Kochi | The clearest sea might not be in Okinawa.
🌊 The clearest sea in Japan might not be in Okinawa
📍 Kashiwajima, Otsuki-cho, Hata-gun, Kochi Prefecture, Japan
On a clear day, the water visibility reaches 40 meters,
making the fishing boats in the harbor look like they are floating in mid-air.
👍 Recommendation: Visit in the morning after a few consecutive sunny days.
❓️ Reason: Kashiwajima is famous for its crystal-clear water; the sea looks dull in bad weather.
💴 Cost: Free entry to the island, snorkeling gear rental is around 2,000 JPY.
🚃 Public Transit: Kochi Station → JR Tosa Kuroshio Railway → Sukumo Station → Taxi to Kashiwajima
⏰ Approx. 2 hours 40 minutes
💴 Approx. 7,000 JPY
⚠️ Note: Bus services around Kashiwajima are very infrequent, so relying solely on public transit isn't recommended.
4 recommended things to do in [Kashiwajima]:
1️⃣📸 Take photos at Kashiwajima Fishing Port
The water is incredibly clear on sunny days,
allowing you to capture the "floating boat" effect.
2️⃣🤿 Snorkel at Ushiromahama Beach
Right by the shore, you can spot:
🐠 Tropical fish
🪸 Coral reefs
If you're lucky, you might even encounter sea turtles.
3️⃣🚗 Drive across Kashiwajima Bridge
Enjoy crystal-clear ocean views on both sides of the bridge.
4️⃣🍣 Try Kochi's specialty: "Katsuo no Tataki"
A signature dish of Kochi:
Lightly seared bonito,
served with garlic slices and soy sauce.
If you want to see the beautiful sea in Japan but want to avoid the crowds in Okinawa,
be sure to save this post!

This is not the Mediterranean, it's Kochi, Japan!
Discover the "Transparent Sea" at Kashiwajima.
Hidden in the Shikoku region, Kashiwajima in Kochi Prefecture is a stunning, lesser-known gem often referred to as "Japan's last clear stream" and "Mirror of the Sky."
The purity of this place often amazes Japanese people, likening it to Lampedusa Island in the Mediterranean. It's a secluded paradise that even many locals have yet to visit.
Recommended Destination: Kashiwajima, Kochi Prefecture, Japan
Highlights:
The most striking feature of Kashiwajima is its incredibly clear waters (Photo 1). On sunny days, fishing boats docked at the harbor appear to float in mid-air, with their shadows vividly cast on the sandy seabed (Photo 2). The warm waters here are home to over a thousand species of tropical fish and vibrant coral reefs, making it a secret haven for diving enthusiasts. The island retains its rustic fishing village charm, with no large shopping malls, just a few cozy guesthouses and breathtaking ocean views (Photos 3, 4).
Getting There:
This is a true hidden gem that requires some patience to reach.
By Train: Take the JR Dosan Line to "Sukumo Station."
By Bus: From Sukumo Station, transfer to the Kochi Southwest Transportation Bus heading to "Kashiwajima," approximately a 1-hour ride.
By Car (Recommended): Drive from Kochi City Center for about 3 hours. Though the journey is long, the scenic Kochi coastline along the way makes it perfect for a road trip.
Personal Impressions and Tips:
Personal Impressions: The first time I saw a boat "floating in the air," I truly doubted my eyes. There are no noisy tour groups here, just the sound of waves. Sitting quietly by the sea, watching the interplay of different shades of blue, the sense of tranquility is unmatched by any popular tourist spot.
Tips:
1. Timing is key. To capture the "floating boat" effect, visit between 11:00 AM and 1:00 PM when the sunlight directly hits the seabed and the sea surface is calm.
2. Book in advance. Accommodations on the island are very limited, so make reservations several months ahead. If fully booked, consider staying in nearby Sukumo City and driving over.
3. The best time to visit is summer (July to September) when the sea temperature is just right.

Escape the heat to Kashiwajima
Amidst the scorching heat of the big city, I decided to flee the chaos and head to Kashiwajima, a small island in the southern part of Kochi Prefecture. The island is brimming with pristine nature and crystal-clear waters that reveal the coral reefs below. There, I discovered a small wooden café nestled by the coast, open to the gentle sea breeze.
Wooden tables are arranged under the shade of pine trees, accompanied by the sound of waves crashing against the shore and the aroma of freshly brewed coffee. The heat I carried from the capital gradually faded away. Every element of the atmosphere seemed to soothe the soul, encouraging a slower pace of life, free from the rush of the ticking clock.

