Arriving in Schengen, the sun gently bathed the Moselle, creating a tranquil scene of vineyards and quaint cottages lining the riverbank. The memorial, nestled along the river, a stone's throw from the German-French border, its unique location whispers: this is the starting point of the dream of a borderless Europe. The "Eurostar" sculpture outside the museum shimmers with light, its dotted design symbolizing unity and hope. Entering the memorial, the simple, modern design of the exhibition halls is soothing. The exhibition is clearly divided, unfolding the historical background of the Schengen Agreement, the grand signing ceremony in 1985, and its profound impact on contemporary Europe. I was particularly moved by a series of vintage photos capturing the historic moment when representatives from the five countries signed the agreement aboard the Princess Marie-Astride cruise ship. A special feature is the ability to touch authentic fragments of border fencing. The "European Triangle" monument (at the Luxembourg, Germany, and France border junction) on the riverside outside the museum is a must-see.

As someone who loves history and can spend hours just exploring old churches and ruins, Luxembourg has been on my travel list for a while. I finally managed to spend 2 days there recently. It really is a beautiful place—like a medieval painting with its deep valleys and stone castles—but now that I’ve been, I don’t think I’ll return. First, a bit about the vibe and the logistics because I always look out for these when planning. The weather was quite tricky; even though it was sunny, the wind blowing through the Petrusse Valley was freezing, so you definitely need a windbreaker. Also, be prepared for a massive leg workout. The old town is built on cliffs, so there are endless steep slopes and cobblestone stairs. It honestly reminded me of walking around Sai Ying Pun back home, but much more exhausting. If you’re planning to head out to the suburbs, like Vianden Castle, you have to be very careful with the bus schedules. The buses to the countryside are quite sparse, and if you miss one, you’ll be waiting around for a long time. For the crowds, the famous viewpoint at Chemin de la Corniche was packed with tourists by midday. If you want some quiet time to admire the valley, I highly recommend going around 8 AM. Since my main focus is history, I spent a lot of time at the Bock Casemates and Notre-Dame Cathedral. The cathedral is stunning—very peaceful, with beautiful stained glass. On my second day, I took the bus out to Vianden Castle. It’s a gorgeous medieval fortress overlooking a quiet little town, and I actually preferred the tranquil atmosphere there compared to the city center. However, the main reason I wouldn't come back is the cost. Luxembourg is incredibly expensive, almost on par with Switzerland. A very basic cafe lunch cost me the equivalent of over 150 HKD, which is quite heavy for a student budget. Also, the historic area is very compact. You can easily walk through the main sites in the old town in half a day. After that, there isn’t much else to do. I’m glad I saw the castles and the beautiful valleys, but once is definitely enough. My advice is to only make it a 1 or 2-day stopover if you are already travelling around Belgium or Germany. It’s a lovely detour, but not quite worth a dedicated trip.
