Wat Phra Yai the Big Buddha Temple
In the Northeast of the island of Koh Samui you can find the Big Buddha, completely covered by gold.
Deity sitting in traditional lotus pose. This is the island's key sacred place, its soul and patron. Although it is located on a small adjacent island connected to the Samui Road. There is a temple in the complex where a monk can tie a rope amulet "Sai Son" on your hand.
Big Buddha is technically on its own little island Koh Fan but you will barely notice when you visit and it sits within Wat Phra Yai which comprises larger grounds with outbuildings, quiet areas for contemplation and a selection of tourist shops.
For the Thai people, it is a place of calm, security and tranquility, they come to ask for sins or just gather energy.

Koh Samui's majestic Big Buddha
Whichever part of Thailand you find yourself in, you'll come across temples, altars, and statues of Buddha. Many places in Thailand are famous for their "Big Buddha" statues/complexes, and Koh Samui has its own as well. Though not as big as Phuket's, it is still imposing (12m tall!), majestic, and offers stunning views of the whole island.
Situated in the northeast of the island, Wat Phra Yai (lit. Big Buddha Temple) offers its own shopping area at the foot of the stairs leading up to the statue. At its base are also many altars and stalls selling amulets and alms to sustain the monks living there. Although this was built in 1972, it was only recently that the statue had a Buddhist wheel of life installed on its back - and it looks amazing.
Although you won't need a full day to visit this Big Buddha, it's definitely a must-see in Samui. Locals have also mentioned that the sunset is stunning from here - so go at that timing!
Tips for visiting Big Buddha (Samui)
- Dress modestly and appropriately
- The climb and the hot weather might be tough, so stay hydrated and use sunscreen

Pa Ya Temple in Koh Samui
🌈#Travel Memories - KO SAMUI
The famous Wat Phra Yai on Koh Samui, with a 12-meter-tall golden Buddha statue, has become a local landmark.
Opening hours: 9:00-17:00
Play time: recommended 1 hour.
🔵Location: Bo Phut, Koh Samui, Surat Thani
Located on a small island by the Big Buddha Beach. The temple is located on Koh Fan Island, near Bangrak Beach (Big Buddha Beach). Originally, there was no road between the beach and the temple, but later a road was built by land reclamation, allowing people to reach the temple.
🔵Transportation: You can take a songthaew from Nathon Town to Bophut Beach, and then ask the driver to go to Bangrak Beach, also known as Big Buddha Beach, for a negotiated price of about 40 Thai baht. The temple is connected to Big Buddha Beach and can be reached on foot in 15 minutes from the beach, or by car in just 5 minutes.
🔵Landmark: Inside the temple stands a magnificent 12-meter-tall golden Buddha statue, which can be seen from any angle when approaching Koh Samui.
🔵Ticket price: Free
🔵Surroundings: In addition to the Golden Buddha, there are also sculptures themed with deities and mythological stories inside the temple. The surrounding area of the temple is a market selling handmade crafts made of shells. In addition, you can also buy roof tiles in the temple, which cost about 200 baht per piece. You can write your wishes on the tiles, and the temple will regularly use these tiles to repair and update the roof.
🔵Attention: Shoes need to be taken off under the stairs. For girls, clothing should not be too revealing. It is recommended to bring a scarf or jacket.

360° view Buddha 🌊
This is a very special place in Koh Samui, very difficult to get to and is a hard way of driving, not easy, but worth it since the view is amazing, the temple is simple and the big Buddha is beautiful, the snake shaped stairs are also very special

Wat Phra Yai at Samui
#passionpassport
Wat Phra Yai means Big Buddha Temple.
We stopped here to visit on our way to another part of the island and it was worthwhile. The temple is impressive and a wonderful reflection of the local peoples faith. There are a number of cafes around the temple that offer authentic Thai food at very cheap prices. There are also many souvenier shops around. One thing I regreted was I never step up.
Lesson: If you’ll be in a new place, make the most of it.
There is no entrance fee as well as parking fee.
If there’s one rule to remember when visiting Thai temples, it’s to cover your shoulders and knees.
This is meant to both both sex’s, although usually it’s more focused on the women to be fully covered.

“Big Buddha Temple sits on a small rocky island”
know locally as Wat Phra Yai, its golden, 12-metre-tall seated Buddha statue was built in 1972 and remains one of the island’s most popular attractions.
the big Buddha sits in the mara posture, with the left hand’s palm up resting on the lap and the right hand facing down, the fingers hanging over the knee and grazing the ground. it depicts a time during Buddha’s journey to enlightenment where he successfully subdued the temptations and dangers thrust at him by the devil-figure Mara by meditating and remaining calm. the pose is a symbol of steadfastness, purity and enlightenment.

Pattaya is a city on Thailand’s eastern Gulf coast known for its beaches. A quiet fishing village as recently as the 1960s, it’s now lined with resort hotels, high-rise condos, shopping malls, cabaret bars and 24-hour clubs. Nearby, hillside Wat Phra Yai Temple features an 18m-tall golden Buddha. The area also features several designer golf courses, some with views of Pattaya Bay.

