✨ Detailed guide to 5 hidden gems
1️⃣ Jinci Temple | A quiet Tibetan Buddhist temple in the bustling south of the city (30 mins)
📍 Address: No. 899, North Section of Jiannan Avenue, Wuhou District, adjacent to Jincheng Lake
🎫 Admission: Free, no reservation required
🌟 Highlights: A quiet, lesser-known temple in the south of Chengdu. Red walls and dark tiles are paired with Tibetan prayer flags, blending Han and Tibetan architecture. Compared to Wenshu Monastery or Daci Temple, there are very few tourists here, making it perfect for quiet worship and taking "new Chinese-style" photos 📸. After visiting the temple, you can take a stroll along Jincheng Lake.
2️⃣ Tiexiang Temple Water Street Phase II | Chengdu's version of a Jiangnan water town (1 hour)
📍 Address: No. 88, Tiexiang Temple Road, Wuhou District, a 10-minute drive from downtown
🎫 Admission: Open-air block, free throughout
🌟 Highlights: Small bridges, flowing water, pavilions, and waterside terraces. A water system runs through the entire block, featuring new Chinese-style courtyards paired with trendy cafes ☕️. Reflections on the water + blue-tiled white walls—you can capture that water town vibe without traveling to Jiangnan! The block has moderate foot traffic during the National Day holiday, with plenty of tea houses and dining bars, perfect for a mid-trip break and photos.
3️⃣ Guangyan Zen Temple | A millennium-old temple in the forests of Fengqi Mountain (1 hour, approx. 1-hour drive)
📍 Address: Top of Fengqi Mountain, Jiezi Ancient Town, Chongzhou
🎫 Admission: No general admission fee, only a 2 yuan cleaning fee
🌟 Highlights: A Jin Dynasty temple hidden in thousands of acres of primeval forest, with towering ancient cypresses blocking the sun—a natural forest oxygen bar 🌲. Red walls, ancient temples, and stone steps in the forest make for perfect ancient-style photos. The mountain trail is gentle, making it stress-free for family hiking, and you can overlook the entire forest from the top.
4️⃣ Yuantong Ancient Town | A pristine, millennium-old town at the confluence of three rivers (1.5 hours, approx. 1.2-hour drive)
📍 Address: Juyuan Village, Yuantong Town, Chongzhou
🎫 Admission: Free entry, all guild halls and old houses are free to visit, parking is only 10 yuan/day
🌟 Highlights: A millennium-old wharf town known as "Little Chengdu," where the Wenjin, Wei, and Bo rivers meet 🌊. The bluestone old streets, Huijiang stone arch bridge, and the Chinese-Western style Huang Family Courtyard and Luo Family Courtyard are all authentic. Local residents have lived here for generations, and there is almost no commercial hawking. You can sit by the river with a covered-bowl tea for an entire afternoon 🍵.
5️⃣ Mingyue Village | An artistic village in a sea of ten thousand acres of tea (1.5 hours, approx. 1.5-hour drive)
📍 Address: Mingyue Village, Ganxi Town, Pujiang County
🎫 Admission: Free entry to the village; pottery and tie-dye experiences are at your own expense
🌟 Highlights: An artistic village surrounded by tea gardens and bamboo forests, with 3,000 acres of rolling tea fields 🍃. Pottery workshops and indigo dyeing studios can be found everywhere. You can cycle along the tea mountain greenway and try your hand at pottery making and plant tie-dyeing. Waiting for the sunset in the tea fields in the evening creates an incredible atmosphere—a must-visit for artistic youth!

💡 National Day travel tips
1️⃣ Transportation: Self-driving for the whole trip, all locations have free/low-cost parking; the farthest, Mingyue Village, is strictly within a 1.5-hour drive, no rushing throughout the trip~
2️⃣ Avoiding crowds: Skip Jinli, Kuanzhai Alley, and the main street of Jiezi. Jinci Temple, Yuantong Ancient Town, and Mingyue Village are all local-approved spots with few tourists during holidays.
3️⃣ Clothing and gear: Wear non-slip flat shoes for forest hiking and bring mosquito repellent; wear light-colored dresses for temples and water towns—Hanfu or new Chinese-style outfits look better in photos 👗; it's cool in the mountains in the evening, so bring a light jacket.
4️⃣ Consumption reminder: 4 out of the 5 locations are completely free, with only a 2 yuan cleaning fee at Guangyan Zen Temple; handicraft experiences are optional, overall costs are extremely low, with no hidden fees.
5️⃣ Alternative plan: If you don't want to drive to Pujiang, you can replace the last stop with Yangping Bamboo Sea in Pengzhou, where you can hike for free in ten thousand acres of bamboo forest—perfect for a short trip to get some fresh air.
