One of the biggest culinary highlights of our trip to North Korea happened at a premium seafood restaurant, a place where VIP guests are often taken and where, rumor has it, the leader himself dines. Atmosphere and interior: The restaurant is housed in a beautiful building overlooking the river. Inside, there are live fish tanks featuring massive sturgeons. The vibe is formal yet incredibly cozy: soft lighting, neat table settings, and attentive service. You can really tell this is one of Pyongyang's "special" spots. Private dining rooms are also available. What we tried: The standout dish — sturgeon sashimi. It was unreal! The freshest, most tender, practically melt-in-your-mouth sashimi made from live sturgeon. The texture and flavor were on a whole other level. We still talk about it as some of the best sashimi we've ever had in our lives. We were also treated to fresh trout (prepared right in front of us) — super tender and delicious. As for traditional dishes, we tried: · Kuksu — cold Korean noodles in an icy broth (a North Korean culinary classic) · Several types of kimchi with varying levels of heat · A variety of seafood and vegetable appetizers Everything was incredibly fresh, expertly prepared, and packed with flavor. Our impressions Honestly, we didn't expect such a high standard in Pyongyang. The sturgeon sashimi and fresh trout were by far the most memorable. It was one of those rare moments when the food in North Korea wasn't just "okay," but absolutely phenomenal. Pro tip: If your tour offers to add this restaurant to your itinerary — go for it, especially if you're a seafood lover. It's better to opt for lunch or dinner here instead of the standard options. The prices are above average, but it's totally worth it. Lunch for 5 people came out to around $100 USD. This is one of those places that gives you a glimpse into a different, much "tastier" side of Pyongyang. Sharing only what was confirmed by our guides during the trip, along with my personal impressions. ▪️ The country is isolated from the global internet, but they have their own intranet called "Kwangmyong." They have their own apps: a marketplace, a messenger, delivery services, ticketing apps, and the like. ▪️ The Supreme Leader is both king and god. Worshipping him is a sign of respect and gratitude. ▪️ There are three main holidays in the country: the Day of the Sun (Kim Il Sung's birthday), the Foundation Day of the DPRK, and Chuseok (the harvest festival). ▪️ Apartments are provided by the state. There are no mortgages or loans. ▪️ Women only wear traditional dresses, known as choson-ot, for their weddings. ▪️ Maternity leave lasts for just 8 months, after which women return to work. ▪️ You can photograph almost anything, except military personnel, military facilities, inside certain museums, and people working in fields or on construction sites. Photographing the latter is considered disrespectful. ▪️ Private cars have been allowed since last year and are marked with yellow license plates. However, most Koreans ride bicycles. ▪️ Almost the entire population is atheist. Religion is replaced by the Juche ideology, which emphasizes self-reliance. ▪️ Perfectionism and gigantism are everywhere. Museums, monuments, and parks are all built to the highest standards. ▪️ There are no international brands in the DPRK. Clothing, shoes, accessories, electronics, cosmetics, and everything else are either locally made or imported from China. ▪️ They have a six-day workweek, meaning Saturday is a regular workday. Workers get 15 days of vacation per year. Two days off are granted for milestone birthdays, and the entire country takes a break after the harvest. ▪️ Tourism is restricted to domestic travel, and even then, permission is required. Locals only travel abroad for official business trips. ▪️ The rumored ban on sunglasses is a myth. We saw North Koreans wearing them, our guides wore them, and there are plenty of videos online proving it. ▪️ Taking local currency out of the country is prohibited, and it's not even given to tourists. ▪️ When taking photos with statues of the leaders, you must stand up straight and not smile. You also cannot crop out any part of the monument in your photos. ▪️ It is strictly forbidden to throw away any printed materials featuring portraits of the leaders. As a tourist, you won't be severely punished, but you will be politely asked not to do it. ▪️ The country has no oil or natural gas reserves and has been under international sanctions for many years. ▪️ Collective responsibility is enforced. Punishment for an individual's crime can extend to their entire family. ▪️ Dog meat soup 🐕 is not an everyday dish; it’s reserved for special occasions. ▪️ Strict haircut regulations are a myth. While you won't see men with long hair or women with very short haircuts, there is still a variety of hairstyles. ▪️ Locals don't wear jeans because they are associated with the US and are considered offensive. The guides didn't explicitly confirm a ban but strongly hinted that wearing them wouldn't be well-received. Tourists wearing jeans, however, are not an issue. ▪️ The rule against walking around alone is officially justified by the language barrier, but it's pretty obvious that's not the real reason. ⠀ And that's the scoop!🙌🏻