[An island with a beach with extremely clear water]
📍Kashiwajima, Kochi Prefecture
Kashiwajima, Kochi Prefecture, is surrounded by waters so clear that it looks as if the boat is floating in the air.
You can observe corals and colorful tropical fish even in shallow waters, making it perfect for swimming, fishing, and marine activities.
Kashiwajima is a small island in Otsuki Town, on the southwestern tip of Kochi Prefecture, with a circumference of about 4km and connected to the Otsuki Peninsula by two bridges.
The beautiful emerald green waters surrounding the island are noted for their high transparency throughout the year.
The reason for this is that the Kuroshio Current means that there are almost no impurities such as plankton and sediment in the sea, and there are no large rivers nearby, so domestic wastewater does not flow into the sea.
Kashiwajima does not have a swimming beach and is free swimming, so there is no particular date for the beach opening, but it is crowded with many beachgoers in the summer.

A trip to Kochi with amazing views🧡 I visited some amazing spots🚗✨
I visited some breathtaking spots in Kochi.
Trip to Kashiwajima at the end of Obon.
After two years, Kashiwajima still has the truly beautiful emerald blue sea 🏝️🩵💚
I was very satisfied to meet a dolphin family 🐬😆
On the second day of the Kochi trip, we went to Shikoku Karst.
It started to rain heavily on the way, and we thought about giving up, but luckily the rain stopped near the summit, and we saw a double rainbow 🌈🌈
It was so cool that it made me wonder if this was really Shikoku, and it was another spectacular view 🏔️
I want to come back on a sunny day ☀️✨
And the last photo is of a creature that looks like Totoro, which we found while driving from Shikoku Karst to the Ehime side 😚
It might be a bit scary if seen at night 🤣

[Kochi] The emerald green island at the southwestern tip of Kochi
📍 Kashiwajima, Kochi
Otsuki Town is located in the southwestern part of Kochi Prefecture.
Kashiwajima is a small island with a circumference of about 4km that floats on the southwestern tip of the island. 🏖
It is famous for the image of a ship floating in the sea and has been talked about as a beautiful island, but I have heard some people say that it is beautiful and others that it is just average, so I thought I would go there while I was there🚗✨
It is about 3 hours from Kochi Station and Kochi Airport, so it is not easy to access.
This place was not the main purpose of our trip, so we did not have much time and we arrived at Kashiwajima after 4pm🤣🤣
The sea was beautiful, but because of the time we were there we could not see the real Kashiwajima blue,🤣💙
But it is certainly beautiful!!! 🤍
I thought it would have been even more beautiful if we had gone during the day, but...🙄
It's a spot where you can also dive and snorkel🤿🏝
(We went at this time, but we also went into the sea! lol)

[Kochi] Travel to the Caribbean without a passport🇲🇽
Meet Mariko, the Weekend Glamour Traveler (@mariko000001), who introduces us to a stunning destination in Shikoku that rivals the Caribbean Sea. You don't need to travel all the way to Okinawa to find such beautiful seas in Shikoku.
Although it's in Kochi, it's on the southernmost island, requiring about a 3-hour drive from the city. The fatigue from the journey is worth it once you witness the breathtaking scenery. The sea's clarity is exceptional, with an average visibility of 20 meters and up to 40 meters, challenging Okinawa's reputation.
There's a plethora of activities to enjoy, from diving and snorkeling to camping. Mariko encourages everyone to visit and experience the beauty for themselves.
Information:
Location: Kashiwajima, Otsuki Town, Hata District, Kochi Prefecture
- A sea so clear it's too beautiful
Nearby spots for a day trip to the beach:
1. Tatsugahama Campsite - Offers parking and coin showers (day use until 15:30).
2. Kashiwajima Shirahama - Features a shallow sandy beach with parking at the orange information center and toilets at the bridge's base.
3. Kashiwajima Beach - Situated under Kashiwajima Bridge, it's a navigable area, so swimming is restricted to within the buoys.
Parking is available at your accommodation or the 'Kashiwajima Tourist Information Center'.

[Breathtaking view] Almost transparent blue! The beautiful Japanese sea known only to those in the know! Kashiwajima 🚢
When you think of a beautiful sea, you probably think of the sea in Europe or a resort area. In Japan, you probably think of the beautiful sea of Okinawa.
This beautiful sea is Kashiwajima in Kochi Prefecture.
It is so clear that you can see ships floating in the sky during the day.
I visited in the evening, so I couldn't see that, but
I still enjoyed the beautiful and spectacular view.
The sea is surprisingly beautiful.
It is also a sacred place for divers.
From Tokyo, it is not as easy to access as going abroad, but it is worth seeing.
The stars are beautiful at night, so it is recommended to stay overnight.

