Unlike many Kyoto temples where you can simply walk in, Saiho-ji requires advance reservation. Traditionally, visitors also take part in a Buddhist sutra-copying activity before exploring the garden.
it isn’t as easy to visit as Kiyomizu-dera or Arashiyama.
But that’s exactly the point.
There are no huge crowds, no flashy architecture and no endless souvenir shops.
Just an ancient temple, towering trees, moss-covered stones and the quiet sound of nature.
If Kyoto’s famous temples show you Japan’s architecture, Saiho-ji shows you what happens when architecture slowly becomes part of nature. 🍃🏯🇯🇵

🍃🏯 SAIHO-JI – THE ANCIENT MOSS TEMPLE OF KYOTO THAT FEELS LIKE A FAIRY TALE
#slowtraveling
If you’re looking for a quieter, more mysterious side of Kyoto, Saiho-ji, also known as the Moss Temple, is a place you absolutely shouldn’t miss.
Hidden away in the western part of Kyoto, this ancient Zen temple is famous for one thing above all:
moss. And lots of it. 🌿
🌱 A GARDEN COMPLETELY COVERED IN MOSS
More than 120 varieties of moss grow throughout the temple garden, covering the ground, rocks and tree roots in layers of deep green.
Walking through the garden feels almost surreal. Instead of perfectly manicured lawns, nature is allowed to grow freely, creating an atmosphere that feels ancient and untouched.