· To get here, you need to buy a tour. Fly to Vladivostok. Get a visa. The trip is currently only available to Russian citizens. · Visas are available: free in advance; urgent visas are $50 upon arrival in Vladivostok. Travel history is not important. · A North Korean visa does not affect entry into other countries. However, you can always have a second passport. · Russians have been coming here for a long time. The country reopened in 2024 after COVID-19, and is currently only available to Russian citizens. · Tour prices depend on the program, number of days, and transportation: plane, train, or bus to the DPRK. · Two accredited companies operate the tourism industry; all trips are handled through them. · You can bring everything into the country except literature about the DPRK and drones. There are no restrictions on clothing, but I still recommend observing the rules of decency. · Security checks are random. No one in our group was searched. Phones are not checked. · Wi-Fi is only available to tourists at the hotel. It works perfectly and costs $1.70 for 10 minutes. Most of the country is atheist, yet the temples still stand. They are pristine, beautifully maintained, and... just a little staged. 👀 Take, for example, the Church of the Holy Trinity, the only Orthodox church in the DPRK. Built following Kim Jong-il's visit to Russia as a symbol of friendship, it holds its services in Korean. The priest is local, and the walls are adorned with donated icons. Many bear the signatures of Russian philanthropists and officials. 🔉 The moment we walked in, the voices of a girls' choir rang out. As soon as we left, the doors were firmly shut. It felt as though the church had come alive just for us. ⭐ Next up was a Buddhist temple near the tomb of Wang Geon, founder of the Goryeo dynasty. The resident monk mentioned they have about 300 parishioners here, though by his own admission, there are no more than 10,000 believers in the entire republic. 📚 Having studied at a Buddhist seminary in Pyongyang, he has served at this temple his entire life. The atmosphere is undeniably serene, but even here, you can sense the watchful eye over religion. The temple is open, yet it feels less like a place for the general public and more like a showcase for official delegations and the occasional tourist. 🏠 Our final stop was Pohyon Temple on Mount Myohyang. Founded in the 13th century, it is one of the oldest in the country. A monk chanted a good luck mantra for us and offered us the chance to light some incense. 🗡 Legend has it that in the 16th century, a warrior monk lived here, gathering a militia to fight against the Japanese. His pagoda still stands today. Overall, it was absolutely fascinating to discover that religion not only exists in a "communist" state but is represented by several different faiths.

This itinerary was entirely planned for us, completely out of our hands, but even so, there were a few surprises. 🟢The first day kicked off unexpectedly with greenhouses. Massive complexes where crops are grown without soil. According to the guides, this is the country's new pride and joy. I later found out these greenhouses were built on former military bases. In my opinion, the push to build them traces back to the crisis of the 1990s. 🤩Next up was the Mausoleum of Tangun (단군릉). Legend has it that he founded the first Korean kingdom, Gojoseon, in 2333 BC. North Korea claims this is his actual burial site. The tomb was built in 1994, and honestly, there's not much to say about it. ⭐The most impressive sight was the Juche Tower (주체사상탑). It's a 170-meter-tall tower topped with a glowing torch, offering panoramic views of Pyongyang. From the top, you can spot the famous pyramid-shaped Ryugyong Hotel (류경호텔), which has been under construction for over 30 years. 🎭A circus performance was also on the agenda. No animals. Just acrobats, gymnasts, and Young Pioneers. Tourists were seated in one section, while the Pioneers and military personnel sat in another. Even the applause felt choreographed. 🏌️♀️More surprises awaited at the golf course. Military personnel greet you at the entrance, the course is flawless, and an instructor even watches closely to make sure you don't drive the ball too far. Rumor has it that Kim Jong Il himself used to play here. 🚀The tour wrapped up at the souvenir shops. They sell absolutely everything: porcelain, pins, propaganda posters, and even inflatable missiles. They take foreign currency—dollars or yuan, and occasionally rubles. Leaving the tour, it felt less like I had visited a real country and more like a highly curated museum exhibit. You can only film, touch, or ask questions if you're given explicit permission.