Roadside station in Otsuki Town, Kochi Prefecture
I took advantage of the long weekend in October to visit Kochi Prefecture.
I stopped off at Otsukicho Roadside Station before heading to Kashiwajima.
This place is close to the sea and sells sashimi at a very reasonable price.
They sell it in small portions, so I bought some and ate it in the car.
They also sell locally grown vegetables.

Japan Shikoku Road Trip: Shimanto Beef, Houseboat Eel Bento, Dolphins at Kashiwajima, Terraced Onsens, and Dogo Onsen.
Our journey through Shikoku has come to an end. We put in a lot of effort researching this trip since information on the region is relatively limited. From landing and immigration to bus transfers and the overall flow of the itinerary, we spent so much time debating the details—which airports to use, how to sequence the sights, and where to stay...

Cafe & Restaurant Kamitsubaki at the 500th Step of Kotohira-gu: A Chance to Feed Wild Birds 🐦
📍 Cafe & Restaurant Kamitsubaki
892-1, Kotohira, Nakatado District, Kagawa 766-0001
During our road trip through Kochi, the Shimanto River, Kashiwajima, Sukumo, and Dogo Onsen, we decided to save our energy and head straight to the only restaurant within Kotohira-gu (Konpira-san). It is located right at the 500th step of the shrine's famous stone staircase.
This restaurant has a fascinating history. In 2004, during the "Heisei Great Senguza" (a grand festival held only once every 33 years), the old, dilapidated tea house at the shrine entrance was reconstructed. Subsequently, the renowned Shiseido Parlour opened "Cafe & Restaurant Kamitsubaki" here in 2007.
We drove here directly from Dogo Onsen for lunch. If you're driving, set your GPS to "Cafe Restaurant Kamitsubaki Parking Entrance." There are staff members on-site to help direct traffic, but please pay attention to the signals—the road is quite narrow and does not allow cars to pass each other. If the parking lot is full, they won't let more cars in.
We ordered the Kotohira Bone-in Local Chicken Curry. The meat was stewed until it was incredibly tender, practically melting in our mouths. We also tried the Kamitsubaki Sanuki Wagyu Burger, which features 100% premium Kagawa Black Wagyu (raised on olives!). The bun, made from local "Sanuki no Yume" wheat and natural yeast, was wonderfully fragrant and paired perfectly with the beef.
For a drink, we couldn't resist the "Konpira Dog Ramune Soda." It is inspired by the legendary "Konpira Dogs" that made the pilgrimage to the shrine on behalf of their owners during the Edo period. The drink is designed to evoke the image of a dog running happily under a blue sky and lush greenery—it was both delicious and fun!
To top it all off, the cheerful voices of the staff caught our attention. They were handing out sunflower seeds to all the guests so we could feed the Varied Tits on the outdoor terrace. We had such a wonderful time; it is a truly rare and special experience to have at a cafe in Japan!

Don't miss out on these exquisite and affordable desserts and cakes in Sukumo! 🍰✨
📍 Pâtisserie SAIGO
Kozukushi-148-1 Kozukushicho, Sukumo, Kochi 788-0271
Since the rain ruined our plans for the ocean and a picnic at Kashiwajima, my husband took me to the top-rated fruit tart and chiffon cake shop in Sukumo. We picked up some cakes and treats to enjoy back at the hotel instead. 🍰
The shop has parking right out front, making it super easy to pop in. Every cake looks incredibly gourmet and high-end, yet the prices are surprisingly wallet-friendly! I picked out two cakes—including a seasonal peach tart—and a few other treats. The cream was unbelievably light and refreshing! 🍑🧁
If you're passing through the area, I highly recommend stopping by for some cakes and desserts to go! 🚗💨

Shimanto Sashimi Specialist | Incredible Value | Fresh & Delicious..
‼️ Pre-orders required for Nigiri Sushi and Seafood Donburi ‼️
This local institution brings in the freshest daily catch directly from the waters of Southwest Kochi (like Sukumo Bay and Shimizu Fishing Port) every single morning. We originally planned to take it for a picnic at Kashiwa Island, but the weather didn't cooperate, so we enjoyed it at a roadside rest area instead. The shop even provides chopsticks, wasabi, and soy sauce, making it perfect for road trippers.
It’s a tiny shop where locals are always dropping by to pick up their orders—takeout only, and reservations are usually done by phone. Since I couldn't call, I messaged the owner on IG mentioning I was from Taiwan. I'm so grateful for the owner's help, which allowed us to enjoy such fresh and delicious sashimi! ❤️
📝 The Nigiri set included Salmon, Sea Bream, Squid, Whelk, Shrimp, Squid Tentacles, Surf Clam, and Yellowtail. The sashimi featured Seared Sea Bream and Yellowtail. Everything pictured was just 2,200 yen! ✨

