Arai Te Uru Nature Reserve quickly became our favourite sunset spot around the Hokianga Harbour. Located between Opononi and Omapere, the reserve sits high above the coastline with incredible views stretching across the harbour entrance, rolling sand dunes, and the Tasman Sea beyond. As the afternoon light changes, the entire landscape seems to soften into gold. The reserve itself is easy to access and very well set up for visitors. There is a large public carpark, picnic areas, public toilets, and several walking tracks weaving through native vegetation and coastal viewpoints. The walking tracks are relatively easy and offer beautiful views back across the harbour and coastline, especially during the late afternoon when the light becomes softer. What we loved most though was simply sitting quietly and watching the sunset unfold. It felt peaceful, spacious, and very connected to the surrounding landscape. You’ll often find locals parked up here in the evenings as well which always says a lot about a place. If you’re staying anywhere around Opononi or Omapere, this is absolutely worth adding into your evening plans.