A country that feels like "another world"—no WiFi, no phone signal, and you "can't roam freely." This is "North Korea"..... ✈️ 4-day, 3-night trip Starting from China → Pyongyang, you must travel with a tour group. As soon as you step off the plane and take out your camera... you are immediately ordered to delete all photos on your phone. That’s when you realize, "This place is unlike anywhere else in the world." Photography: You can only take pictures at authorized spots. Officials are everywhere, and most of the time, you have to sneak photos from inside the tour bus. The most striking feature: The subway system is over 100 meters deep (one of the deepest in the world). Inside, it’s incredibly luxurious, with chandeliers, marble columns, and large murals—it feels like an "underground museum." Another key location is the JSA (Joint Security Area), the border between North and South Korea. It’s just a thin concrete line, but it’s truly a "line dividing worlds." It feels like stepping into a game where everything is frozen in the 70s–80s. Yet, there are still moments that remind you... this is "the real modern world." Accommodation: Yanggakdo Hotel, with high-floor views of the entire city. The night view is beautiful... but eerily quiet. What stands out the most isn’t the hardship but the "strange feeling"—like the familiar world has been completely reset. Some places... aren’t meant to be understood but are meant to be "seen with your own eyes."

The itinerary is packed, so be prepared for lots of walking and listening. Digital Etiquette: Download offline maps and dictionaries in advance. Internet in hotels (like "Yanggakdo") is paid and expensive. Currency: Cash only! Bring small denominations of EUR, USD, or CNY. Local won is not given to tourists, and Visa/Mastercard are just plastic here. Photography: Always ask your guide before taking pictures. Until 2020, North Korea gradually opened up to foreign tourism. Although trips remained strictly organized and controlled, the number of tourists grew, especially from China. New routes appeared, infrastructure in tourist areas improved, and some hotels even began to meet international standards. However, since 2020, the situation has changed dramatically. Border closure and a complete halt: With the onset of the coronavirus pandemic, North Korea was one of the first in the world to completely close its borders. Tourism came to a near halt. Foreigners were banned from entering, and those already in the country were urgently evacuated. For several years, North Korea became one of the most closed countries in the world, even by its own standards. Resumption of tourism (2024–2026): Tourism gradually resumed only in 2024. However, this tourism is quite different from what it was before the pandemic: · The number of tourists has significantly decreased. While tens of thousands of people (mostly Chinese) previously visited the country annually, the flow is now much smaller. • The composition of tourists has changed. The number of Russians has noticeably increased. This is due to the strengthening of relations between the two countries. Western tourists are virtually nonexistent. · Control has tightened. When I researched the information and spoke with those who have already traveled since the reopening, many noted the following: · Less freedom. While previously, in some cases, it was possible to interact a little more with locals or take photos, now guides have become more vigilant. · Fewer routes. Some previously accessible sites and regions remain closed to foreigners. · Stricter selection. Tour companies have become more cautious about accepting tourists. What remains unchanged: Despite all the changes, the basic rules for traveling to North Korea remain the same: · Travel only as part of an organized group; · Mandatory accompaniment by local guides; · No independent walking; · Strict controls on photography and interaction with locals. Is it worth going in 2026? If you're looking for the most unusual and controlled tourist experience, North Korea offers it. However, it's important to understand that this isn't a classic trip. You won't be able to freely explore the country, meet locals, or deviate from the itinerary. A trip these days is more like a tightly organized tour, with almost everything planned out in advance. For some, this may be an interesting experience, while for others, it may be too restrictive and stressful. If you do plan a trip, I recommend carefully choosing a reputable tour operator and researching the current regulations in advance. North Korea is not a place to visit spontaneously.