Big Buddha Temple is one of the landmarks of Koh Samui and the most famous temple in the area. In fact, the temple is very small, and a golden Buddha with a height of 12 meters is enshrined in the middle. Because there is no high-rise building on Koh Samui, this golden Buddha statue can be seen from the air and nearby open space. After a long flight of stairs, in the front is the place where the Buddha is located. The Big Buddha Temple is mainly surrounded by a small square around the Buddha. From the corridor on the side of the Big Buddha statue, you can also see the scenery of Bo Phut Beach, which is an excellent place to watch the sunset from. There is also a four-faced Buddha below the statue of the Buddha. Although it is not as popular as tourist attractions in Bangkok, some people still come here to worship.

Who says Koh Samui is just about the sea? Come check out the temples on the island
Wouldn't you be surprised? While others teach you to go to Koh Samui in Thailand for a beach holiday, I take you to the island to see temples.
There are two major temples on Koh Samui, which are less than a 5-minute drive from each other, and it's also just a ten-plus minute walk, so the order of visiting is not limited.
🚢Koh Samui Transportation Guide:
1. You can take a direct flight from Bangkok to Koh Samui. The island itself has an airport, but it's quite small, so the ticket prices are high and flights are few. If you don't mind and want to save time, you can choose to fly directly ✈️
2. You can take a flight from Bangkok to Surat Thani Airport, and then purchase a combined bus and ferry ticket from the airport to reach the island. The whole journey takes about two to three hours.
🙏🏻Temple 1: Our first stop is the Big Buddha Temple, which not only has the famous golden Big Buddha but is also a seaside viewing platform. There is no admission fee for the Big Buddha Temple, and you need to climb a flight of stairs before reaching the golden Big Buddha. After that, you can feel the grandeur of the Big Buddha up close. In addition to overlooking the beautiful Andaman Sea, planes occasionally fly low overhead. Praying, enjoying the view, and feeling the sea breeze are all good choices here.
🙏🏻Temple 2: The second stop, the Thousand-Hand Guanyin Temple, is different. This is a larger temple complex. On one side of the lake is the huge Thousand-Hand Guanyin statue, and on the other side is an equally large Laughing Buddha statue, which are quite photogenic. In the middle of the lake, there is also a splendid Buddha house, which is very suitable for sitting quietly and meditating. If you want to pray but are worried about not understanding Thai customs, there is also a Chinese temple prepared here for everyone to make wishes and pray.
It is recommended to visit these two temples on Koh Samui in the early morning or afternoon to avoid the high temperatures of the Thai sun and not to miss out on fun at the beach during the day. Have you learned this?

Big Buddha Temple (Wat Phra Yai)
#samuiisland Very beautiful but small temple. The view over the sea is beautiful. As are the statues and temples. Down next to the stairs sits a monk, who wishes you good luck.
I really enjoyed my visit here. I was not expecting much but, positively surprised once I arrived. The temple itself is beautiful and spans across multiple levels. At the top where the large Buddha Statue is situated you have a nice view of the surrounding area. Around the temple there are some souvenir shops and small kiosks and cafes to get some refreshments.
Entrance is free. There are several market stalls found in the square at the bottom of the temple.

Big Buddha Temple in Koh Samui
Big Buddha Temple (Wat Phra Yai), No.2 on the list of temple attractions in Koh Samui.
The Big Buddha Temple is located on Big Buddha Beach on the north coast of Koh Samui, and is the most famous temple and landmark building on Koh Samui. You can see this 15-meter-high golden Buddha from afar.
Here you can worship Buddha devoutly, ring the bell for blessings, and also enjoy the sea and the scenery.
Due to time constraints, I didn't get to the temple at the foot of the Big Buddha, I hope there will be another chance...

Beaming Big Buddha in Phuket Thailand
If you like ancestral historical places and views of the city, you must visit Big Buddha in Phuket Thailand. Considered as home to numerous locals, this place truly has the goosebumps feels in it. There are about 1,000 steps before you can reach the top of the Big Buddha. I would suggest to wear your most comfortable rubber shoes as you would need to go around the place to make the most of it. If you’re looking for any souvenirs, there are also miniature Buddha’s you can take home as a tourist memory. Overall, the experience was great. It gets somewhat cold at the top around 3PM so please bring a light coated jacket #thailand

The Great Buddha Temple of Samui is the most famous temple in Koh Samui and a landmark of the island. The temple worships a large Buddha statue. This 12-meter-high statue of a golden statue is clearly visible in the air and on land several kilometers away. Temples are not allowed to wear shoes, nor can they wear slings and shorts. If they are too exposed, they will be required to wrap them up. Fortunately, I wore a sunscreen shirt with sleeves and I was not asked to pack them. There is a circle around the Buddha statue. It is said that all knocking will bring good luck to yourself and it is very effective. The temple, which is dedicated to the Buddha, is built on a hilltop and looks up. The surrounding waters and nearby islands have a panoramic view.
