light jacket. During the rainy season (May–October), bring rain gear. The stone roads are slippery, so be careful. There are many stone roads in the ancient town, which is inconvenient for dragging luggage. The ancient town has a low level of commercialization and a strong atmosphere of local life. It is recommended to slow down, wander through the alleys, and feel the slow life and cultural atmosphere of the ancient town without rushing to visit attractions.

Heshun Ancient Town, Tengchong, Yunnan | A slow-paced two-day trip, I finally found the most relaxing vibe of any ancient town in Yunnan Honestly, before coming to Tengchong, I was suffering from "ancient town fatigue"—commercial streets, trendy shops, and cliché photo poses always made me feel like they lacked a sense of authentic living. But Heshun is different. It is not just a backdrop for photos; people actually live here, washing vegetables, doing laundry, and running businesses. Walking on the bluestone paths, with volcanoes behind me, white walls and grey tiles in front, and the sound of streams in my ears, that feeling of "time slowing down" is incredibly real. My top recommendation is not to rush through attractions, but to spend half a day to a full day strolling slowly. In the morning, enter from the ancient town entrance, follow the stone paths deep inside, passing archways, residences, temples, and small bridges. No need to deliberately look for a route; getting lost is actually part of the fun in Heshun. In the afternoon, find a waterside cafe to sit for a while, watch the locals carrying water, chatting, and drying corn. You will find that the sense of life here is much more comfortable than in many commercialized towns. For photo spots, I recommend these: First, the ancient town entrance archway, suitable for that first "I've arrived" travel photo. I suggest going in the morning when there are fewer people and the light is soft. Second, the Wild Duck Lake boardwalk, where you can capture the lake, willow trees, residences, and distant mountains; it is great for atmospheric shots from behind. Third, deep in the stone alleys, the wooden old houses and bluestone paths are great for photos; wearing light-colored clothes looks cleaner. Fourth, by the laundry pavilion, you can capture the stream, the pavilion structure, and local life—just be careful not to be intrusive to the residents. Fifth, the stone steps near Zhongtian Temple, suitable for capturing the layers of the ancient town and the staggered rooftops. Sixth, the small bridge at dusk, very gentle after the lights come on, perfect for atmospheric photos. Here are a few tips to avoid common pitfalls: Heshun is best for a slow stroll, so I do not recommend rushing with a tour group. It is crowded on holidays, so early morning and evening are the best times to shoot. There are many stone paths in the ancient town, making suitcases hard to drag, so wear comfortable shoes. Many residences and riverside areas are local living spaces; observe before taking photos and do not be intrusive. If you want to go to Rehai, I suggest arranging a "Heshun + Rehai" half-day route; do not make a separate trip, as it is too much hassle. Personally, I like Heshun in the early morning the most. Before the tourists are up, small shops are just opening, and the sound of the stream is especially clear. That moment will make you feel: the slowness of Yunnan is truly more than just a slogan.