Discover the Crystal Clear Waters and Wild Dolphins of Kochi's Kashiwajima!
I finally made it to Kashiwajima in Otsuki Town, right at the western edge of Kochi Prefecture! 🚗💨
It’s a bit of a trek from Kochi City, so it’s not exactly a quick stop, but this breathtaking view is absolutely worth the journey. ✨
The best thing about Kashiwajima is, without a doubt, the incredibly clear water! 🏝️💙 Photos really don't do it justice; you have to see it in person to believe how stunning it is.
With plenty of people swimming in the summer, it's the ultimate destination for a sunny getaway. ☀️🌊
I even got lucky enough to spot some wild dolphins this time! 🐬 They didn't pop their heads out much, but seeing them in the wild instead of an aquarium was such an amazing experience.
Between the crystal clear sea and the chance to encounter wild dolphins, Kashiwajima is a must-visit. If you have some extra time during your trip to Kochi, I highly recommend making the trip!

The Emerald Green of Kashiwajima.
Feels like an exotic getaway!? A miraculous sea where boats seem to float in mid-air🚢✨
I took a trip to Kashiwajima, a scenic spot located in Otsuki Town at the southwesternmost tip of Kochi Prefecture!
Just look at this incredible water clarity...!🥺
The ocean is so transparent that the sunlight casts the boats' shadows directly onto the seabed, creating a magical illusion that they're hovering in the sky☁️✨
The breathtaking emerald waters, known as "Kashiwajima Blue," are so stunning you'll easily forget you're still in Japan (let alone Shikoku!). It's also famous as a mecca for diving and snorkeling, where you can encounter vibrant tropical fish and coral reefs🐠🪸
It was such a therapeutic experience just soaking in this breathtaking view.
If you're traveling to Kochi, this is an absolute must-visit, even if it takes a bit of extra travel time!
📍 Spot Info
Location: Kochi Prefecture / Japan
Access: About a 2.5 to 3-hour drive from downtown Kochi
Best Viewing Tips: The "floating boat" illusion is most visible on a clear, sunny day from late morning to early afternoon when the sun is high in the sky☀️
💡 Things to Know Before You Go
During the summer season, the parking lots fill up quickly, so we highly recommend getting there first thing in the morning🚗

Does the boat float in mid-air as it enters? The blue waters of Kashiwajima, the southernmost point of Kochi Prefecture.
#HiddenGemPhotoSpot
Located in Otsuki Town, at the southwestern tip of Kochi Prefecture, Kashiwajima Island is a scenic spot known for its emerald green sea with such high transparency that "boats appear to float in mid-air."
Its exceptional clarity and "Kashiwajima Blue" waters are located in the area where the Kuroshio Current and the Bungo Channel meet, and the sea, so clear you can see the bottom, has become a major topic of conversation on social media.
It is one of the world's leading diving spots, and it is said that about one-third of the fish species inhabiting Japan (over 1,000 species) gather there, making it extremely popular with divers and anglers.
For snorkeling and swimming, in swimming areas such as Kashiwajima Shirahama, you can observe coral and tropical fish up close even in the shallow waters.
A Kashiwajima cruise, where you can enjoy the unique rock formations along the coastline and the crystal-clear sea from the boat, is also popular, so I tried it.
This time, I camped in a tent at the Otsuki Ecology Campground. #OtsukiEcologyCampground #Kashiwajima

A Lucky Moment Encountering Dolphins
📍Kashiwajima|Shikoku's Hidden Treasure Bay
During the nine-day holiday driving tour around Shikoku, we passed by Kashiwajima. Although it wasn’t a perfectly sunny day, the bay before us was still breathtakingly beautiful.
The biggest surprise was—I've heard there’s a chance to see dolphins here, and unexpectedly, we actually encountered them. Perhaps the meaning of travel is this kind of unpredictable beauty!
💡Little tip: Even if the weather isn’t perfectly sunny, this sea is still worth seeing. Remember to bring your swimsuit and snorkeling gear—you might just have a romantic encounter with dolphins~

There were plenty of fish in the crystal clear water, and we enjoyed snorkeling! 🤿
Not only could we dive into the ocean, but we also enjoyed the ocean view from the observation deck. It was a truly wonderful place. ✨🫶
There weren't many shops nearby, and some were closed, so we had to search quite a bit for lunch. 🥲
We stayed at Sukumo Resort Yashinoyu.
The food was absolutely delicious! For the price, the food was so good, and it was so close to Kashiwajima... I'm so glad I stayed here! 😊

