⌚️Time: 16/11/25 - 21/11/25 On the 15th, flew from Melbourne to Launceston, then took the Overland Track transport bus to Cradle Mountain. Got the track pass in advance at the visitor center and stayed one night at Discovery Parks. Set off early the next day. The bus from Launceston only runs at 6 AM and 12 PM, and it takes about two and a half hours, so you either stay one night in Launceston or one night at Cradle Mountain. Staying in Launceston might be better since Cradle Mountain is very remote; besides two hotels, there’s nothing else, and only one place to eat. It’s quite boring after arriving in the afternoon. 📹Route: From the starting point to Narcissus Hut, skipped Win Ridge on the fifth day, so completed 65 km in 5 days. On the sixth day, took the ferry to Lake St. Clair in the morning. Only visited Lake Will on the fourth day; didn’t do other side walks. The official itinerary has longer distances only on the first and third days; other days are quite short. If you don’t have much time, you can shorten the trip. On the last day, it’s still possible to finish at Narcissus and catch the 2 PM bus. Ferry tickets can be booked in advance but require an AUD bank transfer. If that’s inconvenient, you can pay cash on site, then after the ride, pay at the café’s front desk (completely on the honor system). ☁️Weather: The weather on the mountain changes very quickly—wind, rain, snow, and sun can switch at any time. Temperatures range from about 2 to 10°C, around 5-6°C in the morning, 8-10°C in the afternoon, and about 8°C at night in the huts. I used a G700 sleeping bag, which was barely enough; a G1000 is better. The wind is strong at the summit, and rain makes it very uncomfortable. Clothes must be windproof and waterproof. Backpacks aren’t waterproof, so put your stuff in waterproof bags. 🤩Scenery: This is a national park and nature reserve, with a focus on its pristine ecology rather than spectacular sights. Most of the trail goes through rainforest, and visibility isn’t far. But it’s nice to see such well-protected natural ecology, and more importantly, to feel it—look, listen, and feel. 📵Environment: Protecting the ecological environment is the most important aspect of the Overland Track. What impressed me most was that all toilet waste is collected in sealed containers and flown out by helicopter. The entire track is built using native materials, mainly wood. Of course, anti-slip wire mesh is laid on top. I only saw one bridge pier and the base of a hut made with concrete. All materials are transported by helicopter. There’s no man-made trash on the trail, the best I’ve seen anywhere I’ve hiked, even better than hiking routes in Japan. The huts’ cleanliness is maintained by hikers themselves; tables must be wiped clean after use, and you have to take off your hiking boots before entering. Australians even like to go barefoot, which is surprising in such cold weather. Luckily, I brought slippers. 👩Hikers: Only 34 people can hike the track each day, so the people you see in the huts are basically the same every day. Foreigners like to chat and socialize, but I didn’t know what to talk about, so I just greeted them simply. Everyone was very friendly and gave a great impression.