July and August are the rainy season, with sudden afternoon showers. Be sure to carry an umbrella and non-slip shoes🌂 2. The temperature difference between morning and evening is significant, and it's cool in wetlands and mountains, so remember to bring a light jacket. The plateau's UV rays are strong, so don't skimp on sun protection. 3. Hot air balloons only fly stably in the morning. If you want to experience it, try to go early, as flights may be canceled in the afternoon due to weather. 4. If you don't understand jade, don't buy it casually. Avoid overpriced specialty shops at the entrance of the ancient town and consume rationally. 5. There are many mosquitoes in the mountains and wetlands, so apply mosquito repellent before going out. ✨Sincere recommendation at the end Stop looking for summer retreats in western Yunnan! On the way from Tengchong to Baoshan, we visited the Songshan Anti-Japanese War Site and Huitong Bridge in Longling. About half an hour after leaving Tengchong, at the Longjiang Bridge rest area on the Baoteng Expressway, you can view the Longjiang Bridge spanning the Longjiang Grand Canyon. The viewing platform has a check-in spot, which is very user-friendly. Many people are unaware of the Songshan Anti-Japanese War, but the TV series "My Regiment Commander, My Regiment" has drawn many viewers' attention to this piece of history. I visited here during my 2018 self-driving tour in Yunnan (2018 Yunnan self-driving tour notes available), and this time I brought companions to pay respects. The Songshan scenic area now attracts more visitors, and the infrastructure has been enhanced. The newly built visitor center and parking lot are nearly completed. In the future, you won’t be able to drive directly up; scenic area shuttle buses will be mandatory, though it’s unclear if there will be a fee. After all, many red education bases offer free entry but charge for shuttle buses, a model increasingly replicated in recent years. During the 2018 Yunnan self-driving tour, the main focus was the Burma Road. At that time, I didn’t know much and was unaware that Huitong Bridge is right at the foot of Songshan. In fact, if you travel another 10 kilometers before ascending the mountain along the Nujiang River, you can see Huitong Bridge, which was quite a regret. This time, when descending to Huitong Bridge following navigation, I found it was not the same route used in 2018 to ascend the mountain (the route on the map might be Z001). That route is the original Burma Road surface, a bumpy dirt and gravel road. This time, we traveled on paved roads, though some village roads were narrow but very scenic. The mountains, terraced fields, orchards, crops, valleys, and the Nujiang River truly make a picturesque landscape. There is a parking space right by the roadside at Huitong Bridge. Note the place name here: “Lamong Town, Hongsong Section, Huitong Bridge Site.” If you navigate directly to “Huitong Bridge,” it shows the opposite side of the river, which is inaccessible. The navigation might even point to the upper reaches of the Nujiang River hundreds of kilometers away. Huitong Bridge bore the heavy transport burden of the Burma Road. Its destruction halted the Japanese army’s advance into Yunnan, buying time and space for the war effort. Rebuilding it was part of the counterattack during the war. Today, it stands like a monument spanning the Nujiang River, reminding us not to forget history. Though the mountains and waters are distant, they are still our homeland. There is no direct expressway from Huitong Bridge to Baoshan. County Road M33 runs through the Nujiang Gorge and Gaoligong Mountains. After more than an hour, in Shuichang Township, Shidian County, you will pass the “Burma Road 707 Memorial.” You can stop and check in there before getting back on the expressway to Baoshan. Baoshan City is a blend of old and new, with few ancient relics remaining. We visited the Baoshan Museum and then checked in at Taibaoshan Forest Park, where there is a monument to the fallen anti-Japanese soldiers of western Yunnan. Afterwards, we headed to Qinglong Ancient Street in the northern suburbs of Baoshan. Baoshan’s history is closely tied to its location on the ancient western Yunnan route. Whether it was the ancient “Shu-Shendu Road,” the later “Tea Horse Road,” or the “Burma Road,” Baoshan has always been an important node and post station. Qinglong Street is the best-preserved area reflecting the ancient road’s style in Baoshan. Now a tourist commercial pedestrian street, it attracts many visitors. The street offers common tourist goods as well as Yunnan and Baoshan specialties. Yunzi Go stones originate from Baoshan, well known among Go enthusiasts. Interested friends can also explore Banqiao Town, where Qinglong Street is located, to experience the local vibrant atmosphere. Baoshan · Yunnan