When we traveled to North Korea, we expected to see mostly monuments and official sites. But what struck us most was Pyongyang—a city where everyday life unfolds, completely unlike what you see on the news. What's surprising about Pyongyang: The city is clean, well-maintained, and very green. The streets are wide, cars drive according to the rules, and people are dressed neatly. In the mornings, you can see residents exercising, going to work, or going to school. Particularly striking is how many people ride bicycles—it's one of the main modes of transportation. We saw children in beautiful school uniforms, elderly people strolling in parks, and women in traditional, colorful dresses. Everything looks very organized, yet humane. Atmosphere on the streets: There are almost no advertisements in Pyongyang, but there are plenty of portraits and slogans. Music from loudspeakers, clean sidewalks, and a lack of chaos—all this creates a very unusual feeling. You constantly find yourself thinking you've entered another world, where time seems to flow a little differently. It's especially interesting to watch people in the subway and in the squares. Everyone smiles at tourists, and many children wave. It creates a warm and at the same time slightly surreal impression. Our thoughts after the trip: Pyongyang leaves no one indifferent. It lacks the usual tourist gloss, but rather the real, unvarnished life of the country, with its own rules and rhythm. It's a city that makes you think, compare, and better understand how different societies can be. Here are the most important and fascinating spots you should definitely add to your itinerary. Top must-see attractions: Victorious Fatherland Liberation War Museum: A massive museum dedicated to the 1950–1953 Korean War. It features a vast display of military hardware, aircraft, ships, and captured American equipment. Easily one of the largest and most impressive museums in Pyongyang. Mansudae Grand Monument: A grand plaza featuring colossal bronze statues of Kim Il Sung and Kim Jong Il. This is the capital's most symbolic and solemn site. It is always bustling with people coming to lay flowers. Memorial Museum of Combat Feats at the Overseas Military Operations: A modern museum opened in 2026, dedicated to the events of the military operation near Kursk. It details recent events and the role of North Korean forces. A fascinating stop for anyone keeping up with modern history. Mansudae Embroidery Workshop This is where they craft stunning silk embroideries that look just like real paintings. You can watch the artisans at work and pick up some souvenirs. Korean Art Gallery: A large collection of North Korean fine art, ranging from classical pieces to contemporary works. Many of the pieces are vibrant and carry strong ideological messages. Pyongyang State Circus A professional show featuring acrobatics, clowns, animal acts, and an ice skating segment at the finale. It makes for great evening entertainment. Shooting Range: A popular spot for tourists. You can try your hand at shooting various types of firearms under the close supervision of an instructor. Dining in North Korea is a chapter of its own on any trip. It's both familiar (sharing a lot with South Korean cuisine) and incredibly unique. We sampled both everyday local fare at suggested eateries and meals at specialty restaurants, and here's what you can expect. We stayed at the Yanggakdo Hotel, where we were only served breakfast. All our other meals took place at specially recommended restaurants outside the hotel. Must-try dishes: · Kuksu (국수): Cold noodles in an icy broth—a refreshing and highly traditional dish. It's served with vegetables, an egg, and sometimes meat. · Bulgogi (불고기): Marinated beef grilled right at your table. This tender meat with its signature sweet flavor is a top recommendation. · Pajeon: Pan-fried cabbage or green onions in an egg batter with various fillings. It's delicious, filling, and has a great texture. · Kimchi and side dishes: Various types of kimchi, pickled veggies, fern bracken, bean sprouts, and other traditional sides—they're always served in huge portions. · Sturgeon sashimi: The absolute highlight of our trip. Incredibly fresh sashimi from a live sturgeon at a premium seafood restaurant—tender with a clean, crisp taste. It left a lasting impression, and we’ve never seen anything quite like it anywhere else. The Pyongyang Metro is a landmark in itself. It's very different from anything we've seen before and definitely deserves a visit. What's special about the Pyongyang Metro: It's one of the deepest metro stations in the world—some stations are over 100 meters underground. These depths were built primarily for military reasons. The stations are decorated in a very formal manner: marble, enormous chandeliers, colorful mosaics depicting revolutionary scenes, portraits, and impeccable cleanliness. Each station looks like an underground palace in the socialist realist style. Tourists are usually shown the most beautiful stations—Puhŭng and Ch'ŏllima. The trains are old but well-maintained, with loud announcements in Korean. Our observations: When you descend the escalator and exit onto the platform, you experience a very unusual sensation. Everything around you looks monumental and slightly surreal. It's especially interesting to watch locals commuting to work, reading newspapers, and socializing. It's one of the rare moments when you get a glimpse into everyday life in Pyongyang. Helpful information: · The metro operates from approximately 5:30 AM to 11:30 PM. · Tourists can only ride with guides and only at authorized stations. · Tickets are a nominal fee. · Photography is permitted, but with restrictions. ‼️Tip: Be sure to ask to include the metro in your itinerary.