This is Japan🗾Long summer on the blue beach
Japan's most beautiful ocean, rich in fish species, in Kochi Prefecture! ️
I couldn't believe it! Kochi Prefecture. Such ignorance!
It's so beautiful, the water is so warm, I feel like I want to swim forever.
I swam so long that my back turned completely black, and I got a summer tattoo! It's a souvenir for the coming winter! ☃️
The dolphins in the first picture are a mother and child who live in the fishing port. What a nice place they live! ️
Due to poor access, there aren't many tourists (and I mean that as a compliment).
Rent a car from Kochi Airport and drive for three hours to get there!
The whole trip is on a one-lane highway, so even those with driving disabilities should find it an easy challenge.

A road trip to Shikoku 🚗✨ Even the detours were breathtaking
Even rivers that weren't our destination were so beautiful...!
This Shikoku drive was so amazing, I'd like to share a detailed introduction to the spots we stopped at. ✨
📍Nakatsu Valley Prefectural Natural Park
The ultimate "Niyodo Blue"!
The contrast between the crystal-clear river and the vibrant greenery took my breath away. 🌿
The walking trail was well-maintained along the valley, making it easy to walk. 🚶♀️
I discovered moss-covered rocks and small waterfalls, and felt refreshed bathing in negative ions. ✨
Uryu Falls was particularly impressive, with its sparkling spray that left me mesmerized.
📍Shikoku Karst
A sky-high road where you can have the spectacular view all to yourself!
Spreading out over 1,000 meters above sea level, I was blown away by the picture-book-like scenery. 🥺
The endless green carpet and rolling limestone were both mysterious and charming. 🪨
The clear air and endless blue sky were like a cleansing experience.
The silver grass swaying in the breeze was also beautiful, and just staring at it was a truly joyous experience.
📍Kashiwajima
The water was so clear it almost felt like I was floating on the ocean!
The sparkling emerald green water was so beautiful I couldn't help but exclaim, "It feels like I'm not in Japan!" 🐠
Colorful tropical fish were swimming around, and apparently you can enjoy snorkeling and diving!
I didn't have time this time, but next time I definitely want to experience the underwater world!!
The gradations of color at sunset were also amazing, and the scenery was so soothing that I was captivated by it all day long.
Even the detours were breathtaking in Shikoku 🚗💨
Here's a closer look at the stunning spots we visited!
📍 Nakatsu Valley Prefectural Natural Park
The "Niyodo Blue" is just as vibrant as they say! The crystal-clear river and lush greenery were a feast for the eyes.

It is far from the center of Kochi and a little inconvenient to access, but it is worth visiting🌊

[Kochi] 3 recommended spots in Otsuki Town
☑︎ Three recommended spots for touring Otsuki Town, Kochi!
① #KashiwajimaBeach
I introduced this in the previous reel, but
Kashiwajima is so clear that the water is insanely clear.
You can even meet dolphins and feel like you're in heaven lol
Park in the nearby parking lot and enjoy sightseeing♡
② #OdoMonkeyPark
A spot where you can feed wild monkeys.
You can get food for the 200 yen management fee, so
feed the monkeys!
They're not always there, but
they're only there in the fall and spring when there's less food.
⚠️The road is narrow, so I recommend parking at the Odo Observatory parking lot!
③ #OdoyamaObservatory
If you want to see Kashiwajima and Odo Coast, this is the place to go!
A lookout spot where you can enjoy a 360° panoramic view
A 5-minute hike from the parking lot 🥾
The view at the top is spectacular
If you're in the area, be sure to stop by ♡

Kochi Prefecture, Yamato, Ishibashi, Kochi Prefecture, also has Thai language service⬇️
Drive west from Kochi city for about 3 hours!
The highway ends halfway through, but it's worth the time.
There is bluefin tuna from Kashiwajima, and the water is incredibly clear.
There were even wild dolphins swimming around 🐬
There are many divers in the town,
and we stayed at the guesthouse Fureai Kaiyuri!
The first floor has a dining room and a bath, the second floor has a toilet, washbasin, refrigerator, and rooms,
and there are several rooms, and the four of us stayed in a single-floor room on the third floor, about 20 tatami mats in size.
This time we stayed with our family, and we were very satisfied with the meals for the kids and the meals full of seafood for the adults!
The bluefin tuna steak was so delicious that we bought some to take home!
We didn't have breakfast, but we swam a lot in the sea in the morning, and at night we went squid fishing with the locals.
We didn't catch any, but it was a great experience to be able to fillet the squid that the captain caught and eat it on the boat!
We'll go again next year! !