Tanglangchuan, the only outflow of Dianchi Lake and a tributary of the Jinsha River, was historically known as Haikou River (named for the sandbanks in the river resembling a mantis). It stretches 252 kilometers in total, with the section from Haikou to Fumin called Tanglangchuan, and below Fumin it is known as Puduo River. A 40-minute drive from Kunming’s main city leads to the Anning section, the core viewing area of the "Golden Tanglangchuan." In early spring, tens of thousands of acres of rapeseed flowers bloom along both banks, with golden waves contrasting against the blue water and sky. Walking paths wind through the sea of flowers, making every snapshot a picturesque countryside scene. In midsummer, willows sway gently and the river breeze brings coolness; visitors can explore Qinglong Gorge or soak in Anning’s "World’s Number One Hot Spring." Autumn brings rolling waves of rice paddies, and winter offers warm, tranquil sunshine. This area is home to China’s first hydropower station—the Shilongba Hydropower Station—as well as historic sites like Caoxi Temple and the ancient hot spring town. At night, the lights reflect on the water and the evening breeze is gentle. Admission is free. The best time to see the rapeseed flowers is from February to March, with early morning or sunset light ideal for photos. Wear light-colored clothing and bring a thin jacket to guard against temperature changes. 📍 Core Location: Along Tanglangchuan in Anning City, Kunming (Golden Tanglangchuan Scenic Area) 📍 Suggested Photos: Panoramic views of rapeseed fields, riverside walking paths, Shilongba Hydropower Station, night scenes of the hot spring town, Caoxi Temple 📍 Travel Tips: Accessible by car or Anning intercity bus from Kunming West Station; the flower sea area features snack markets and camping zones

Qingping Cave was excavated by Deng Zilong, a military commander during the Wanli period of the Ming Dynasty (1585 AD), after his victory in the anti-Burmese rebellion war. During his leisure time, Deng Zilong carved a cave into a mountain and inscribed the name 'Qingping Cave' on the stone wall, symbolizing the pacification of the turmoil in western Yunnan and the peaceful and prosperous life of people from various ethnic groups. Originally a natural limestone cave, Qingping Cave is majestic and spectacular, with a cool interior that can accommodate a hundred people; there is a stone inside that, when struck, sounds like drum music. There are also stalactites dripping water into 'stone bowls' below, the water in these bowls never dries up; the cave is divided into two halls, north and south, both with extraordinary stone patterns and walls as solid as iron. The north hall has stone beds, stone benches, and a stone-carved Go table, which is said to be where General Deng planned military strategies and rested; the south hall is high and spacious, able to accommodate over a hundred people, and served as the 'barracks' for General Deng's guards. A hole in the center of the cave hall allows sunlight to pour in around noon, and on the external stone wall of the cave, the words 'Leaning on Sword,' 'Hanging Bow,' and 'Archery Practice' are inscribed, implying that General Deng considered potential dangers even in times of safety and maintained a vigilant mindset. On the south hall's stone wall, the inscriptions 'Iron Wall,' 'Silver Vase,' and 'Heavenly Ladder' are three poems praising the stone rocks. Climbing the 'Heavenly Ladder' spirals up to a unique pavilion at the top of the cave, where General Deng used to climb to admire the moon. Standing in the pavilion not only allows one to appreciate the lotus pond in front of the cave, the lush willows on the banks, and the rugged mountains that reflect each other's beauty, but also to gaze upon the ancient town of Yaoguan and the beautiful karst scenery, which is truly refreshing. In front of the cave, the fragrance of lotuses fills the air, and there is a pavilion that seems to fly out from among the lotuses, where it is said that General Deng once sharpened his swords, hence the name 'Sword Sharpening Pavilion.' On the pavilion, he composed a couplet: 'When will the sword extinguish the wind, and from where did the cave fly in?' It is said that General Deng sharpened his sword and composed immortal poems in the pavilion, demonstrating his noble spirit of 'shouldering sharp weapons and being loyal with a brave heart.' These poetic works, despite the vicissitudes of history, still signal to posterity General Deng's passionate, versatile, and extraordinarily intelligent heroic image. On the north side of the cave, a small pavilion was built, housing a stone stele inscribed with 'Elephant Cooking Site' by Li Genyuan, marking the place where General Deng defeated the Burmese elephant troops and cooked elephants to reward his soldiers. To commemorate the soldiers who sacrificed their lives for the country in the battle, and to express admiration for General Deng's military strategies and reverence for his great achievements, in 1587 (the fifteenth year of the Wanli period), the people of Shidian built the 'Commemorative Pavilion for Loyal Martyrs' on the north side of Qingping Cave. In the same year, the Commemorative Shrine for Loyal Martyrs was built to the south of the cave, consisting of a main hall and two wings, forming a quadrangle courtyard with an ancient beam-lifting wooden structure, covering an area of 750 square meters. The main hall is 12.6 meters wide and 8.25 meters deep, with a total of 23 rooms. Inside the hall stands a statue of General Deng, and the right wing houses eight carved lattice doors from the Ming Dynasty's Mocang Temple, which experts call a 'treasure of Central Plains culture in western Yunnan'.
