8 September in Malta 🇲🇹 We accidentally chose one of the best days of the year to explore the Three Cities. It was Victory Day, so we started in Birgu and Fort St Angelo, completely unaware that the Grand Harbour was about to become fiercely competitive. In the afternoon came the traditional Victory Day Regatta: brightly coloured Maltese boats racing across the harbour, with crowds lining the waterfront and entire neighbourhoods passionately supporting their crews. We ended up in Senglea, where the locals took the result considerably more seriously than we did — although after half an hour we were shouting along with everyone else. Then, just as things seemed to be calming down, the church bells started. It was also the Feast of Maria Bambina, and that evening the statue of the Virgin Mary was carried through Senglea’s decorated streets, followed by music, crowds and what seemed to be most of the population. So our quiet day exploring some historic fortifications somehow became boat racing, flags, shouting, church bells, a religious procession and a crash course in Maltese neighbourhood rivalry. Five days was enough; I only wished there was more time. 🏝️ Day 1-2: Valletta & The Three Cities—Getting lost in the "City of Knights" is a joy. Malta's capital is Valletta, a Baroque city built in the 16th century by the Knights of St. John, and also the smallest capital city in the European Union. But small ≠ boring. The Upper Barrakka Gardens were our first stop. Standing here, looking across at the Three Cities, the entire Port Grand is spread out before you. Every day at noon, a cannon salute is fired. You can take an elevator from the end of the garden down to the pier (elevator €1 one way), then spend €3 to take a water taxi across to Vittorioza—the most famous of the Three Cities, and the first base of the Knights Templar upon their arrival in Malta. St. John's Cathedral is a must-see. Its exterior is so simple it almost resembles a fortress, but inside it's breathtakingly magnificent. In 1530 it was erected as a convent church of the Order of St. John but in 1532 a fire destroyed it. In 1681 the foundation stone of the present church was laid, by Gafà. During the Second World War various parts of the church were destroyed and rebuilt later. Inside there are numerous works, the altarpiece by Mattia Preti that represents the tragedy of the martyrdom of San Lorenzo in dark tones. Even the choir benches are fine in European walnut wood with gilding that accompanies the inlay of details. Place of honor for the statue of San Lorenzo that takes up the Spanish tradition of covering statues with brocade vestments, in the statue in question also with precious stones, the silver pedestal recalls the Baroque style, completes the whole a walnut and ebony platform inlaid with orange wood. The staff are rude, the exhibits are poor in quality, lighting and explanations In addition, there is no obvious path to follow to get the maximum amount of information from you visit. You have to wander aimlessly to try and make some sense of it all The worst problem was getting out. Your "tour" ends on the top floor. To get out, a bossy woman points you to a rickety, open staircase made of scaffold poles. My wife suffers from vertigo, and found it frightening. Only when were got to the bottom did someone tell us there was a liff - but that was never offered to us You exit through a "shipyard" experience, complete with noise and light effects, which is very good. The downside is that the commentary is in Maltese, and hence subtitles are projected onto the bare block walls, and these are very difficult to read All in all, it was not what I had expected. We did not eat there but sat outside a harbourside bar and enjoyed a few 2 for 1 Cocktails. Idyllic. We took one of the small private Gondolas across (around 10 minutes) and chose the ferry to return to Valletta. We got the water taxi from Valletta then walked around the city and had a wander right up the waterfront. The views across the harbour to Senglea were lovely and the view from the end of the harbour to Valletta were beautiful. There were some enormous boats moored along the waterfront and it was lined with shops and restaurants.

This seemed to be getting better but then we were told the building will be closing in 15 minutes and rushed out with time to spare. The first 3/4 of the building makes me think they didn’t really know what to put in there as there is no context, just rooms and an assortment of unrelated paintings. The answers may be at the end, but make sure you have plenty of time as 15 minutes doesn’t equal 15 minutes.
